Crash of 83
>>
>>1762970
The Famicom came out around the time of the video game crash in the US, and NoA felt that the console would need to look less like a game system in order to sell well.
>>
>>1762984
There's a point where they almost turned it into a real computer. The prototype even exists and all.

>>
>>1763768
He does it on purpose.
He legit changes a resister, which usually lowers the quality, and tries to encase everything in hot glue so nobody will be able to reverse engineer his custom mod. dude is a fucking schitzo.
>>
>>1763782
Is it weird that the only thing that's ever been weird to me is that he used two separate controllers.
>>
>>1763786
I suppose that's why he does these convoluted cable-fest too.

>>1763568
>>1763557

I bet he want's to make his mods look complicated and hard to understand so nobody would try to steal his precious business.
>>
>>1763803
With a couple google searches you can find some red flags so he's lost a lot of business.
Now he's into selling romhacks.
The romhacking community was very welcoming of him and his buy my mod mentality.
they weren't

>>

>>
>>1763869

>>
>>1763872
>someone paid for that

What a horrible world.
>>
>>1763873
He charges a fuck ton too, a guy paid like 700$ to have his famicon not work anymore.
>>
>>1763875
Does he at least offer refunds? Claiming to have modded something only to ruin it is kind of a big deal.
>>
>>1763902
nope, he also melted the fuck out of the case, i posted some pictures.
It's the one with 100lbs of hot glue holding the switch in
>>
>>1763906
Sounds like something you should sue for. $700 is a lot to just fuck someone out of because you couldn't follow through with a service you sold.
>>
>>1763912
He claimed it worked before he shipped it. He sent out a video showing him booting it up, although he didn't have a tv to test the rgb on.
He also has disclaimers saying he won't refund or even fix anything for free.
>>
>>1763912
I've never even heard of this guy, and I'm on /vr/ quite a bit...but.. my God the horror.
>>
>>1763932
So he didn't show a test of the the console working before shipping and it was dead on arrival?
He's legally responsible. This can't be real, he'd be sued for everything he's worth.

So it wasn't until after the customer demanded that he take responsibility for his faulty work/destruction that Drakkin added the disclaimer to the price guide?
That right there is something that would not hold up in a court of any kind, and Drakkin would be fully responsible for reimbursement. This goes double because he was unable to test the console before shipping it out TWICE because he lacked necessary equipment. There's no way he could confirm it was working before it left his "shop".

The customer should have followed through on this through the legal system. Probably would have gotten back half of what he put into it.

As for "Jason at Gametech", that url seems to be dead. However, it seems that he set up shop at game-tech.us instead. And he actually does have goo feedback.
>>
>>1764000
What did he do, cover it in clay and then paint it?
Even wall paint used on consoles isn't going to do that. Even if it were applied with a brush.

There's no way to fuck up a paintjob like that unless it's deliberate.

only to get worn out again, the top loader is superior, period, even with RF-only

you can EASILY mod it to output composite, or mod it to output composite, svid & RGB with a NESRGB

fuck drakon btw. holy shit these mods lol
>>
>>1764004
jason is awesome, you can see his work on his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/GameTechUS/videos

he's done mods & repairs on a few of my consoles. great communication, works fast and will do pretty much everything you ask him, to the letter. some of his custom work leaves a little to be desired aesthetically (he could do a better job of filing holes to make them cleaner) but functionally there are no problems.

I just would like to know, how the fuck are people like him still in business? How can people with that many bad references still be able to find someone willing to pay extraordinary huge amount of money for a work which looks like shit, sometimes works like shit and in general is shit. Nowadays literally every second guy who comes from electrotechnical high school knows how to solder few wires without destroying anything + many of them can also make it aesthetically pleasing. That RGB mod is not hard to do at all and even if it was you can still buy already modded console (or original one from Nintendo, I think French ones came with SCART) and it will still be cheaper that what he wants for that.

Speaking of Drakon, I managed to find a Game Action Replay on eBay on auction, which ended up going for an absurd amount of money in the end. I remember reading about the GAR years ago and thought "man this would be cool to own". It sorta worked, I could never figure out how the "save state" mechanism worked. It also turns out that the cartridge connector was shit, and one of the pins fell out after I pulled out my game.

So I decided to turn to him for help. I sent him the thing and he managed to work on it, however, he mentions he couldn't get it to work. I figured that it might've been the SRAM thing, which is stored by an EEPROM and will be erased should the battery die. He said he could do it, but he didn't have the exact EEPROMs at the time, and wanted me to buy him a set of 10 for $40. I said fuck that, I might as well have it sent to Leon, from Game Reproductions, to have the SRAM restored, since that's one of his services. I told him to mail it to Leon, but it turns out that the package never got to him, and it returned to Drakon. So he had it sent back to me so I could send it, and I'm left with a paperweight. I think it cost me $100 to have it "fixed", even though it doesn't work. God damn shame there is no one in the USA who can restore the SRAM, the only guy that does so is in Canada, and I don't feel like paying double digit shipping to have it sent back to me non-working anyway.

Well, I can only hope someone is selling another one of them on eBay again.

Okay, I can understand that the power was probably rerouted to the Genesis power button, and the thing probably plugs into the wall..

After a brief search, all I found was Drakon himself saying:
>Built in about 2 days. This's a fully consolized gameboy advance. I've built both a snes and arcade controller that work great with it.
So I guess it's a custom solution. And it's probably just as disfigured as this.. "Geneboy Advance," as he likes to call it.

You just know this thing has to be absolutely full of hot glue. Look at the ribbon cable he stuffed into the GBA too it looks like its covered with it as well.

I don't understand the point of sending a console out instead of modding it yourself, especially with the tutorials and resources online GameTechUS comes to mind. But even then, this shit is inexcusable. It makes me so fucking mad.

what's the deal with that random mobo?
>>
>>1769249
I haven't got around to tossing it. It fried when I pulled the built in WiFi card out because???

Must have been ESD. That finally made me buy a wrist strap.

Really pissed me off, had to drop $80 on an antique mobo to get my server back up, and it still doesn't have enough SATA ports.
>>
>>1769252
If it was new, you could have claimed it was fried upon arrival. There's no way for them to prove it wasn't, and most manufacturers have good warranties.
>>
>>1769254
it was old enough for him to not be able to get everything he needed in the replacement.
frying old mobos is the worst, that's why i'm on a shitty laptop currently. I can either settle for a dated one or upgrade everything.
>>
>>1769254
nah, it was an AMD M3A32, lasted like 6+ years, was doing fine too, I just thought I'd be a smart ass and pull out the wi-fi module which had been doing fine all this time just being disabled in the bios.

Sucks because it was a premium board. Replaced it with a midrange board with only 4 SATA ports, and two of them don't even work because the RAID controller is so fucked it can't handle anything.

I was stuck in a really shitty price point, where I couldn't upgrade without buying an entirely new system, but I was happy with all the components I had already. (6 gigs ram, Phenom 4 2.4, 6 sata ports)
>>
>>1769271
Extra fun: cooling clip on new motherboard snapped as soon as I applied pressure, had to retrieve clip from the badass ABIT board and use that.

When I fucked everything up I was cleaning the system out and upgrading it to PWM fans and moving it to a bigger case so I could slam all my hard drives in it. I took off the northbridge cooler because I wasn't doing anything crazy with it anymore, upgraded my gaming rig. Took more force than I was comfortable with.

So either removing the heatpipe cooler, or the wifi card.

I dunno anon, some people don't want to touch a soldering iron not even with a 2-meter stick.

As for me, I did my SNES and N64 rgb mod, but I never had to remove anything for those, I'm a little nervous about doing the NES one because I have to remove the PPU and I'm not very skillful with the solder iron, also the board it's pretty expensive so I don't want to mess around with my rookie hands, so I've been thinking on sending just this one.
