Do the writers themselves dislike Misty/Brock? Given how long they kept Brock in the anime I imagine the staff liked his character.

The anime does tend to change the ages of game characters so they could travel with Ash. If I recall correctly, Game!Mallow's around 18, and Game!Serena is in her mid to late teens. I'd imagine that this universe's Brock and Misty are older than there anime counterparts and closer to their game counterparts, so they won't feel as inclined to travel with Ash. If this new Ash does beat Brock fairly, that would make it less likely for him to join Ash. There's also the possibility of this movie taking place in the universe of the games.

Ash seems like he'll mostly be travelling solo aside from a few encounters with Makoto and Souji(sp?).

Dumb kids making shit up is not "rumors", and interviews with anime staff have confirmed the show was originally meant to air for roughly 80 episodes for ages. The Kanto arc, with the movie taking place shortly after the 8th gym, is what you were originally meant to get, and what ended up airing is relatively close to that. It's possible the end of the league was rewritten somewhat, but all the shit involving Mewtwo in the TV series, with it escaping from Team Rocket shortly after Ash beat the final gym, was always the plan. The movie even had to be rewritten slightly after the Porygon shit to make Mewtwo's backstory more clear since the hiatus meant those episodes would no longer have aired before the movie premiered.
