Here is all you need to know:
There are 4 pseudolegends you can catch before the E4 and there must be at least 20 families of Pokemon with BSTs of 540 or more.
You also get a second starter 2 thirds into the game.
I can only think of two complete shitmons in the game, the regional rodent and humpunny (and humpunny is somewhat useful for Wonder Trading). Even the regional bird and regional bugs are somewhat useful if they have the right Ability (both have one good ability and one bad ability).
Wonder Trade can give you some impressive mons.
Wonder Trade becomes faster the more gym badges you get.
You can Wonder Trade eggs and get level 1 pokemon.
Gyms use exactly the same types they use in Fire Red.

I used Wedgard in my most recent run and it functioned as a surrogate starter (I tend to ditch my starter now since I've used all 3). It had a slightly rough start but after it got good moves like Crush Claw it excelled in the mid to late game with good physical bulk, attack, and solid speed. Its movepool is also really cool, and with a Life Orb it destroys anything in its way. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I used Motherfuck on my first run of the game. It didn't have much offensive presence until the very late-game Earthquake TM: before that it only had Rock Tomb and Fly. Spore was exceptionally useful though, and you can screw over foes with Perish Trapping, which is just a joy to see. It's very far from a top tier pick in my opinion, but if you're looking for a unique team member, you might as well use Motherfuck.

And be happy you get boosted EXP from Wonder Trade. I had to go out and catch mine, which was a nightmare...

PSA: Vandash gets STAB Crunch at level 21 backed by a base 95 Attack and 95 Speed, as well as access to powerful moves like Leaf Blade and even Toke later in the game. Not to mention access to Guts. HMs are also halfway decent in this game. Don't discount an HM Slave as only an HM Slave, as Vandash has plenty of use outside of that role and instead as a fast physical attacker with fantastic early-midgame presence.
