One thing SM lacks is something for Misty fans to complain about:

- May was Misty's direct replacement, and AG was the first saga Misty wasn't in so they were butt-hurt

- Dawn was treated as a co-star and very close to Ash, May got a cameo, and Misty didn't appear in DP at all.

- Iris essentially had Misty's old role in the anime, even if they didn't mind her

- Serena/Amour of course was the biggest threat to Pokeshipping, became near canon at the end, and Serena kissed Ash while Misty didn't. Amourshipping made them go through mental trauma


With SM on the other hand, there's not much for them to complain about. Lana is a water pokemon trainer like Misty but they don't mind her, and Mallow/Lillie are likely just there for them. So other than Misty fans still bothered that she's gone from the anime in general, I can't think of anything specific about SM for them to be angry about.

Johto is decent up to the point where Charizard and Squirtle leave. After that is when the GS ball is abandoned and the tedious filler starts coming in full force. Unfortunately Ash's Johto pokemon are also not handled well because his starters don't evolve besides Bayleef and there's not much battles.

However late Johto is actually pretty entertaining, as it's when Tomioka starting taking over the series from Shudo. The Whirl Cup is decent and the last 30ish episodes of Johto have almost consistently good episodes.

I just couldn't stand the fact that she gets special ojou sama treatment while everyone gets their hands dirty doing the task they have been assigned.
