When it comes to theme decks, you shouldn't buy them IRL since they don't really have the staple cards you need to build a real deck. Battle Arena decks like Keldeo v Rayquaza have those. Even then singles are always the best deal.

You need to buy a theme deck in PTCGO because you need one store bought one to get your free trainer challenge packs. Incineroar, Decidueye, and Lunala are the three good ones.

PTCG is a generally simpler card game than others. The meta is more diverse due to weakness mechanic but your board is less flexible and the difference between most decks is fewer cards.

That helps to keep cost down though since you reuse a lot of staples. A league ready PTCG deck costs about $100-$150 or so these days depending on the deck, but once you have 2-3 Tapu Lele the cost of each successive deck is only like $20-40.

The deck is currently the best option to use in theme tournament events. Use your token to get event tickets, use your event tickets and optimal theme deck to get the most recent pack Guardian Rising, learn the online values of cards for packs, trade the packs for the deck you wish to build. Keep in mind of the upcoming format change where a HUGE number of viable decks, fun decks, and staple cards will be cycled out.

Also don't trust breakpoint won't be rotated as well. Pokebeach says we may see the next rotation set news this Saturday before the US nationals.

If you want to play good decks it will be extremely miserable and take a metric ton of time to get everything you need. Not only that you will have to deal with trading a bunch of misers nonstop. Trading on ptcgo is like pulling teeth with those people if you don't give them straight value over the price of what you want. Also why would I ever want to play IRL.

I attempted to make a budget lunala deck based ony on what I read about Lunala, as I dont own any of the cosmog family line online so take this list with a grain of salt.

Too lazy to open PTCGO so I made it in excel.

Main focus on getting more than one Lunala in play at any time, Oranguru helps you to draw and also can attack with 3 [C], perfect to target by the second Lunala attack
Oricorio ability only works by being played from hand, it helps you to get 2 psychic energy early but it get stuck on the bench so play them carefully.

Most of the trainers are dirt cheap, you must get your stadium in play to switch with ease.

Had a 15 win streak yesterday. The max versus points I was getting was 30 for each win. Get shit on gx-ex fags

I'm in the process of making a non-shitty updated image guide for deckbuilding in this game which would address a lot of the issues with this list.

1. Lunala isn't a very good card to build around, honestly. Both Lunala and Solgaleo GUR are pretty much intended to be included in their respective GX's decks. I mean it's not the worst card but there are way better budget lists you can make. Zoroark for example, I think you can buy a few copies of one of the theme decks for a playset of them without using any tradable packs. Garb isn't expensive anymore either and even if you decide to stick with Lunala a thin Garb line would be better than Oricorio. You shouldn't need more than 1 Oranguru. Get at least one Lunala-GX as well imo, the card is also very cheap (cause it kind of sucks).

2. Your supporter lineup lacks consistency, dump your Lillies/Kukuis and go 4 N 4 Sycamore. Without VS seekers heavy investment in draw support is even more important. Before VS seeker came back basically every deck was 3-4 N 4 Sycamore, and even now a lot of decks run that.

3. Evosoda sucks, use rare candies and ball cards. Town map is a noob trap crutch card not worth playing in most decks. Energy lotto is straight up inferior to professor's letter unless you have special energies in your deck. If you do put a Lunala-GX in, max potions are good with that card due to energy trans.

Local quality is highly variable in any TCG since once enough weirdos come the normal people get scared away. If you go to regionals, most of the weirdo presence is much lower key.

cards are still viable in Expanded forever. Don't go selling em yet. Or at least, Expanded has not yet rotated since they made it a thing. It's probably due. Maybe even this year we'll see an XY-on expanded? But that is pure hear-say. More likely, all those cards are still good, just no longer in Standard format.

Rotation happens at the start of September, though they announce which sets (along with the date), around now. This time last year they announced on NA nationals weekend, which is this weekend. Dunno who said mid-August, it's usually September 1st.

I don't have any urge to play expanded. So that doesn't bother me. Too many cards too many decks.

A guy on TCGO told me it rotates after worlds, which I looked up and saw as August 18th. I think what I will do is wait till I know 100% what will be rotated out and then just sell everything that I can't play in standard for GR packs.

I mean even if I sell everything that rotates out I still have several decks to play with depending how far they rotate out cards: Turbo Darkrai*, Golisopod/Lurantis, Greninja*, Lapras, Metagross, tapubulu/lurantis, Tapubulu/Vikavolt, and Volcanion.

Then again a lot of these decks revolve around Max Elixer which is going the way of the dodo so who knows. I still have the cards for other decks too like Koko and others. Guess I will just wait and see.

Luckily there are a lot of cards in the next set I wish to play that look fun. Especially that Golisopod.

Same anon here. Chances are, Max Elixir will stay in Standard format I reckon? But it's only guesswork. All the more reason for you to hold your horses for an announcement, especially since it's most likely to come this weekend.

The way I see it, Rotation twenty18 (like, a year from now) is SM-on for sure for sure. Like why would they cut it anywhere but at the start of that block? There are ten expansion between where we are now and where we will be then. Most easy is to say well then five now, and five then, but not all expansions are equal. Double Crisis was a mini set and Evolutions, (despite it's size) may as well have been.

So my money says they will rotate four sets this year and six next year rather than a straight five/five break. That would keep every set with the Break Mechanics in for this year, then all Breaks as well as EXs would leave the next year. I figure the big surprise this year will be an Expanded rotation.

I'm only guessing, but it makes sense from a design point of view. Best advice is to wait for the official announcement until you do anything. You might make a buck or two profit trying to jump the gun, but more likely you'll blow your profit trying to be clever :P

It's pretty good on it's own. I like the promo Celebi in since you're already fucking them with a million coin flips so have another. Revitiliser to just keep bringing them back out over and over. Oranguru since you empty your hand very often with all the evolving going on. This deck could probably do with another Field Blower to knock out more float stones. I have a different build where it pairs with Decidueye to hit better numbers, but it's not nearly as consistent.

I am just trading off all my stuff that will be rotating out right now. I still have several decks that are meta that don't really require much rotated stuff other than elixirs and such. I found my Drampa Zoro deck really boring anyway.

I collect FAs so I have a good amount of stuff I have been selling. I am already up to 100ish GR packs and I am only 60% done selling.

That being said do you guys think it would be more value optimal to keep these GR packs till the next set and trade off the packs for stuff I want or would it be better to just liquidize all my packs now and invest in FA LeLes and trade those off for new packs/stuff I want?

How good is /vp/ at deck building? Whenever a new set comes out I always try building something by myself but it feels like shit to play 90% of the time. Then I netdeck some regionals decklist and end up having way more fun than I do with my own decks.

You 75% of the time turn 2 drop a charged mega amph and just say deal with it or lose. I had like a 70% win rate with it.

Things might get hairier when they get Marshadow though since it has even more HP than Mew-EX and you can't fuck it over by blowing its night marchers off of the bench.

Being able to see the enemies hand would require that the hands are sent to both clients, which would be really stupid. The only reason I can think is if they want to cache them before they are played, but that's a really shitty benefit for allowing cheating.

No, but I think they should balance the metagame and give more freedom of choice.
The problem with EX cards was that generally you wouldn't want to run any evolution unless it was very damn good because otherwise there was no point doing so since you can just use a basic EX that not only is stronger than the average evolution, but also faster.

GX could have easily fixed this if they balanced them problably, making basic GX faster but weaker while stage 2 GX slower but worth using, hell if you did that correctly you could have easily gotten rid of Rare Candy since the reward for setting up your "boss" stage 2 would have been worth the trouble anyway.

Then we have normal cards, which to be fair right now are pretty decently represented, sure aside Garbodor and Zoroark there's no "boss" card that isn't a GX/EX/Mega but there's plenty of tech normal cards with interesting and useful effects so I don't complain about that.

A year ago I started the Gameboy games, got hooked. Ran out of story-based games, migrated to ptcgo after lurking a few of these threads.

It will once scoop up and ghetto AZ hit the format. The issue is inconsistency with Koko rushing in. His ability can be very awkward if you start with him T1 and have more in hand and no way to N them away. Also If they ko it due to it's low health rebuilding that energy can be painful unless you are running electrode of which you are opening yourself to a lot of other issues.

That being said, I am still almost 100% sure it will see more play with:

Oricorio is damage placement, not damage. It doesn't benefit from weakness.

12 marchers is the absolute maximum you can discard, you can't expect more than 120 (maybe 140 if they have their archeops and gallade in discard yet since I guarantee you all NM will switch to the Gallade/Archeops variant) damage from Oricorio and Marshadow has 150hp, so basically under no condition are you wiping a NM field with Oricorio anymore.

Karen will become more useful as a NM counter again, but as we've seen with Vespiquen it's far from foolproof either, it's not hard to get a discard pile filled back up these days.

Thought about doing this with an aqua patch for reliability, so you don't potentially miss in your 6 cards from Elixir, but 1 that would require splitting your energybase between water and fairy, and 2 I couldn't think of a way to get a water in your discard reliably by turn 2. So I guess we settle for roughly 85% odds.

Unless any of you can think of a basic pokemon that either discards a water energy from your hand or that does the Sensei's Divining Top thing of letting you swap a card from hand with the one on top your deck. Either of those and we can make this foolproof.

Rats deck, but it has Ariados. Fun deck with pleasing winrate, but later you will forget this deck for being a little dull, not as dull as Night March, though.
Alakazam-EX with Gengar or Golbat lines deck. Pretty good one.

Hypno/Snorlax. You can try it with GX Snorlax.

the metagame is as diverse as its been in a long time. Best thing might be to play the online client for a while to get a feel for the big decks and your own playstyle.
Two Tapu Lele will be expensive(not compared to other games though) but you're gonna need them no matter the deck, then wait for the rotation announcement before any other serious investment.

Online theme is a pretty good way to learn the very basics.
However, theme decks are kind of inefficient with how they're built, mainly missing a lot of staple trainers, which they replace with too many energy and basic pokemon.

That said, you end up with like, minimum 45 free packs just by completing all the Trainer Challenge stuffs. Daily challenges and Versus ladder will get you even more.

Once you've got a pretty good handle on things, either build your own deck from your free digital stuffs or build a deck from paper now that you can make a good quess on what it should contain so you're buying the exact cards you need.

As for is it a good time, honestly, the standard meta is pretty good right now.

Good news is, other than those Lele, most decks won't cost more than like $20 to build, because you can re-use so much and because they're so bloody cheap.

The only reason Lele is so costly is because it's very rare, and so good and versatile it belongs in pretty much every deck. It has Mewtwo/Lugia-EX's attack (which costs a mere [C][C]), and Jirachi-EX's ability, AND its own GX that full recovers 2 benched mon.
It's the mother of pushed cards. Though still nothing compared to ROS Shaymin.

That said, there are a few decks that play without it. Which, are as a result, dirt cheap, because Lele is the only component of any real cost.
