Seriously though, diamond gain slows down massively towards the lategame (once you've exhausted all of your achievement diamonds/league diamonds/species diamonds etc). For this reason, it is important to make the most of your earlygame diamonds. Of course, none of this matters if you're a cashfag, but Popplio isn't generally worth it because it costs too much and offers too little compared to other options.

It's all about playing actively and what strats you use, Charizard to slowpoke is really good if you can get the mountain of coins, and upgrading all berries but upping the lowest one seems to be working

As someone who got Charizard first and thinks popplio is a meme, this is actually kinda correct. Popplio should be your end game. You'll beat the game before popplio pays for itself, and due to having random events that give diamonds, even without being able to grind diamonds from EL3 if you've updated. Once you finish, THEN buy popplio, as you won't need any of the boosts you would be buying earlier like Aegislash as badly, and the wait times for it to be useful are fine when you don't have a reason to hurry. It'll pay back by the time the next update comes, at which point you'll have an extra source of diamonds that didn't set you back.

It depends on your activity level. Optimally, you want to focus on food. Unlock a new berry whenever possible, and upgrade them in chunks of 25 since you get rewards for 25 ranks.
You can go straight for Charizard or Litten or Shaymin statue depending on how you want to play, the others aren't necessarily bad but are good choices early on. Popplio is the worst, get it last or not at all.

At some point the first 2 berry cost A FUCKING LOT to upgrade. Higher ranked berries cost less to reach that JP. But you don't have the coins to do everything. Focus on as little as possible.

The game works that way. Before 1.0.3 you can farm the last league for diamonds and candies (the last reward of the league). After 1.0.3, the reward became coins only (so you traded 25 diamonds+1 candy for 200 coins by updating)

How do you play? If you're constantly looking at your cell phone (once every 30min, for instance), berries are your go to method of leveling up, also, consider using the 2-berry method.

If you only look on lunch breaks or something (once every 6 hours or more), training is your method, but in this case I would recommend buying every training when available and only levelling to get the support candy on upgrade 25.

If you're a mixed player like me, consider doing a mixture of the above, not buying everything but levelling everything you have as much as you can (always level the upgrade that costs less, no matter which one).

But, finally, the best way to enjoy this game is to do whatever you feel like doing since min-maxing this game will make it less enjoyable and faster to beat.

I am in the same situation as you, I binge played the first weekend and then started looking for information on the game and noticed I made many mistakes. Since I am not resetting, I adjusted my strategies:

I bought everything under 1k pricing while upgrading them to rank 25 to get candies. When the new berries and training methods got to 1k+ I started reupgrading the old ones to make them all "feel the same" - I started putting them all to the same JP gain (now my goal is to make every berry give me 1k and every training 10k).

I haven't bought the last 4 berries nor the last 4 trainings, for that matter and so far I don't feel the need for them

Get training decent, but after a good while, you just only need to pump into the best three and hope the RNG averages you some good balance. The worst training still sucks after you pump so much resources into it. Berries are better to have closer in gaps, but training is a different story. You get training so infrequently, and it's too random. You can be screwed with 3 slam bags and not get the pokeball smash. Berries have a better RNG about them that they appear often enough and the good berries comes. Keep most trainings to level 25, if you can push the first 3 to 50, then that's good enough. Not worth it after that. From that point on, strongly berries. Alternate between Power Generator, Forretress Push, and Pokeball Smash when berries become too expensive.
