The SM anime feels like a kiddy cartoon. Like it makes the pokemon anime feel even more juvenile than it already is. If the show was like this since the first season I probably would have never gotten into it.

Never before in my life have I had this much desire to smuggle an uzi on to an airplane and massacre a Japanese office. Too bad it's not worth it because most of those executives are probably in other jobs by now.

Now XY, on the other hand, will likely get one eventually. From the look of things, fansub maintenance is a more tedious experience. If I had to guess, it's because there's nothing really new under the table for the sub team to long for. SM may be boring garbage, but at least it's something new people haven't seen before.
Apply that theory to their overall release pattern, and suddenly it starts making sense why previous series don't get as much releases as the new shit.

That and the designated translators for previous series have probably gone off the grid for a long while now, leaving Adamant on his own.

Johto really is an underrated arc. It at least had the best gym leaders and Brock was still fun.

Some of the fillers were really good too. Like the one with the guy who talked to Pokémon, or the one where Wobbuffet ended up getting dragged around by some criminal in a crazy police chase. The Wobbuffet one remains my all-time favorite episode of the entire series.

It was also nice to see some of the Kanto COTDs like the Ninja Girl, the Ditto Girl and the girl Brock got Vulpix from. Johto had its good points, but there weren't enough to sustain a 3 year run-time without the GS Ball arc, which was supposedly around 40-50 episodes worth.

The GS Ball situation was like writing a book trilogy where the entire second book is vetoed by the publisher 2 weeks before it goes to print, or something like that, and you somehow have to salvage it. Johto's shitness is somewhat excused when you realise that was a thing. The blame there lies fully with the marketing team.

Same with the Kalos League, they wrote it with Orange Shuriken and Ash defeating Alan, but were told they had to change it at the last second, leaving us with the ending we got. Not hard to see why Shudo left when you learn that that's the kind of shit the writers have to deal with.

As far as Ash's development goes, in the Orange League we can start seeing a little maturity in his attitudes, although occasionally he continued adopting conceited behaviors (this is until the “Battle Advanced” series).

Then in the Johto saga, in his favor there’s the fact that he actually matured as a trainer: In fact, it is from this point in time that his talent as a strategist comes out, proving to be very able to get out of critical situations using his now famous sudden strategies which in most cases were based on the exploitation of the battle field.

During the Johto League, Misty and Brock continued to sit on the sideline, but they stopped giving advices to Ash, since he proved to no longer need them.

Regarding his character, he also started to consolidate its sweetness, visible especially in respect to his pokemon, which he lovingly cuddled and comforted especially if sad or frightened. He won his Chikorita’s love (now Bayleef) that in many cases was also assuming attitudes of jealousy towards Ash.

As for his training methods, Ash says that he and his Pokemon are like a big family and this affects his training method, based primarily on trust and on encouragement of his Pokémon, in order to develop their strong points.

Many trainers tend to think that in order to strengthen a Pokémon it is necessary to work on his weaknesses, but Ash realized that the best thing is to use the strengths of a Pokémon to cover its weaknesses.

To cite an example: when his Turtwig has evolved into Grotle has not been able to move as fast as before, so Ash helped the Pokemon to change his fighting style, working on the resistance, so that Grotle could have been able to take lumps, rather than dodge them, and then attack at the right time.

Although Ash instills much confidence and positivity to his Pokémon (to the point of being willing to make as target of their moves in order to help them), in training he often becomes severe and intransigent: he doesn’t claim that his Pokémon tire too much or sacrifice themselves in any way, but he demands commitment and will, saying they should never give up and that evolution can never replace a bit of healthy work.

Regarding evolutions, Ash has always been very understanding with his Pokémon: he doesn’t force a Pokémon to evolve, especially if against his will, because he claims that a Pokémon can become very powerful without evolving if trained with patience and love (which is possible in the animated series, being different from the game).

One of the greatest of Ash’s skill is to know how to devise tactics based on the battles of others, and then customize and strengthen them in his own way. A clear example of this is the Counter Shield, Ash’s most important technique, to which he has arrived after having upgraded with time two techniques developed by Dawn: the Spinning and the Ice Aqua Jet.

The fact that XY made the list too is obvious because it was the most recent series and was popular enough to be included. Had this list been made prior to the start of XY, you would have likely seen DP there instead.
