The entire special was kinda like that. Focus on touching scenes, cute scenes, friendship and bonding, cool battles, emotional scenes... but one thing they NEVER brought up was comedic scenes. All the major moments they showed and talked up were either emotional or action-filled. SM's "slapstick lmao" tone and everything related to it was completely absent.

So the girls in the middle like May, Dawn and Iris are generally ignored/forgotten despite how popular the first two were for years. But Melemele still has a good amount of relevant areas that could be the focus of an episode. We haven't even seen Ten Carat Hill, that route with the berry fields, or Kala'e Bay yet. Compared to it Poni is just a barren wasteland.

Melemele is also the tutorial island that introduces people to the region, its culture and people etc., in both the games and the anime, so if they want the beginning of the season to keep the "comfy and laid back" feeling, there's no need to rush through it.

The 10th anniversary literally happened in early 2007, when DP had just recently started and AG had just ended. Back then Dawn was only around for about 6 months or so.

It's weird to think of how different the fandom was 10 years ago. Back then May had just left and people still weren't quite used to the idea of a new female lead every series, you still had the obsessed Misty fans thinking she would come back tot he show, Brock was still around with people wondering if he would ever leave, etc.

Now here we are a decade later and we can all see how the events happened.

Right now Serena is in a tier or two above the rest of all the previous female companions given how her character was handled vastly better then previous girls.

Right now the only contender to surpass Serena is Lillie depending on how her character is handled, and it looks to be like it'll be handled just as well as Serena's.

SM will take us to the 23rdish anniversary, then Gen 8 will take us to the 26/27th. Gen 9 should be ending around the time the 30th anniversary happens so we have a potential 3ish heroines who could ultimately top Serena if they have a fantastic character arc.

I feel like the only way we're going to have a character top Serena is if, like her, they choose to do something vastly different with her.

Have a new girl challenge gyms along with Ash, have a region where all battles are tag battles forcing Ash to permenantly pair up with a female companion and take on the gyms/league together. something new and unique. We got that with Lillie and Nebby, but the anime decided not to go that route.

But who knows.

It's going to take a fantastic girl to surpass the legendary heroine within the next 10 years.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Pokeshippers/Misty fans did not win. They just lost completely. Misty's departure being permanent since 2002 really is nothing short of a miracle, we could have theoretically been stuck with her a long time like we were with Brock.
