Topic Of The Thread: While it is obvious Pokemon play certain roles, whether in battle or society, what if a Pokemon had to play a completely unfamiliar role for whatever reason, like a Garchomp for fighting is now working with Nurse Joy as an assistant?

TOTT: I guess such a thing could happen, but I can't imagine it happening too commonly, because some Pokemon are just naturally better at different tasks. That's why it's always Chansey, Blissey, Audino, Comfey, and the like working with nurses. Only in extreme circumstances would people let a Pokemon take a job it's inherently unsuited for.
It would be a good idea for a story, though, to imagine how the Pokemon would handle it.

And speaking of nurses and Garchomps, isn't "Garchomp acts as assistant for Nurse Joy" a prompt in the ideabin? I know I've seen it before.

And on an unrelated note, it doesn't seem like anyone's doing the recap, so I'll take care of it. Just give me a few minutes.

Ee4ee returns after a long absence, bearing gifts--namely, a fic about Pokemon flying spaceships
http://archiveofourown.org/works/9908852

There's also this from cyanspark; it's not a story, but rather a collection of ideas for Pokemon type-related insults. Even though it isn't a story, I figure I might as well add it for the sake of completion.

A curse, surely. It's shit.

>It's shit.
• You were writing because you hadn't written in a while, not because you had a story telling itself through you.
• You deliberately avoided telling what story you did have in mind to refuse it its natural word count.
• You chose an epic theme and capitalized only a few percent of its promise.

Act 1 was fine. When Act 2 started to sputter, it was time to go to bed early and ask your muse for a clearer vision that could fit your chosen constraints.

As I mentioned in the previous thread, the conclusion to my series is coming along well.

>Recently posted chapter 19:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10121590/19/Gift-of-the-Protector-Radiant-Heart

Plan to write two more chapters and then an epilogue. Progress on my next Pokemon fiction is also working out well, I've gotten helpful feedback. Ideally at the end of Protector, I'll move on to publishing the next story.

>Topic Of The Thread: While it is obvious Pokemon play certain roles, whether in battle or society, what if a Pokemon had to play a completely unfamiliar role for whatever reason, like a Garchomp for fighting is now working with Nurse Joy as an assistant?

I like this concept and it is a running trope in my fics. I'll pair up Pokemon with personalities that don't fall squarely in line with their appearance/dex entry. As for actual roles in a cohesive battle team, that is more difficult to write because of the way typing and environment are related. (Example: even if a pure ground type loves the idea of being acrobatic in the air and hopes to become a pilot, its elemental strength from nature derives from the earth itself. This makes for some interesting concepts when personality is imparted onto the Pokemon, because then they may unambiguously inform the reader of their likes, dislikes, quirks, etc.)

>>31929431
Do you have a spare USB flash drive? You can put Linux on that and boot your computer to it instead of the hard drive, all you do is download a program, it doesn't mess with your friends computer.

It's also a good way to test the rest of the equipment. Unplug the HDD and if it still has trouble, it's going to be something else.

Instead of 7, which will lose support Soon™ (it already is), I'd say try Windows 8.1 which has all the goods of 7 in less memory and only 60% of the bad of Windows 10.

How's everyone feel about mons annunciating their names during dialogue? I think it works in the anime but it comes off as a bit stilted in writing. The alternative would just be descriptions of the Pokemon's reactions/motivations.
>>
>>31935576
(A classic question.)
Name-talk is crap, and if it matters to your piece, then you probably have a problem in defining your pokemon's intellect. This is because that's the same problem that afflicts canon, especially the animation.

If you have enough name-talk that it shifts from tolerable to distracting, then your pokemon are too vocal and too intelligent to be name-talking. That's okay, it's your AU, but it's an issue to tackle. When I started writing for pokemon, I knew I would be writing for Smart pokemon but I didn't want it to be people-in-cosumes (which is where that will quickly go if you don't watch out) so I laid out a spectrum of intellect from the lowest in canon (nearly non-verbal, instinctive behavior except for what's been trained should that apply) to the highest in canon (legendary telepaths are on-par if not beyond human intellect) and spread it across a number of lifestyle facets; a pokemon being trained, domestic versus battler, of a popular or communicative species, and having inherited or had applied a version of a Technical Machine that enables speech† each "levels up" a pokemon's intellect in my portrayals.

† This could be implemented through special speech training, babelfish insertion, sign language (which is another step on my scale), etc.; what matters is if there is a way to pierce the language barrier.

>descriptions of the Pokemon's reactions/motivations.
Reactions are fine, but if you start writing out motivations, that character needs to be the POV of the shot, or else your narration will feel sloppy and tell-ish; and if you're telling motivations that can be discerned from the actions…

Pokemon, as presented in canon, are secondary characters behind the token Hero, however much a cipher Ash/Player truly is. Shifting attention to the pokemon, because they make Pokemon interesting, pushes them into the spotlight, and there they can't carry a scene like a human may using grunts, whistles, and occasional pikapiing.

>Annunciating their names
You mean like Bulba bulba, Bulbasaur?

>vs. Descriptions of reactions / motivations
What would be the difference exactly? You mean like, Pokémon speak vs body language?
>>
>>31935576
Comes off as weird in writing, at least by itself anyway. As creatures they can most likely do other things, like screech, hum, giggle, the works. Or use body language

If they have to say their name, they should also be able to stretch sylablles and distort it to fit their tone.
I.e: bulba, buuuuuu, blah, sa, etc
>>
>>31935576
Anime-style Pokémon speech is worthless filler. It's packing peanuts in dialogue form. It's not content as it does not provide any information whatsoever. It's at best equivalent to writing out onomatopoeia instead of describing an action or event, and that's something you should do almost never.
>>
>>31935775
This is something I've never considered doing for whatever reason, but seems very useful/interesting. I think >our attachment to various mons can definitely cause us to imbue them with a littke too much plot-intelligence, but that seems like a practical way to circumvent that.
>>
>>31936164
I think that the key lies in paying attention not so much to the intelligence but how the character would wield it.

This is actually easier in Pokemon than, for example, general sci-fi/fantasy with monsters, because pokemon by-definition are self-suppressing. The ecosystem would quickly become a wasteland if every pokemon used its abilities to their fullest. Pokemon simply DON'T, so that's a critical part of their depiction and must be retained and respected: Pokemon only go as far as they are pushed or invited. That explains training, evolution, how they do and don't use their powers, and why empowering a pokemon reduces its willfulness and malicious ambitions. (But we also must be careful not to make a generic excuse out of it to get away with a pokemon being spontaneously weak or stupid at a moment convenient for the intended plot.)
>>
>>31935176
Probably the halfway point but anything can happen. I thought this work would be ten chapters long initially. Then forty. Who knows now. 15, 20? We'll see. It's done a great job of giving me new threads to spin into stories after I'm done with it too, including a direct sequel.

In two words: fairly invigorated.
>>
>>31935176
I'm still thinking about how things might come together for my next story for this thread. I'm forcing myself to disconnect what I want to impose on the story from what 'should happen' and making myself justify these inclusions if they do come to pass.

Been working on an original project too, doing a much-needed scope and progression overhaul to bring it back in line with its new medium from what it used to be. I've gone back to basics on that.

Two words? "Many possibilities." Since I mentioned two works I'm going to add two more, just as applicable to both; "Unclear, improving."

Then again I've also felt a weird little urge to narrate VGC2014 Finals from the pokemon's perspectives, but I'm probably going to pass over that or save it for a rainy day project.

>>31935576
I used it in the original versions of BSTF Ch.2&3. When I rewrote and merged them, the best thing I did was remove the name-speak. It's pointless at best, uncharacteristic and distracting at worst.
>>
>>31935176
Well, I technically don't have a current work in the sense that I've been actively posting in the thread about it, but I have been writing something regardless, so I'll talk about that.
Specifically, there's a certain story I started a while ago but gave up on halfway through, and I've been trying to finish it and resume posting it here. But I've kept quiet about it and never mentioned it before in the writethread, because only now am I getting to a point where I know I'll successfully finish it. So you heard it here first, folks, for what it's worth.
To answer how far along I am: I've written everything in at least a rough draft form, and I'm in the process of finalizing everything now. As such, to use two words, I guess I'd say "almost done".

>>31935576
To be brutally honest, I hate it. It's annoying to read, and it sounds stupid and obnoxious in the anime.
In writing, I always avoid it and just use whatever noises I find fitting for the species. A Combee buzzes, an Ariados hisses, a Weavile makes cat noises, etc.

>>
>>31936578
I often inadvertently start drawing inspiration from other things while writing a story and it starts to contort the narrative. This can ususlly be mendes by starting with an outline, which I something I highly recommend.
>>
>>31937352
BSTF and WIAM together showed me I don't work well with all but the vaguest outlines. The former had a rather strict one to start, and it put me in a very rough position around the halfway point. The latter had only a general idea as to the events and pacing and came out better for it. Because of this I'm trying to limit my pre-planning to just a vague progression. This doesn't absolve me from actually figuring out what the progression is; it's important to realize how a story may go from its beginning to its end.

Just read WIAM and BSTF last night, pretty good stuff. I felt kind of confused after BSTF, though, and I was wondering if you'd clear something up for me: What was Steven's deal? Why did he think Michael, how had retired and seemed to have very little contact with him, was ruining his life? Was he just a lunatic, plain and simple? I read that bit at the end of Chapter 8 a couple times, but I'm still confused.
>>
>>31939459First of all, just want to say thank you for reading my stuff!

The theme running through BSTF I tried to adhere to was "Dealing with misfortune poorly." Steven was supposed to be the 'off the deep end' of that scale.

Michael's inventions replaced his job at the pokemon center. Then he worked for Michael and (this is the part that's not mentioned in the story, I don't think, but is sorta implied during the vidcall) got shuffled off when Michael sold his company. He's staring down the barrel of Michael costing him a third job in a row, from his perspective, and decides to be, er, proactive about it.

His bit at the end of Ch.8 was more or less exclusively to show he's not really in a good frame of mind and associated with bad actors. It's actually pretty cliche in that regard, really. One of my reviewers called it 'boilerplate, but good boilerplate'.

Hey, while I have you here, if those two are to get followups, what would you be looking for in them?
>>
>>31935320
cge why do you give a fuck that people were sad about EV's ending? Did you not realize people would miss a character they liked? I highly doubt anyone came up to you and said that they don't like you anymore because you made a story about a dead man walking. Stop being a bitch about people's opinions and write what you like.
>>
>>31939547
Ah, I see, nice. Thanks for clearing that up.

So, for your question. Going with the theme of meetings and bonding between pokemon and people, and all of the characters being adult so far, perhaps your next installment could be of a child (8-10) running away from home, and meeting a much older pokemon that feels obligated to take care of it after saving its life (shiftry in Petalburg Woods, abomasnow on the outskirts of Lake Acuity, an illusioned zoroark, etc.) or some similar event. You could either have the child remain there for sometime, and do snapshots of the child's life with the grumpy old pokemon, or perhaps make it a more detailed several week stay, which ends with the child realizing that he must return home, but vowing to come back and find his menotr eventually.

Or in a bit of a role-reversal, perhaps an exploring trainer accidentally kills a mother pokemon. She finds an egg after the incident - in this situation, I'm imagining a mother braviary with a little rufflet on the way - and feels obligated to raise the child he has deprived of a mother (and perhaps of a life, had she left it there), and then perhaps of what follows, with his heavy conscience.

Not really sure if that's the sort of stuff you're looking for, but that's what comes to mind. Also, at some point down the road, I'd like to see a resolution of the blaziken explorer/human girl situation, even if only alluded to by another character. It reminds me of a large story I had planned out once that involved exploration teams accidentally coming to the human world, and I'm curious of where you could take the concept.

This is what I meant, actually! If/when sequels rolled around for those two stories, what would you hope to see in them?

You can add it to the catalog yourself, if you want.

Reminds me that, once again, I need to update my listings in there...

Oh! I thought you were talking about the "Confluence" series as a whole, my bad.

I thought BSTF wrapped up pretty well, honestly. It was kind of open-ended, but not enough that it invited further questions. Maybe some backstory on Alata, and her flock? If you were to do a sequel, maybe a latios from her flock would find her (a brother, or something), saying that "we've been searching for you all this time!" or something to that effect. Again, I'm happy with it, don't think it necessarily needs a sequel.

WIAM, on the other hand has tons of sequel potential. You've got room for writing about Sierra's time in the military and how she met her flygon, but I'm most interested in the unanswered questions about our blaziken: is the explorer world a different world altogether, or just an exceptionally well-hidden civilization? How will the explorers react when she finds her boy once more? Will the two meet through Sierra going to find blaziken or blaziken going to find Sierra? Also, how the fuck did that scyther beat him? It's a bug-type and he's a goddamn blaziken, would be nice to see what the deal is there, including their motivation for fighting to begin with. So, yeah, that's what I'd like to see, I guess. Revealing world-building, development of their relationship, and also - though I didn't mention it above - more explorers (the other members of his team, primarily).
>>
>>31940078
>I thought BSTF wrapped up pretty well, honestly.
Alright, that lines up well with most other feedback I received. If I write more about them, it'll happen because I could factor their relationship into a greater story about various takes on human and pokemon bonds (which should satisfy the one call I did get to see more of them). There won't be a BSTF2, but this might not be the last we've seen with them.

>WIAM, on the other hand has tons of sequel potential.
WIAM is definitely going somewhere still. It might even get two follow-ups, depending on what I want to do for the one I'm currently planning. I have a hankering to play with a "PMD team in the 'normal' world" concept, but I'll need an actual story to explore it through.

(Second look at the 'human and pokemon bonds' theme mentioned above? Who knows, stay tuned!)

Scyther hurt him as bad as it did because it was playing for keeps when Blaziken wasn't, and got him while he was initially distracted. Hostiles outside MDs? Surely they can be talked down...

>cge why do you give a fuck that people were sad about EV's ending?
"Discouraged" is the operative word, so operative that few reached said ending. One of my readers quit E/V early and another refuses to try it on knowledge of that. I intended the piece to be about how much choice and influence one has when choosing possible fates, struggling against destiny, and weighing what one wants versus what is best, or at least gives preferable odds after taking into account what one thinks they know about the people for whom they care.

But I failed miserably to communicate that forest for this forest of trees. Instead, I just made readers long for more fluff about feeding deer fast food and flirtatious philosophical conversations across a two-decades age difference.

>Did you not realize people would miss a character they liked?
I began to miss the most courageous character in Can't Escape as soon as I wrote that character's final moment; I'm nigh heartless and often inconsiderate but (unfortunately) not emotionless. My miscalculation was that I think in terms of stories, but apparently at least a proportion of my readers think in terms of characters.

>Stop being a bitch about people's opinions and write what you like.
I can write endlessly, but what of my writing should be publicized is a different matter. I release because I hope that others will enjoy sharing my visions. If some of my writings shall do harm instead of help, then they, like myself, should remain distant and reclusive.

>Worse still is that the early chapters are complete ASS due to me having been a new writer, and I can't stomach the thought of leaving them as is.

I'd heavily recommend against reprocessing the already published chapters - in particular if it is big changes - until you can do something like close your current arc and take a break for development. Closing shop for maintenance amidst your exposition will annoy in particular your loyal customers -and will break your workflow implying you have any currently.

A question that came to mind after the subject was brought up in the iirc last night, wondering if any of you authors ever had this same issue. When making a new story an important part of capturing the potential reader (in addition to an inviting summary) is the image you use for your fic. Since I have essentially zero visual artistic skill, are there any drawfriend resources that are /vpwt/ approved?

Yep. Cge gets it. It's a struggle because I know I can write a descriptive scene and adequately represent the features of my characters through narrative text or dialogue, but translating it all into an image that will become the first impression is very challenging.

>>
>>31944404
noprob.

re: visual resources. I have never used an image for a fic; Unown has tho so he can speak of how relevant it is to capture the audience. And honestly I'm not sure about any drawfriend-like resources, let alone /vpwt/ approved, sorry.

But it sounds tempting; if I had to go the way of getting an image, banner or poster for my fic, I'm guessing I'd probably commission one to any of a number of artists I've heard of.
>>
>>31945138
>>31945107

Commissions are probably your best bet outside of hoping for charity in a drawthread or pinning your hopes on a prayer. My best friend's a drawfag and he's how I'll be getting some art of the three main 'mon in ACPC. Hell, he's how I got the current default image I use for most of work, but that was a doodle from a stream.

The question of disposable income to spend on something like that becomes key though, and it may not be feasible to spend money on art for your work.
>>
>>31945107
>Cge gets it.
:D

>translating it all into an image that will become the first impression is very challenging
>translating it all
We've found the problem.
Your promotional image should be about the spirit of the work, not capturing its content.
• Simple films have simple posters. Consider Alien or Jaws or Jurassic Park—monster movie, there's the monster.
• Epic heroic stories do well with collage. Indiana Jones and Star Wars clearly identify the hero(es) and surrounds them with expressive portraits of the cast.
• Thoughtful films prefer symbolic art that references the film; The Silence Of The Lambs by title is a reference to a line in the film, as is the deaths-head moth, the face is selectively unclear and de-colored (the nightvision scenes), the placement of the moth over the mouth ("Silence") touches the title, and the skull-like image is from Dali's Voluptas Mors, embedding the theme of deadly sexuality that founds the film. Or they just thought it looked cool. Over-analysis is the most amusing of errors.
• Farce shows its sense of humor through parody of the aforementioned. Consider National Lampoon's Vacation, which sent up the fantasy novel warrior cliche. (A year before, well publicised by Conan The Barbarian, but it was used in another form for Star Wars and countless prior productions.) Army Of Darkness mocked the same theme but with different elements.

Do you guys think there is a potential for a Fanfiction surrounding that mohn island?
>>
>>31947052
Yes. Write it.
>>
>>31947052
Everything has potential for a story, really. With Poke Pelago, there's definitely opportunity for a fanfic, especially due to the gaping plot hole relating to Mohn. You know, the fact that he's Lusamine's husband and his abrupt disappearance during an Ultra Wormhole experiment is what led her to get obsessed with UBs (and thus led to the whole plot of the game)... and yet he's happily living on Poke Pelago, where he doesn't mention his family at all, and you inexplicably are not able to tell anyone about him after you meet him.

Personally, I've been thinking it would be funny to make a PMD-style story with a bunch of Pokemon exploring a mystery dungeon and finding treasure, but by the end it's revealed that the "dungeon" is just Isle Aphun and the Pokemon are ordinary Pokemon caught by a trainer and sent to Poke Pelago, as opposed to explorers in the PMD world.
...Of course, now that I've said that, such a story wouldn't have as much impact because I just explained the whole plot twist.

Every trainer fic ever has the protagonist get an Eevee as a starter. A Riolu/Ralts/Zorua is usually rescued from mean, abusive rapists that the protagonist finds within 5 minutes of receiving the Eevee and leaving the starting area. That repeats a few times with different species of popular pokemon while the protagonist runs around the region grandstanding about friendship and winning every single battle without any effort before the writer gives up because they "ran out of ideas".

You're describing anybody playing a Pokemon game with an Action Replay handy. So that's what the story would be like: A meta fic about being a Pokemon player. Which we've had, usually on the motif of the experience of a game Pokemon's data structure were it additionally conscious. Typically they either follow the path of being traded through gens (different new trainer, similar/same name, familiar style) or facing the inevitable B↑Select, battery failure, or data corruption.

I guess you could do a Groundhog Day except from the perspective of a starter who vaguely remembers briefly being occasionally female and of various status/natures until being shiny happens.

On an unrelated note, the earlier talk of common Mary Sue Pokemon species got me thinking. Considering the pitfalls that many writers seem to fall into with these species (based on what I'm hearing here; I actually haven't read much Pokemon fanfiction, so I haven't had a chance to see this stuff for myself), I'm curious how people here feel about the inclusion of such species in stories, in general.

Is it a good idea to avoid including popular species like Lucario/Eevee/Pikachu/etc. altogether in a story? Would including them worsen the story automatically, or make people less inclined to read it, due to being unoriginal?
Or is it best to just forget all that and do whatever you want with your writing, using whatever species you desire?
>>
>>31962638
>Or is it best to just forget all that and do whatever you want with your writing, using whatever species you desire?

Yes, this. It's not worth it to sweat the small shit. Know what you're walking into and try to avoid the usual pitfalls and just push out what you want. If what you want to produce is unoriginal then go for the next best thing and just polish it to a mirror shine as best you can.

I personally would avoid using them, but that's just because I don't care too much for any of them in the first place.
Maybe you should avoid them as a signature pokemon of your lead character, but they'd be fine as a less significant member of their team.
Really though I'd agree with >>31962713. It's your story, do what you want. If using a popular mary sue pokemon is enough to ruin your fic there was probably a lot more going wrong besides it.
>>
>>31962638
>Would including them worsen the story automatically
How about we use another test, more conducive to the quality of the story;
>Is there any other species that fills this character role better?
You're then focusing less on "should I use or pass on this species" and more on "what would benefit my story."
If the answer is "No, there are no other species which are more suited," then you can proceed.
I can think of story concepts Eevee can fill that no other pokemon can, for example.

There are stories whispered around dusty motherboards and corrupt drives of the terrible compu-curse known as the rule of two: if you fix a computer, there is surely another you will have to fix immediately after, and it could be your own!

See, the problem was I wasn't getting any.

The first, a family member and housemate's desktop, was a bad dvd drive. It had been giving off warning signs the day before last but then started working again. Turns out, that was just a rally before the last gasp. Time consumer: diagnosing, because I wanted to be absolutely sure that a new one was necessary before we dropped the money. I actually used a stethoscope for the first time in my life!

My laptop has what I thought might have been a permissions or weird antivirus/firewall block but actually seems to be deeper, just mostly silent. One of those things that never bothers you until you get a weirdly persistent error code on some unimportant task and then you start looking into it and find it everywhere. It's too late now, but I'm going to get real aggressive with it tomorrow. Nothing that should result in data loss, at least, but I'm going to back up anyway.

Porygon-Z: Data manifested as matter holding matter containing data, both stored together as data within matter which is then digitized and communicated halfway across the world. No wonder something goes wrong.

Hello I need a "cannonical" team for XY, ORAS, BW and DPPt for both caracters.
>>

It's difficult to pin such things down. Generations might be the best source for that, but they don't show everyone's mons. In fact the most you could get on one character is just half of Blue's team, I think.

Easiest way to do that is to go by gift pokemon. Basically how Red's GSC/HGSS team was handled, going off a playthrough of Yellow.

Example, in XY, you're given 2 starts, Lucario, Lapras, and a Fossil of your choice, leaving room for which Legend you may or may not want to catch, or something to round out the team.

I feel like Trainers on the go are usually either very mobile, going through routes and stuff, specifically following a schedule where they go around looking for fights, or they are "old man on the mountain" style Trainers who are spending a lot of time in a specific area for purposes of developing something about their team.

As such things like being a courier like >>31973959 mentions would much be a thing, because if anything one side can go pick parcels for the other; there could also be escort missions (damsel in distress or researcher lost in the mountains), and it would be very likely that Trainers that have spent long enough in an area would have built enough of a name to do things like trading eg.: move tutoring services for money.

Small tournament prizes usually require a tournament, which suggests those Trainers would move around and gather at predetermined places on the road acknowledged for that purpose. The anime seems to have given recognition to that idea, as it placed a sort of battle ring on the (otherwise barren in the games) Mahogany-Ecruteak route.
>>
>>31974101
Speaking of which, you think people are likely to hire trainers as cheap escorts?

>>
>>31974139
Pretty much definitively. It is one of those "win/win" scenarios where basically you take two things that are already going okay on their own, and have them piggyback on each other for extra bonuses. In particular for the Trainer, who gets all of the EXP, can build some cred among both humans and wild Pokémon, and might even get an extended job offering in the future.

Unlike the process of writing where I can sit down and churn out volumes, the editing process is much slower. I'm really taking my time with this particular revising session because I want nothing more than the best for my conclusion.

Maybe you can relate to that from your own experiences. Posting something "hot off the press" has always led to personal regret as I spot more errors and frantically work to fix them after the fact. Some are embarrassing as hell too.

>How do get motivated?

If you're not already motivated to write something you wanted to, then you didn't really want to in the first place. Seeing something through to the end just means you care about it enough.
>>
>>31980368
That's a very pessimistic way to put it. It's entirely possible to want to do something, yet lack sufficient steam to get the ball rolling. I should know; I suffer from the problem often.
>>
>>31980434
If you want to do something and lack the motivation to overcome the inertia of inaction, then you didn't want to do it enough in the first place.

>>31980471
With an attitude like that, then why do anything at all?

Look, I wasn't asking for some kind of miracle cure or anything. A simple "here's something I do before writing to help spark the fire" or, failing that, an even simpler "just do it" would have sufficed.

Not too much or else I start getting too easily distracted, but enough that it has an effect.
Lowering your inhibitions is a good way to get the ball rolling since "what if my writing sucks" or "what if this idea isn't as good as I think" and other self doubting thoughts tend to kill motivation.
>>
>>31980471
>>31980561

Motivation is not everything. Opportunity and Capability count as well. (Even if at least here I'd count capability as a given)

Much of what helps motivation is to give it a clear road: get the obstacles to Opportunity, which are usually more real and malleable than the ones to Motivation, out of the way.

Looks like an intro chapter to something. Not all that much by itself, beyond a few more hints of how your world works. Still waiting for the fic that turns the convenient perfect servant handwave into something of substance.

Aside: Why do you capitalize types when you don't capitalize other game terms?
>>
>>31980561
I'll voice my thoughts. In order to get motivated, you have to convince yourself that the payoff is worth the effort. That could take some pushing, but that's just how it is.

Even so, don't push yourself too hard. If it becomes obvious that you can't overcome your inertia, then take a break and do something else. Maybe you'll get motivated in the meantime, and if you do, take that opportunity and start writing.

What I strongly advise against, contrary to what's been said here, is seeing you're not motivated and just saying "oh well, guess I didn't really want to write anyway", and then giving up outright. If you ask me, such a rationalization is not only lazy, but will also make you even more convinced not to return to writing, since you'll start to think you never had a chance to complete it in the first place. Don't make a retroactive excuse to explain away your lack of motivation. Make an effort to overcome that lack instead.

Now, I'm not saying you should keep making such an effort forever, and bang your head against whatever you're trying to do for all eternity. Maybe you really truly do not want to write, and you'd rather be doing other things. Or maybe you actually do want to write, and you just need to push yourself to get going.
But you'll never know which is true if you give up whenever you feel like you lack motivation.

That's how I see it. Hopefully it makes sense.

>Still waiting for the fic that turns the convenient perfect servant handwave into something of substance.
Do you care to elaborate?

>Aside: Why do you capitalize types when you don't capitalize other game terms?
Because the elemental types are mostly short, common words, I reduce opportunity for ambiguity this way.
>>
>>31981787
>Do you care to elaborate?

I've read all of your stories, and a recurring question for me is "how the fuck does the system keep working at all?" Pokémon are sapient and born with superpowers, yet there seems to be no meaningful resistance to humanity enslaving them. (Unlike most authors that write that kind of thing, you at least make the frequently one-sided nature of the system a meaningful point.)
Based on that one throwaway line in LL (the only instance in all of your stories where the question is even acknowledged) and the things you posted in these threads the answer seems to be plot convenience.
>>
>>31981833
It isn't so much plot convenience as part of the premise: I'm writing for Pokemon and one of the things about Pokemon, as seen in the games and animation, is that they are quite willing to self-subjugate. The early animation episode when all the pokemon are on their own and have subtitled dialogue, all of the questions asked in Gen V about the nature of the human/pokemon relationship, and the ambiguous ability of pokeballs to instill/promote companionship behaviors—it's fundamental to the universe.

I can muck about with most of the details, but some things are in the foundation. If I decide that because pokemon are capable of sapient thought and basic language it somehow follows that they will lust for freedom from and harbor animosity toward humans, then it's not Pokemon anymore. It turns Pokemon into humans in monster suits and becomes a culture-war piece akin to European colonizing forces versus natives.

I've instead chosen to focus not on Pokemon resisting relationships with humans (overall) but rather on how humans want Pokemon near to them but also maintain particular separations—some reasonable, some traditional, and some arbitrary—and how Pokemon react to these conflicting circumstances.
>>
>>31981904
>It isn't so much plot convenience as part of the premise: I'm writing for Pokemon and one of the things about Pokemon, as seen in the games and animation, is that they are quite willing to self-subjugate. The early animation episode when all the pokemon are on their own and have subtitled dialogue, all of the questions asked in Gen V about the nature of the human/pokemon relationship, and the ambiguous ability of pokeballs to instill/promote companionship behaviors—it's fundamental to the universe.

But that's the thing: I want that to be explored, because it does not intrinsically make sense. By itself, it is plot convenience, and adding sapience only makes it worse, because then it becomes nonsense (and in some cases propaganda, if the writer is oblivious enough). If you want the canon system to remain intact even when you add sapience, you have to actually go into the underlying fundament; merely stating that it works because it works is not an explanation, it's a cop-out. When you construct an alien mindset that is absurd and downright self-destructive by real-world logic, you also need to construct the context that makes that mindset reasonable in its own realm (and again, "canon requires it" is not sufficient).

That is what I am missing when it comes to your work.

By the way, Gen 5 didn't ask questions. It parodied the idea of questioning the system at all. Pay attention to the neutral NPC dialogue in BW if the plot and villains weren't enough. Then, in case you were still 'on the wrong side of history', BW2 then drove BW's actual point home (see Hugh).
>>
>>31981979
You have good points, although I disagree with parts of their conclusions.

It seems to me like you're looking for a fic that presents a particular view of Pokemon—near to but distinct from my own—and you wish that it were written by somebody who otherwise shares my style.

Well, my next (large) piece, should I ever manage to complete it, starts in Johto before shifting to Ocimene, so maybe the different cultural values will make it worth your continued readership (which I appreciate, especially the "I've read all of your" part), but I don't see myself undermining the premise of Pokemon for the sake of applying "real world logic" until it takes the fun out of writing stories about people with magical pets that could destroy them but usually don't.

I'm not asking you to drop the premise, I'm asking you to justify it in-universe. Currently, your explanation appears to be "because canon does it/because the stories require it"; I consider stopping there to be poor worldbuilding when it comes to something this important.

I'm not expecting some sort of pokémon revolution fic set in your world. What I'd like to see is a deeper insight into the mindset of pokémon in your world. You want them to be sufficiently alien in order to make the setup work. Good. Now actually portray how and why that mindset makes sense.

Not cge, but are you familiar with Changelings, compulsions, and Familiars? All of them could be useful for explaining sapient Pokemon following game canon.

In many settings, powerful magic/supernatural ability users also have strange quirks attached to them. Something about them that they can't escape, not necessarily as bad as an addiction, but something they HAVE to do that their power demands. Some of which could be basically to follow the game canon without hesitation. It's not slavery or taking advantage of a sapient person, it's just a thing they have to do because they have those powers. Like in Digimon Tamers, where the teddy bear looking 'Mons said that he has to fight anyways, regardless of the wishes of his pacifist trainer, because that is what they do.

Changelings, from the White Wolf /tg/ games, also explore a simple way to explain behaviors and even power ups. Changelings have access to all the weird and creepy powers of the Fae but with a cost you can easily impose on a Pokemon as it gets stronger. Changelings can have powers like walking on walls or using closets to Teleport around, but there is usually some price they have to pay that looks weird to normal onlookers that is normal to them. In exchange for letting them walk up them, the walls might ask that he spill a different cup of coffee and tea into a certain crack in the wall every Tuesday. However, that closet teleport ability might have a higher cost, like the Changeling forget a memory of a certain place in exchange for being brought to a new one. Applying it to Pokemon, the stronger they become, the more the world asks of them in exchange for it, which Humans have manipulated or learned that follows game canon.

>>31984527
It's the weekend bruh? Why aren't you partying and battling your Pokemahns with your friends over beers?
>>
>>31984584
I don't think that explanation is particularly fitting for Pokémon. They aren't elusive, rare fae-esque creatures, they replace most, if not all, animals above a certain size. It's an explanation, but it uses that type of magic that is arbitrary and impenetrable, so it's not much of a step up (it swaps one black box for another). Then there's the flavor issue: Pokémon is a science-fantasy world, and drifting too much into "it's magic, I don't have to explain it" can easily be detrimental.
I'm not a fan of "impossible to understand" world mechanics in the first place; you're the author, do your damn job and create an explanation. There are points where greater detail becomes impossible, but as far as I'm concerned, those points should be somewhere around the level of elemental particles and/or actual divinity.
>>
>>31981904
>"willingness to self-subjugate" is a fundamental.
I'd posit that is [citation needed], honestly. At least I've never seen a strong argument that they see it (and expect it to work) like subjugation, which has a very explicit meaning.

>>31981979
>I want that to be explored
>construct with context
Bear in mind your priorities are not the author's, and we don't owe a given "order of development" in as much as it makes things easier to answer to explore different facets of the Pokéverse. Sometimes, we don't have an answer just because we don't have it, not because there is none.

>If you want the canon system to remain intact even when you add sapience,
Wait, what do you want here? The canon system already has sapience, and it already works. I'd posit it is the interpretations that remove sapience and change the overall Trainer-Trained status quo that have the burden to "keep to the fundamentals" or not. (But with the caveat that I see worldbuiding for the franchise as aggregation, whereas other people see it as separation / decanting).

>>31983340
>"I consider not following this specific order poor worldbuilding"
It really depends on whether the worldbuilding is...well, "top-down" or "bottom-up", but also a fair thing to mind, there si a difference between asking an author go develop in a certain direction (towards a given understanding) and asking them to move past the franchise's anthropic principle; when you do the former, eventually the answer to questions *is* "because the canon does it" (note: not "because the stories require it") and the difference between interpretations comes to the threshold; when you do the latter, as >>31981904 mentions, you wholly change premises and it is no longer Pokémon (or whatever franchise), but in fact raises to the level of 50 Shades of Grey beginning as Twilight fanfiction.

I seem to see you are interested in the former than than the latter, but it is important to mind the gap between them.
>>
>>31985668
>The canon system already has sapience

As an exception, not the norm (especially in the main games).
Then there's also the implication that pokémon don't really have free will ("no bad pokémon, only bad trainers" - this is from the anime by the way), which partially invalidates the potential opened up by making pokémon sapient.

>it already works

A dubious statement, unless you believe that mechanics should not have anything to do with flavor. You can't make that statement with reasonable certainty when the main depiction of the system cannot portray it past certain limits.

>(But with the caveat that I see worldbuiding for the franchise as aggregation, whereas other people see it as separation / decanting)

You're contradicting yourself. You've stated multiple times in the past that you consider game mechanics an unreliable source of information. You filter what the canon presents and remove what doesn't fit according to your judgment, just like any other author who gives a shit.

>eventually the answer to questions *is* "because the canon does it"

Not for everything. There are many world aspects that exist purely because they do in canon, but there are few instances where that would be a valid reason not to put some thought into their in-universe origins, functionality and implications.

>I seem to see you are interested in the former than than the latter, but it is important to mind the gap between them.

I don't demand hyper-realism or radical deconstruction or anything like that. All I ask for is that authors actually THINK about what they're writing and not accept blatant non-logic or intellectual laziness as an answer. Far too many authors seem to not realize that when they write, they are in control of the rules of the world, and thus any choices they make for the story are THEIR choices. Canon is not untouchable. Canon blackboxes that the entire setting turns around SHOULD be made transparent, not simply accepted as a given.

>I'm asking you to justify it in-universe.
You're asking me to explicitly "tell" the audience a justification for why Pokémon have an affinity for human companionship at the cost of their liberty. Alas, I can't even explain how Pokémon understand verbal combat commands.

>>31985668
>At least I've never seen a strong argument that they see it (and expect it to work) like subjugation, which has a very explicit meaning.
Pokemon not only permit their own subjugation, but they then work to subjugate others of their own kind by aiding their trainers/masters to capture more pokemon. What's notable about Pokémon is that that subjugation evolves through friendship to become subordination (or insubordination in the case of Ash's adopted Charizard). This happens in real-world situations, but only in rare and special cases, while in Pokémon it comes swiftly, nearly universally, and is held as the ideal for which to strive—and to Anon's chagrin, Pokémon have an affinity that often promotes this end.

>>31985905
I wish you luck in finding another author who can live up to your expectations. Or, in you writing your own praiseworthy tales, assuming you haven't already.
>>
>>31986333
>"tell"

I don't believe getting that information across necessitates bad storytelling. It appears you're setting up a false dichotomy. Yes, at some point you may have to "tell" the reader your world's rules, if they are abstract enough. Even then, in the right context, the reader won't notice minor violations of "show, don't tell" if the information adds more to the sequence it appears in than the delivery of it takes away.

>Pokémon have an affinity for human companionship at the cost of their liberty

Considering your world's history, there has to be an actual explanation for that trait.

>I can't even explain how Pokémon understand verbal combat commands

You are the one choosing to limit yourself.
>>
>>31985905
>As an exception, not the norm (especially in the main games).
Hence I speak franchise-wise. The system is already there, it works. If you choose to work with only the projection of the franchise where it doesn't work or doesn't even exist, just as has been pointed in other places: "You are the one choosing to limit yourself".

Point noted re: the main games, but I don't think they properly plant the issue. Added to the limitations of the videogame interface, there's the fact that the games barely if ever give avenues to the Pokémon that could be assumed to be sapient (such as the Lake Trio). I'd chalk it to the difference between evidence of absence, and absence of evidence.

>game mechanics
>Contradicting
I'm not. You are the one adding more meaning to my words than the one they carry. I've stated that I consider the games faulty avenues of information, to be better used alongside other sources, not that I believe the games to carry no information overall. And I've stated that I see this as aggregation, not that it is the *only* thing I can do or must do.

>"because the canon does it" not for everything
We agree on that. Most likely we only disagree in where the "where" lies, though I guess that comes down to each author's interpretation.

An example of where I'd chalk it up to "the canon does it" would be Pokémon can be caught and turned into energy / data / random, but rice balls, donuts or things that in theory are Pokémon parts but exist independently in nature (Rafflesia off a Venusaur's back?) apparently can't. Sure you *can* go all sciencey or fantasyy about that, and welcome if you do, but down the line there's no need to, in particular if it just makes things easier to crash than it makes easier to explain. There's no obligation.

>laziness
>obligation
>SHOULD
I can see a disconnect there, in that you seem to think that merely for adapting a franchise, it must be treated all-or-nothing. Wish I was on hire, if it has to come down to that.

I'm beginning to be convinced that the better a summary is the more doomed the story will be. Saw a story today with this summary and I dang well know in two chapters it will completely devolve to shit:
"Imagine a world where everything is equal. There are no homeless people. No one works. They are stuck in the plans of The Minister. Everything is powered by robots and Pokemon. Pokemon do not have freedom. Humans have a set time to eat, to sleep, and to die. They will not live past 70. But some people have broken out and they're going to take it down. No matter the cost."

So the guy who was asking about why Sapient Pokemon would willingly let themselves be "subjugated" got me thinking. I tried thinking of other /tg/ things I could use as reference besides the Changelings I mentioned earlier, and I can't really.

Thinking about it, Elves and Dwarves should be dominating the scene, right? Long life, access to cool powers, a rich history before 'Umies showed up (sound familiar?) should have left them to run the place.

But it's usually because of GM Fiat that they don't. Sometimes natural disasters befell them, they fell to one of the Seven Sins® that collapsed them, or like DnD Dragons, they just don't get along and have natural inclinations to fight each other.

As for why work for Humans, probably the same reason explained in the DnD Comic (the IDW one, go read it) and they just weaponised idea guys. They know that 'Umies are crazy enough to do things they could never think of and they would get stronger in the process.

You're a little more than half-right. They're not quite used to Kalos yet after four years in Sinnoh and shit also hit a considerable number of fans so the two are a bit frazzled. They get better, mostly 'cos they have to.

Also glad to hear ya liked Charles. I was a bit worried about his speaking part since he hadn't properly said anything until now and so there was a lot I was worried I'd screw up on.
>>

Don't worry I'm autistic enough to be vocal if I felt Charles wasn't "right". But he's perfect. Also I enjoyed the description of d'Artagnan's voice. It was vivid and easy to mentally illustrate. As always, I eagerly await the next chapter.

On that note, any plans for Only Viridian? Are you steadily chugging away or have you hit some sort of roadblock?
>>
>>31993928
Progress on OV hit a major roadblock when I realized I wrote myself into a sort of corner with Taro and Kiyoko. The original ending I had envisioned is almost impossible to accomplish without ass pulling, but I've come up with something else to use instead as of a week or so ago. It'll get updated maybe in a month or two after I've hammered out a logical path from point a to b.

In the meantime I have some careful threads to pull in ACPC if I want a scene I've been really wanting to do to actually come to fruition, and another short dose of fluff in EH coming through the pipeline.
>>
>>31994068
Word of warning, only because you sound just like me circa BSTF Ch.6:

I liked it. Someone has to pick last and the choice wouldn't always be what the chooser was hoping for. It's an interesting subject that I hadn't seen covered before.

It seemed a little odd that he would be that forward and outspoken about his disappointment despite being so nervous about last minute rejection and the starter's impression of him just moments before.

>that review though
>>
>>31996627
>Someone has to pick last and the choice wouldn't always be what the chooser was hoping for.
My current WIP has an early moment that briefly visits a lab, wherein there is a quick mention of a certain unpopular starter being left behind, so that's another glance at this matter from a different angle.

>It seemed a little odd that he would be that forward and outspoken about his disappointment despite being so nervous about last minute rejection and the starter's impression of him just moments before.
I'm not sure if I'm misinterpreting your sentence, or if (actual spoiler) you assumed that the scene opens on the trainers when it actually opens on the starters.

>Your syntax is very confusing and hard to follow.

>I'd recommend getting a beta reader from here:
Probably the only potentially good advice here. Still, I thought the read was A okay.

>[Grass-, Water-, and Fire-type pokemon]
>And while I appreciate that you're not capitalizing pokemon, types shouldn't be capitalized either.
This one "Farla method of style" always bothered me. You are making an exception for certain capitalisation but not for others in the most ambiguous way imaginable. If a Pokemon species is capitalized then why not also its typing, which there are only around 20 of in the universe?

I thought you managed your speakers particularly well in this chapter. You used plenty of action to supplement your speech to keep the dialogue from being unnecessary weighed down. The only criticism I felt was worth mentioning is the lack of explaining some of your world building. I don't know what the Miss Corintalla controversy is for example and I'm left even more confused by the mention of "tail-tip insulator caps" afterwards. To be frank, it came across as a reference to something you or someone else had written. Left unexplained I'm not exactly sure what to make of it.

This is a well written story intro and I would hope you continue it. I too like Mudkips.

>capitalized
If we wanted to be pedantic, the games always capitalize the Pokémon types' names. It's the species names being genericized on the logic that in a pokemon world, they would be common instead of proper nouns, that deviates. And with further good reason, in my opinion: Since species names are used as proper names, the majuscule letter disambiguates the species and a definite but anonymous member thereof.

>controversy
The controversy has been mentioned indirectly once before (or twice? I can't remember off-hand if that line survived editing…), but this is the first time that there was any reason to refer to it explicitly.
>insulation
A similar product is featured in my next story's WIP, although it's tailored for a different Fire-type that has an outstanding open-flame concern when traveling in confined quarters. In both cases, that's reflecting back to C/E 7, when mention is made that some pokemon are by policy kept in their balls because their nature makes them a hazardous liability aboard public transportation.
>what to make of it
I'm a big tease and I like to foreshadow things planned for future stories.
>>
>>31935576
Namespeak sucks. In the anime, it "works" because you're hearing all the tone and inflection. It's pretty much presented as them speaking a different language.
In writing, it can generally fuck right off unless the Pokemon really aren't relevant at all to things -- it doesn't convey shit and looks awful for the most part.
>>
>>31999024
Sounds good bud. Nothing wrong with hinting at the future. Seems like you at least have a plan in mind.

The other thing about capitalized types is when referring to objects in nature rather than the types themselves. Examples coming across in text such as, "fire is dangerous" or "Steel had been tough to break through", are we talking about the types here or actual combustion and iron alloys? By using caps for typing the possible ambiguity vanishes surprisingly fast in the reader's head. Of course, context clues are your best friend, but seeing the types the same way they are stylized in-game as you had mentioned is beneficial from a visual standpoint.
