At least one Apricorn is required- and we can make either offensive or defensive gear. What's made is based on the apricorn type. Offensively, an Apricorn can give you a huge boost to what ever elemental type the apricorn corresponds to. Orange is fire, Blue is water, Green is grass, etc. Defensively, they can provide you with some neat and useful abilities, but they usually come with a few minor drawbacks.

Charmander: And I see you've got some extra materials too. Those shell bits and slaking fur and stuff can be added as extras to boost the bonuses of the gear we make. You can usually guess what kind of boost it is by what type of pokemon you got those items from. That slaking fur would give you a nice physical attack boost, for example.

Turtonator: Good, Charmander. And if ever you want to renovate your home or friend areas, talk to Timburr, I'm sure he introduced himself too. You'll need special items for friend areas though.

Oshawott: Sounds interesting, but we're out of money for the time being.

Turtonator: Hmm... let's see, well first, why don't you leave all your building materials here, we'll set up a personal storage for your team. Second, your Seaking parts are worthless as gear add-ins, but you might be able to find a collector in the city to sell them to. There's fin and horn fanatics all over this city. Try by the TM bank.
You pick out what kind of armor you want now and we'll make it. You go sell those Seaking bits and by the time you're back, they'll be done and you'll have money to pay.

Palderville was just meant to be the first starter village, and they weren't selling too much good stuff there anyway. That said, I don't think we ever actually visited any of the shops there.
