You can easily just beat their mon in a few seconds and get the gym
The problem is when your own team snipes you and you can't knock theirs out to get your spot, especially when the next spot takes 5 times as long to prestige or if its the last spot in a gym
this shitty design is part of what led people to multi accounting which leads to taking 10th spots in gyms

the poor design flaws all over the game all lead to negative anti-social behaviour rather than promoting meeting and socialising with others like they claim to intend

Even without STAB, dragon pulse is great. Unlike gyarados which dies so quickly, lapras can get out a few pulses and they're so fast

In that picture you can see all the mons I ever powered up. They need to be with 91%+IV AND best moveset for Atk or Def. The only exception so far has been Rhydorn because he is a 15/15/15.

Alluring that you think I had to cheat to accomplish what I did.
Thing is I have been playing quite a lot, completed the 2 national dexes (Europe and Japan thanks to work) and Im working my way to complete a 91+%IV dex (sitting at 108/146) with 3 perfect mons (Rapidash, Arbok and Rhydorn). Currently tlvl31.5, but 1 Dragonite and Rhydorn dont have perfect movesets (as you can see by the "XXX" in their names). You just need to be patient, hatch and catch a lot and you will succeed too, no need to be bitter.

Also, let me show you how many 91+%IV Flareon and Jolteon I had to evolve before getting that single Vaporeon (which isn't even the highest IV Eevee I had), pic related.

Sniping isn't really an issue when the other team does it (despite that being the only thing their anti-sniping update did), because you can take it back in a matter of 20-30 seconds.
The worst kind of sniping is your own team at high level gyms, because it takes a good while to train up 5000/10000 prestige just for some wally to nab your spot since Niantic didn't implement their anti-sniping stuff here for whatever reason.

That was the first Dragonite I caught, but it was around 500 CP, so I walked it up to level 30 (already had most of my candies anyway)
Started walking it again so I could get enough candies to evolve my 100% Dratini, and are just continuing to walk it

91+% is a nice cutoff as you have less than 1% chances of encountering a higher one.

There are only 6pokemon worth powering up right now: Dragonite, Snorlax, Rhydorn, Gyarados, Vaporeon and Lapras. Hopefully you would power up only those with at least 91+%IV (aka 41+/45, aka less than 1% chance of encountering them) and with best defensive movesets. After those, it's time for their counters and general sweepers (Exeggcutor, Alakazam).

Spending dust in anything else is a waste.

If they introduce PvP and TM things will change of course.

Besides, if breeding ever gets introduced (Nintendo won't allow it in my opinion, same as TM. But from a business pov it will be extremely lucrative for them), having high IV mons (as in with one or several 15s) could be good. If it's never introduced, at least it's an exciting achievement to add to a bland game.

Rhydon is so cheap as fuck, but can easily get 2700CP without using any stardust, which is mid-top gym spots.
Not like gym spots matter, just avoid being dead last. If you're at the middle, the only time you're Pokemon will get knocked out will be if the entire gym goes down, so it wouldn't matter if you were further up anyway.

Dragonite is my second best attacker behind Vaporeon, I use it when I can't be bothered playing properly and just spam the screen. It's pretty decent vs Snorlax too since it has no counters other than blast the living shit out of it
