>>31317602

I started out with AV Kartana and didn't really use the fourth move either, plus I just auto-lost the mirror so I switched to Sash.

Of course, I prefer to make a lot of switches, so I end up either having to lead with Kartana or sacrifice something to get it in, which doesn't really jive with my playstyle. Really wish there was another Pokemon that better gelled with my team. Seems like it's more or less there because it looks good on paper.

Landorus-T has the highest usage, yet isn't banned. There are some other examples of things that are widly used yet they remain unbanned. The ban system cares about 'unbalancedness' or 'brokenness', not usage. Sure, if something is broken it will most likely be very used therefore making it obvious that it is broken, but that doesn't mean it's based on usage.
>>
>>31318546

Are the Tapu the new version of "Genies of a healthy meta"?
>>
>>31317525
Horn Leech if you want to keep HP intact or Wood Hammer + enough speed to beat 8 speed Fini.

Seriously, if you ever used a Fini you'd know it has a very predictable spread as you can't afford to run anything in speed besides the bare minimum because EVERYTHING needs to go into bulk + s.atk.

Bulu is one of these things which can afford to do something stupid like double grass STAB because it doesn't have much better to do. It's either balls to the wall nuking with Wood Hammer or the occasional Nature Madness for Celesteela's because Rock Slide does fuck all.

>>31318544
Not unless someone wins a major tournament with one and with the way everyone and their mother runs Dazzling Gleam or Psychic it has no chance.
>>
>>31318768
No because they don't look like shit and don't outclass literally every single Pokemon that share their typing.
>>
>>31318768

For the most part, you can't just slap the Tapus on a team and just outstat and ability everything. They all have clearly defined niches and uses, and while very strong aren't so strong that you have to use one on every team.

>>31318870

Fair enough. I've just seen a Tapu on almost every competitive team (generally Koko or Lele) and was wondering if it was Lando-T and Thundurus all over again. I know the meta's still developing and settling down but the prevelance of terrains is just startling
>>
>>31318912
>I know the meta's still developing and settling down but the prevelance of terrains is just startling

They are 570BST Pokemon with a god-tier ability and with the arguably best type of the game. The cherry on top being that VGC17 is a format where 3/4 of the dex is banned so they have less competition to worry about.

No shit they are gonna be everywhere. They are excellent Pokemon.
>>
>Wondering why am I not getting all the KOs I should be getting
>Turns out that Showdown made my set Jolly instead of Adamant thanks to the sets suggestion crap it has
Holy shit, what an annoying thing.

I specially hate when it makes my Pokemon atk IV 0 for no reason at all. It has happened with things that have overwhelmingly superior atk over sp atk too.
>>
>>31318912
They are very good, but they are somewhat easy to deal with, and don't provide a genie-tier support to the rest of the team, making them less obnoxious than them. Not like I haveanything against the genies besides their looks.
But yeah, with Landorus around there's really no reason to use any other ground type, while there are still some viable Electric, Grass, Water, Psychic and Fairy choices, depending on the team.

It sounds like nothing but when it's dishing out untauntable 100% paralysis and that fucking flinch rate plus the inevitable Fake Out. Even decent damage feels like a lot when you're being stripped of your turn on a regular basis.

Go for it and you always have to take into account it's partner, possible Spiky Shields or Encores and it becomes a royal fucking bitch of a support who unlike most can actually do damage.

Bulu is amazing in dedicated trick room teams. Protect, wood hammer/horn leech, sub/swords dance, rock slide/brick break/smart strike. And he wins the terrain war. Pair it with Comfey (floral healing, helping hand, trick room)
>>
>>31322319
Y'know, when I first made my team, it had Bulu+Comfey. But Comfey seemed like dead weight, I never found myself wanting to bring it. Man, I wish Incineroar had its HA, I'd make a TR team in a heartbeat.

So how viable actually is Alola-Muk with Minimize? Is it a meme?
>>
>>31323646
If you for some reason don't want to run Taunt, Shadow Sneak or even Protect, you might as well use the slot for it. It's not consistent, but when it works, it can save your ass. It's not as viable anymore though, because of Kartana walling you completely and being able to always hit with Smart Strike.

If I'm gonna be using Goodra, should I use a bulky or offensive Arcanine?
>>
>>31328793
you'll get the hang of it by playing, so fuck around a bit in the vgc ladder
>>
>>31332336
what?

Euro friends, American here, to start to get a look in on a scene I don't really know well please post which country you're from and who you consider the top players (5 or so, go longer if you wanna) from your country to be. I guess any up and coming playres to keep an eye out for would be nice too.
I'll try to find streamed/recorded games featuring them and generally look them up and such.

Everything VGC related I read just seems so American or Japanese centric.
>>
>>31332301
Offensive will probably be better, Goodra actually lacks offense even at it's best it gets sponged easily. So having a nuke like Arcanine who can support it's weaker defense stat to boot would compliment it well.

europeans just like to play the same safe-play stall teams

I honestly love this meta, even if I often lose because the teams I make can't check all the shit people come up with, it's very fun going to BS and local tournaments and see what people come up with.

It's like Elo Hell but with good players.

If you don't have other EQ weak pokémon, including togedamaru is a solid choice.

I wanna run a Hail Team, preferably one with Alolatales. Any recomendations for a VGC newfag?
>>
>>31335997
Don't run dedicated Hail. It's shit.

A-Ninetales is a good Pokemon though.
>>
>>31335997
Don't use more than 1 ice pokémon, that ice pokémon must be Ninetales or scarf Vanilluxe.
Yeah.
>>
>>31336015
So just run it like in Singles, as an Ninetales+5goodmons that get help from screens? Any recomendations on pokes I should use?
>>
>>31336050
Specs Fini is the hottest meme.
>>
>>31336050
Look at OP picture. There's two teams that should give you a general idea.
>>
How do you transition from being a pretty good singles player to doing VGC? There's a tournament near me soon and I want to compete (I already took the day off work) and so I've been playing a lot of VGC on Showdown but I can't seem to make a good team. Pls don't rec youtube channels/vids.
>>
>>31336101
hail team != snow warning mon + a non-hail team
>>
>>31336153
See
>>31336015
>>
>>31336132
First step: Don't make a team yourself. Even if it's frowned upon by some autists, taking someone else's team (with full spreads, of course) is the best way to learn the metagame and understand the mechanics a bit better, it may also boost your confidence levels since you're going to win if the team is good enough. It also makes you used to use certain Pokemon, and that will be useful when you're finally ready to craft a team of your own, since it will fit your playstyle.
>>
>>31336132
literally read the op
>>
>>31336101
I'm looking for something more specific than just a "general idea". I was already using something similar to team 5 in the op, but ended up being gimmicky(power of alchemy+slush rush aloslash was fun but stupid in hindsight) so I dropped it and came here to get more ideas, but all I see is thnat hail+goodstuff is the way to go.
>>
>>31336211
Do you know of a good team to start with/good places to look for teams to use? Thanks so much.
>>
>>31335439
europeans are the ones that bring the most weird anti-meta teams at world level, you never see stuff like jumpluff or breloom from americans
>>
>>31336132
Pick a team that someone else uses. Go find the guys on the top of the Showdown ladder and look at their team. Watch replays.

Mimic the team, learn to mimic the plays, then find a counter to THAT team and start to think about shit from there.
>>
>>31335492
Sounds like your other five are leaving a hole that can't be filled. You're probably better swapping your dead weight and one of your preferred mons for a better pair.
>>
>>31336211
>>31336417
Not that guy, but what's the most generic team of six you can imagine? Is there a band of most-used mons (ala CHALK) that it would be best to familiarize myself with first? If I'm going to rip off a team, what 'mon would be best to have on that team to get used to them?

From what I've seen, it looks like the tapus are really common, plus Kartana, Arcanine, and Garchomp? Kind of basing this off the OP.
>>
>>31335492
If you've really, really checked out every single possible pairing match-up with your 'dead weight' mon and the rest of your team, and I mean REALLY (and you probably haven't), then you should look at your team's core and maybe try and reassemble from there.

It's like when you're doing a rubiks cube and you've only got one square left, but it's wrong. You can't change that one square without going back a few steps first.
>>
>>31336427
Wouldn't replacing one of the 5 that are working well together so far be counterproductive?
>>
>>31336469
Fini/Kartana/Arcanine/Porygon 2/Garchomp/Muk is the hottest memeteam right now.
>>
>>31336493
not if those five preclude the finding of a sixth. An almost complete solution with no path to completion isn't as good as a less complete solution that has a path to completion. You may have to backtrack.
Or, just see >>31336477

Here's a pretty standard one. It's not THE standard, but it covers all the bases. You got your slow mons if you know you're facing Trick Room, some stall options, some sweep options, hard counters to Steel-typed threats like Kartana and opposing Celesteela, phys/spec sweeper options (give Garchomp Poison Jab for Tapus).

It's not perfect, but it'd do for a start, for you to get used to the meta.

>gastrodon
how's 2016 treating ya?
>>
>>31336662
1561 elo. How's yours?
>>
>>31336662
Celesteela is the shit. It's easily the best part of my team.

Also, Gastrodon is good for the abundance of Rain teams atm with Storm Drain.
>>
>>31336272
Generally speaking, nothing says you can't use Blizzard on a non-Ice mon as well, it may not be your ideal of a 'Hail team'.

But Snow Warning mon + Fini w/ Blizzard is something you will actually regularly see and could constitute using your Hail too.

Also for the record Vanilluxe is the most successful Hail mon, it is literally a one trick pony but at the same time it does it's thing well and it stops you pulling stupid shit. Really it's the one time where being a mono Ice type is actually a blessing, x4 Steel weakness is what ruins Ninetales mainly.
>>
>>31336469
>>31336558
What happened to Celesteela?
>>
Is Fini with Taunt any good or should I just run Specs?
>>
>>31336989
fini with taunt is fine
>>
About to start soft-reseting for tapu lele and tapu fini. What's the preferred nature and hidden power for those two? Timid and HP Fire for both?
>>
>>31336314
Late, but there are a couple teams posted here that are good for straters. Another place you might find them is Trainer Tower.
>>
>>31337315
timid or modest for lele, modest, bold, or calm for fini. Fini usually runs bulk over speed.
>>
How do I make this team better?
http://pastebin.com/0eReD4qn

For instance, Gastrodon's sole purpose is that I bring it if I think the other team is running rain. Marowak is the same, except it's for when I think they're running Trick Room. These Pokemon feel useless otherwise.

I don't know how to analyze my losses. Like when I sit back and as myself "Why did I lose?" It always seems to be a different reason or a reason I can't pinpoint. I seem to be going about 50/50 on matches on Showdown.

Same. I'm just sort-of bumbling through it. I don't feel like I know WHY I've won most of my matches, other than occasionally I go for some ridiculous play like Leech Seeding both remaining opponents and stalling them out with Celesteela, or my Stockpile Muk that works weirdly well.

Other than that, I've got no idea why I lose, unless it's some insanely specific strategy I wasn't even thinking of. Oricorio with Pheromosa and Quiver Dance as a start, for example.

Hey guys I never comment on these things, but I really want to make my hail core with Ninetales and Sandslash because they're old Bros that are viable again, but I don't know hot to get their hidden abilities since they never call for help
I know it's possible because I saw someone on stream use a Ninetales with snow warning

Yeah I know. They're not meant to be used together.

I used to run a Conkeldurr with Wide Guard and Lum Berry in doubles.
>>
>>31339237
Only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Why do you have a Focus Sash on your Tapu Koko and not a Life Orb? You haven't used a Life Orb at all, and Koko is the fastest thing in the meta, so it's probably not going to get OHKO'd before it can do anything.
>>
>>31339510
I agree but Tapu Koko is extremely fragile and for me it works perfectly with Focus Sash because it can take an Earthquake and then hit again
>>
>>31340031
f-focus sash!
>>
>>31338932
Yeah, figuring out why you won is a lot harder than figuring out why you lost. For losing though, it's easier: try to figure out what mon of your opponent's that you needed to kill, and what you needed to do to kill it. Did you lose your counter too early? Did you simply make a misprediction? Did you not bring your counter at team preview? If you can't figure anything out, then it may well be that your team has issues.
>>
>>31339237
Replace x scissor for night slash on kartana imo
