I think there is wiggle room. I mean, if no battles have taken place yet you're not at an advantage by changing your team.

I mean mons maaaybe but if you put say 3 extra grass mons on your team cause your fighting water first, you'll screw over yourself the rest of the tournament. But I can see why you'd not be allowed to switch mons last minute.

Switching moves last minute before your first battle (and not switching them after obviously) I don't see a problem with.

Hey everyone- I'm not involved in this tournament, but i am having a small monotype competition with three friends of mine in about a week, and would love some advice or suggestions about my team. Ive never really played much more competitively than Battle Facilities, Battle Spot, and vs friends, though all of us EV train and IV breed.

Effectively, everybody battles everyone else, most wins is champ (and wins 10 dollars from everyone else).
No legendaries or UB allowed.

I will be using Steel Types, and my friends will be using Bug, Ghost, and Dark

I'm not sure what i should put in my final slot- i was considering Scizor, but my Bug training friend is using one, so I'd prefer not to. However, there's really not a huge number of Steel Types in Alola.
However, while that limits my options, it's also very helpful in that it stops my friends from steamrolling my entire team with Volcarona or Mega Houndoom, for instance.

Is A-Sandslash viable at all in Singles?

Sandslash is pretty mediocre without Hail support.
Scizor is good, but you're right in that it compounds your fire weakness too much.
Have you considered Dugtrio?
Being ground type and being able to learn some rock moves via TM might help.

Then just use Dual Screens you memer. It still resists its main STAB and has a broken typing. Skarmory is useless in every monotype aspect that isn't Smogon's 6v6 and you're not facing any ground or fire users to set sneaky rocks or survive EQ. You will never use Metagross in all of those matchups.

On another note- from what i know of my friends teams- Ghost friend is using Chandelure to counter me, and is also bringing Mega Gengar, Dhelmise, and Mimikyu. Dark can threaten me with Pangoro and Krookodile, and is also bringing Hydreigon and either Mega Sharpedo or Sableye.

Bug friend cant threaten me too much with whats available in SM, but what can i do to counter the others?

Also, i like Bastiodon's design. How useless is he?

Invest on SpD to survive Chande's Fire Blast and go for Shadow Claw instead of Iron Head since you never need Steel STAB on many stuff. Nothing can touch Mega Scizor after you get rid of Hydre and Chande besides a Sableye burn. I hate Luke to death, but slap a Scarf and spam Aura Sphere I guess, dude is too slow and Vacuum Wave is illegal until bank, might as well use a physical set and switch in into Justified boosts for mindgames. Bastiodon is the worst. Google Alolan Dugtrio or something, I hate when people ignore it. And like I said, you're never going to use Metagross in these matchups.
