The break system was a mistake edition. Old thread >>31159339

PSMD and Gates download: http://pastebin.com/kh7GcnYm

Check the guides at >>>/vg/hbg if you don't know how to install the game. You won't lose any online features or anything doing so, don't worry. You'll be able to do everything that you'd normally be able to and much more!

MD Exploration Pack, which contains a DS emulator and roms, Wiiware roms, and custom portraits: https://mega.nz/#F!gFlVkSLI!tXbyoO5rwfUYnb9jf7yVsQ

REMINDER: If you need a rescue, post your region. Due to a few things that make no sense, rescues are region locked. It's shitty, but be sure to mention if you're European or American.

I'm currently playing through Gates to Infinity, only on the basis that it's the only ones of the handelds I have not played at all yet (Not counting the wiiware titles just yet, will probably try it out if I can find a way to do so)

I could then finally give a proper opinion on each title, I guess.

I don't remember if I picked Vulpix or Shinx as my partner in Sky. I'm leaning more on Vulpix, but I really don't remember because it's been too long and I've restarted my old file several times.

Charmander (I wasn't even trying on either one)

Riolu (I think it recommended me a Turtwig, but I prefer a decent movepool with a little reach)
Fennekin (couldn't remember the recommendation, but liked Fennekin for being cute)

>Rescue 2nd play
Cyndaquil
Squirtle

>Sky 2nd play
Riolu (cheated on the quiz to get "sassy" nature)
Torchic

What should I do for Super's 2nd playthrough? I finished the maingame and everything is normal, but I am not sure if I want to restart.

In my case, a friend lend me his copy of Darkness, and I never beat that game because I had to give it back. So, because I liked the game but Sky was already announced, I waited and bought Sky.

Now, on another topic, I've got a question. Say I want my partner to be an Eevee in Super, and I manage to do so. Thing is, I want her to evolve into Espeon. Is there any way to make it so that you get the evolution you want, or is it random? And by evolving, I mean the one during the story, not the postgame.
>>
>>31234912
From what I've heard, starters will always evolve into the evolution listed first in the dex. So Ralts will always become Gardevoir, Snorunt Glalie, and Eevee Vaporeon.
>>
>>31234795
I got Time when I was younger and Sky for my birthday from a friend.

I got Darkness a few years later at a garage sale for 5 bucks to complete my collection (but I never beat it since I've already beaten Time and Sky, and Sky is a lot more fun to play).

Maybe it just checks the species
if it's a main starter it jumps 2
if it can't evolve it just doesn't evolve
everyone else goes to the next one

I think the game uses the evolution order instead of the actual Pokédex order (I don't want to check right now thouggbrtj bit it shoudl e like that) so crossgen evoltuons aren't a problem.

Citra works for this game but you have to disable HW for boss fights and some cutscenes. Which means that Dark Matter is basically unbeatable because the cutscenes go on forever but apart from that the emulation works at about 130% speed for me.

A comic that is not horrible. Don't know if I can recommend it because I have no idea how shit my taste is. Heard of it via TVTropes, who also recommended PMD: Silver Resistance.

I've heard good things about Silver Resistance, and apparently it's so popular that there is not only a spin-off of it, but also fanfics of the fanfic. Been through 30-ish chapters and I don't hate it enough to stop, but I don't love it enough to take a break from 4chan to keep up.

Is there a pokémon that could even possibly EVEN TOUCH Drifblim? Let alone defeat him? And I’m not talking about Aftermath Drifblim. I’m not talking item holding Drifblim either. Hell, I’m not even talking about Ominous Wind Drifblim. I'm not even talking about Drifblim at max stats. I'm talking about PMD Drifblim with the Minimize buffs and Unburden (with no held item and being capable of both Gust and Shadow Ball), at quadruple speed from Unburden Ominous Wind, equipped with his Breeze Scarf, a Draft Ring, control of the IQ Skills and Quick Striker for a quad hitting normal attack, with stat drinks and Life Seeds implanted in him so he has 999 HP and 255 in all stats and can perform Ominous Wind spam while being an expert in shrinking and evading attacks, while also having an immunity to Electric and Ghost attacks from the Sky and Nether Globes, and also being permanently at double speed due to the Sky Gem, and having every beneficial swap item in the Treasure Bag for a grand stat total of 275 Attack, 269 Defense, 295 Special Attack, and 281 Special Defense, after using Ominous Wind enough to hit +10 to Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense.

So far the following fan works have not made me hurt myself:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/PokemonMysteryDungeonSilverResistance
>PMD Silver Resistance is considered to be the most popular fanwork of PMD to the point where it has spin-offs, which means it's probably the least shit. I plan to get back on it since I fell off a week ago.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/PokemonMysteryDungeonVictoryFire
>PMD Victory Fire is definitely not shit in terms of art, and I usually catch up on it once every 3 weeks. I believe a new page is made every week or so.

http://pmd-rad.smackjeeves.com/comics/2138526/pokemon-mystery-dungeon-r-a-d/
>It ain't too bad, but you may not like the art style. It's a comic, so you can probably find out quickly whether or not this is for you.

http://www.ssp-comics.com/comics/toe/?page=1
Also a comic, but it seems to be less MD-ish since there are no humans mentioned, the plot is dark, and it's more mature-oriented overall.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/PokemonMysteryDungeonReflectingBalance
>This one I fell off of. As far as my faded memory can tell, it was probably decent enough for me to read. I wasn't feeling it like I was with most of the PMD things I've read.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanficRecs/PokemonMysteryDungeon
Here is a list of some others. For some reason, I've read through "Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum". While I don't regret reading it, since it gave me a new perspective, I have no positive recommendations for it. I found it to be weird that they added modern food to the setting and also made it about Earth and the Pokemon (MD) world be parallel with one occasionally spilling into the other (which would explain the modern food and such, but I'm sensing plotholes).

>I was sad that this stopped. He's probably alive, but it's been at least a year since he's written a chapter. Anyways, I actually enjoyed this one. It's dark, gritty, and it gives detail to what the protagonist is physically feeling, which adds to the more mature-ish tone of the fic.

I would recommend reading Victory Fire and Silver Resistance the most because of how popular it is, but I liked PMD: Overthrown and wished it came back.

Anyways, feel free to give me your opinion. Elaborate why my tastes are shit/not shit.

Made it up to Jirachi and I just can't convince myself to keep going with SMD.

>story moves really slowly and boss silhouettes on the main screen show how close you are to the end
>5/8 bosses in and it feels like nothing has happened still
>no more randomised missions
>difficulty of some of the missions incredibly disproportionate to where you are storywise despite all of them being set
>artificial difficulty for the most part e.g. 'fight this bandit machop btw it has 500hp'
>neutral attack limited to 5 damage so you're forced to waste PP on the tiniest mons
>a lot of the combat is just you and your partner spamming ranged moves from the other side of the room

Enemies having higher stats stopped me from falling asleep in dungeons
Giving every Pokémon Gap Prober made them actually useful instead of sitting behind you while you do all the work.
Pushing is a great way to keep followers out of monster houses.
Wands are useful if too plentiful
Emeras are good fun and a nice way to the dungeon crawling (RIP Mysteriosity though)
Dungeons being shorter and hunger decreasing faster is also welcome
Neutral attack being nerfed is eh since they give out elixirs like candy on Halloween

Personally though I don't like move leveling. That's the only real thing gameplay-wise I wish stayed go. Other stuff like recruitment and missions don't bother me because I never went beyond 100% in the past games anyway and I only use the main duo but I totally get hating that shit. As far as difficulty goes I think it's good but the difficulty readings the game gives you are less that 100% accurate even if you factor in party composition/stats.

Also the tone of the first half is comfy and I always had a smile on my face because it was cute.

Playing sky, I had a mission that said Arrest Chimecho on Floor B6 in waterfall cave, but floor B6 was one room and chimecho wasn't showing up. A gust of wind swept me out of the dungeon. what did I do wrong?
>>
>>31243485
Was there a message that read something like "You've arrived at the designated floor! ... But where's the target?" If so, nothing. Sometimes the target just doesn't show up.

The gust of wind happens when you stay on a floor for too long. It's based on the amount of steps you take. Switching floors resets the counter.

I've been having this issue recently where on random floors two of my partners (in slots 2 and 3) stop and won't move while my 4th partner follows me. All of their AIs are set to "let's go together" and even if I change the AI it doesn't help. this wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if it wasn't for the fact that if my partner dies I lose items. >Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum
I wrote it

While I enjoyed writing it, there are things I'd do differently if I were to write it now.

I enjoyed writing from Floyd's perspective, since I always wondered why protagonists in PMD fan stuff took to being taken from their homeworld that well. It'd be an absolute horror show for me. I can see him being very divisive though among any readers.
>>
I kinda want a game where we can make our own guild. It'd be cool if its done right.
>>
>>31248187
it makes sense if they don't like their life
or if they lose their memories
>>
>>31248597
Wanted to do the reverse of a tragic backstory. I made Floyd's human life deliberately happy and have him remember most of it, so naturally, he'd be pining to return to the life and the people he knew and loved.
>>
>>31248730
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I just said that both make sense
>>
>>31248187
I thought it was a nice prospective of the mc having a more probable reaction to his predicament.

Personally, I don't try to fill any plotholes in the universe or pre-existing lore without taking into consideration on what other holes may come up as a result. Some holes can be ignored, however, but others are so compelling that somebody is going to fill them even if it causes another, albeit lesser one, to pop up.

But, I guess anybody rewriting Explorers must try to justify why the heck there is a human running around in the shit future. There are going to be several questions evoked from that fact.

>I have no positive recommendations
I definitely didn't hate it, but I am not confident in my tastes, so I don't want to lead anybody into disappointment. Time is valuable and from my perspective, it's best to not know what you're missing (although I'm still barely an adult, so don't take that as solid wisdom). Comics I can give recommendations because I feel more confident in my first impressions, since art can give me an indication on a big chunk of the quality.

Where do you guys get these in such large sizes?
>>
>>31249000
It's fine. I'm mostly glad you actually read it from start to finish, and that you didn't think it was a waste of time

Some of the initial thoughts/problems/things is that it kind of started off more of a 'loving' piss-take of Explorers, but I realised that a lot of the jokes and comedy I had in mind didn't work well in written format, so a lot of the initial zany comedy was scrubbed off.

After that, there was the problem of 'Shit, it's a retelling of Explorers now. Well, got to do something to make it not a waste of time and do something really different with it.' Hence why I started patching in my own lore, making all sorts of alterations and all that jazz. I wanted it to have a different tone to PMD to, again, make it feel less like a retread, and I think Floyd himself was a serviceable vehicle for that with the way he reacted to the events around him.
>>
>>31246781
The only thing I can think of is that their Belly might be empty. Are they carrying items like Munch Belt or Heal Ribbon that deplete your Belly when you go to a new floor?
>>
>>31249560
that is what it was! I googled which I should've done first anyways. I was so stoked for heal ribbons too.
Basically:
>lost all my stuff except my aqua bow
>suddenly, dusknoir takes me to the future
>have no revivers or orans, have to do this dungeon with the luck of finding shit
>get through it on the third try (pikachu/bulbasaur, found energy ball which helped a LOT)
>started building up items so the rest of the game wasn't the worst thing ever
now I'm done with that and I graduate from the guild. Is there any actual postgame or is it just doing random missions? I'm diamond rank and it seems like there's just like lv.1 dungeons
>>
>>31249182
What I find interesting is that you don't have any mystery dungeons in your story. I've always assumed that in the game, mystery dungeons were just gameplay and that in reality you were just progressing through an area not warped by spatial anomalies. Most other fan works have mystery dungeons involved. Doesn't bother me either way.

I've thought about writing a fanfic for the sake of experience, but I don't believe I take criticism well (but maybe not poorly, either). I would write Explorers with some changes which may create minor alterations in the plot. For example, I would give Skunktank from Team Skull a convincing facade by having him use colonge, pretend to be affable, and act like he is Koffing's and Zubat's " defacto parole officer" to reform them (which he obviously doesn't). I would've also written an alternate timeline where the partner failed to get his relic back, joined the guild a day later with a mediocre first impression, which results in him not being a rising star like in the new timeline. The time crisis and the dark future would also feature in that timeline.

If any fanfics had any major changes, the one that would bother me the least would be Super, since Super's pacing is awful and Dark Matter had wasted potential.
>>
>>31250107
I tried to make it feel as non-'gamey' as possible, and the mystery dungeon scrapping was kind of a side effect of this. If it were a Palkia-designated crisis, it might have made sense, given that space is going haywire within then. Couldn't find a way to do them properly, so I just ditched them entirely.

Other non-gamey stuff I did was have Floyd never mention pokemon types or the names of moves (I find characters saying stuff like 'fire is strong vs grass' to be super distracting) which also makes sense since Floyd was never a trainer.

The alternate timeline thing sounds interesting, perhaps throwing in what happened if the protagonist simply ended up appearing in a different part of the world. Farthest he and Grovyle could have gotten would be getting the time gears after all. They'd be locked out of Dialga's world without the time gear. I think it's a good concept to base a story segment on, or even an entire story

Funny you should mention that, since I'm currently doing an extremely loose Super PMD story now (as in a lot looser than TUC was), which takes place 35 years after The Unknown Continuum with a new cast of characters. If you weren't a fan of the more human influence though, then it may be a turn-off as since time as progressed, their societies start to resemble human ones more.

I actually considered Type to be a gameplay thing as well. To me Types are a rule of thumb of what the Pokemon can cope and can't cope with.

The thing about the dark future is that there are questions on why Dusknoir would want to live. My idea would be to change how the time gears worked by making it so that the time gears can be reactivated at any spot and that when the world fell into darkness, only areas where the time gears spun where kept normal. Cutthroat and highly authoritarian civilizations rose up around those gears. There is a plothole on the time gears not spinning when put back, but I'd fix it by having them spin instead of stop and having to force the protagonists try to convince the guild with physical evidence on why Dusknoir is a traitor.
Grovyle was born as Treecko in one of those civilizations as a scavenger, who within the events of the story evolves early on. Dusknoir in this setting was also born (however ghosts are born) as Duskull, but by the story's events he is a Dusknoir, who is both a city leader a preacher of a sprung-up religion who believed that Dialga punished 90% of the world for its depravity. Dusknoir might later on learn the truth, but either way Dusknoir remains loyal to Dialga once Dusknoir actually meets him, since they both share the common desire to not be erased.
The Wigglytuff Guild still lives on, but it is smaller, resides in the Steam Cave, and has been renamed as the Planetary Investigation Team(forgot the name). In the alternate timeline, Wigglytuff found the Steam Cave alone with his unconventional methods and kept Uxie's secret. WIth Uxie's permission, Wigglytuff moved the guildmembers to the Steam Cave discreetly, lamenting the fact that he can't bring any others except maybe a few at most. Grovyle joins the team at some point after he has gained their trust.

Honestly, i think gates gets waaaaay too much hates than it deserves, it had some shitty things like slow ass text and only fifth gen pokemon and only about 10 from other gens, but i would say it's still a pretty good game and the story was good enough for me to want to play more right away just to find what happens next
>>
>>31251142
I applied the types very loosely, and in some cases, flat out ignored them. Example, Floyd uses leaf blade vs a charizard and golem. Charizard scales aren't as hard as golem's rocky body, so it hurts charizard more. Leaf blade is a slashing attack, so I just take the toughness of skin into consideration for the most part

In TUC, I just had Dusknoir be mortally afraid of death to the point that a completely shitty life is preferable to no life at all.

The time gear spinning thing makes sense when compared to the games, as it seemed like they were responsible for keeping time flowing in that area, but it's still not nearly as good as when they were in the tower, where they'd keep time flowing in the entire world.

I remember having ghost types be born too, and went as far as to say they actually had nothing to do with ghosts, mostly because it opens a huge can of worms in regards to the afterlife and stuff that I didn't care to delve into. The whole Dialga preacher thing reminds me loosely of the Neo-Dialga religion I had in the prequel story I made called Scenes From a Memory where Dusknoir and his closest friend, Kirk (Floyd's father) were at odds over what they should do: Follow Primal Dialga, or keep to his old words.

I think I had the Guild fall apart completely in my story, with half of them dead and the other half insane. Your idea sounds pretty good too though, could be worked well.

What's your general plans for the protagonists though? A bland, cookie-cutter protagonist makes me lose interest in any story, so I consider it the most important part.

I would've done the semi-opposite. Charizard would suffer a cut, but that's it. Golem takes the blade and it only makes a dent, but the residual effects would be what hurt the Golem significantly. It makes sense that you would also factor in Defense, which isn't perfect, but it usually gives you a good idea how physically tough a Pokemon is.

I think there are people who fear death more than being doomed to agony. Perhaps I would make Dusknoir somebody who may not necessarily be abusive or hungry for power, but he does like having some amount of power. To expand upon that, I conjured a version of Dusknoir that has a sense of duty towards his city in the dark future, but what might happen is he may realize that his citizens would prefer self-sacrifice and thus he feels like they are no longer loyal to him, one born after the last sunset.

I might be mixing this up with another fic, but in your version, weren't the time gears supposed to be in the tower but were temporarily distributed? It's been a while and I don't see a summary.
But anyway, my reason to why the gears are not in the tower is because the gears were designed to act as a way for life to persist in case if anything catastrophic happens. The gears not only kept time flowing, but also allowed one to create a time gate to travel through time, but the latter is difficult and requires work and tinkering, which thankfully Celebi only needs to work because she knows how the gears function. Normally, taking the time gears away from their areas do nothing, but Temporal Tower's crumbling caused the flow of time to weaken, which was supposed to be a sign that somebody should fix the tower, but that might've gotten lost.

Cont.
>>
>>31259408
My version would be different, as it involves Dusknoir having a crisis of faith with not only Dialga, but also his citizens. Dusknoir in my version is more sympathetic, since unlike in the original, he doesn't kill the protagonists, at least not at first. (I actually have planned out what Dusknoir specifically does to the protagonists, but that's where the twists are).

The guild falling apart would make sense, since I don't remember the time gears doing anything in your or the original version. I'm just thinking about how the guild would cope with the darkness.

The partner I feel confident about. The partner is different from the original in that he is not a wimp, but he is not brave either. He is quite shy and doesn't socialize well, sometimes he says things that he immediately regrets saying. He is also a wily fighter who tries to boggle his enemies into positions where he has the advantage. His attention to detail helps him figure out a way to use the environment to his advantage. However, his emotions weigh on him and those who read them can be successful in predicting his actions and strategies. The partner is bogged down by regret of embarrassing actions, desires to get even with others he doesn't like, and his Impostor Syndrome, which he acquired from working with the human who he looks up to.

The human, on the other hand, I have difficulty with, because I don't know what flaws she should have. I was thinking she would be the explorative, sociable, and friendly type, but she can be easy to trick and doesn't learn efficiently. She is relatively careful, which makes up for her lack of keenness and actually makes her smart in a way by waiting for all the details rather than acting immediately.

Cont.
>>
>>31259408
I usually take it on a species by species basis. I may look at stats here and there, but it's mostly 'Ok, how would and attack like this, from this specific pokemon, hurt that one?' by simply looking at the design. As far as the whole residual thing goes, if Floyd used energy sphere or some less physical attack, it'd hurt the golem more. I more had leaf blade as Floyd's bread and butter in combat too rather than a late game powerful move

That'd be an interesting take on Dusknoir

It initially appeared that they were temporary distributed, but Darkrai was slowly driving him Dialga mad to the point that Dialga thought 'hey, removing the time gears for maintenance is a good idea! (even though it never needed maintenance) I'll get the lake trio to look after them!', and Darkrai appeared in their dreams pretending to be Dialga and asked them to look after them. By the time any of them figured it out, it'd be too late.

Time gears being used for time travel makes a lot of sense. Actually, if I thought of that idea when writing TUC, I might have even used it in order to make them feel less like generic MacGuffins

Admittedly, playing up Dusknoir's cowardly nature in TUC was a but more of a personal appeal thing, since I've always enjoyed villains that you could really despise. This version of Dusknoir is shaping up quite well from the summary though

In TUC, they flat out didn't. Figured it'd really hit home just how terrible things have gotten when you see what the cheerful characters had been reduced to. Aside from the mental aspect, one thing would be food. No sunlight = no growing food (hence why the dark future only took place for several months in Floyd's human life.) Guild and other societies might have to think about resource distribution, unless the time gears allow the sun to function normally in those areas.

I wasn't too happy with my incarnation of the partner. Serge just ended up playing straight-man to Floyd a lot of the time, which, while it functioned well enough and kept Floyd in line and stuff, he could have been way more interesting. With the aspects you've described there, keep them in tact, and you should be fine. Might be good to think about how different he'll be towards the end of the story

I always found it a bit easier to write the human characters. Unless it's vital to the plot, I'd personally scrap total amnesia. Really hard to really get inside the head of someone who can't remember anything at all, at least for me.

As far as the human/protagonist goes, Basil in the sequel, Incarnation, is friendly on the surface, but shrewd and manipulative towards strangers. However, he is an extremely loyal friend if you get past that hurdle. He always likes to think things through, but occasionally lets emotion and impulse get the better of him. He's also a shockingly terrible fighter (how would a human turned pokemon keep up with someone who's had a pokemon body for their entire life anyway?) so he turns to technology to help deal with assailants.
>>
>>31259688
In the dark future, she learns through the pressure of the stakes on how to be clever, and that mercy is a huge gamble. She starts off hesistant to kill, only wounding to fend off attackers, but over time she becomes more brutal and ruthless to the point where she questions her own self-control. She is worried that she will not only become the monsters she fights, but will also enjoy it. She is worried Grovyle might be a bad influence on her, but in the end she ends up helping Grovyle become less vicious so that he doesn't cause preventable bloodshed in the past. Grovyle was her partner because her journey started with him.

As an able-bodied human, she has both psychic abilities and resistance to psychic abilities, the former being underdeveloped thanks to the fact that basic technology (and simply getting off your butt and doing things) is more efficient. Humans are very good liars, which is why humans are so hard to read telepathically, since humans can lie telepathically. This also explains why humans can understand Pokemon emotions and basic communication. She tried using psychic abilities, but never got the hang of it. In the dark future, a teacher helps her by giving her a new perspective on how to perform psychic tricks. She first learns Flash, which becomes the first big hope she gets during her time in the darkness, and later on learns more abilities and expands on her creativity with them. She didn't consider herself to be creative, but through practice, she became a tricky psychic.
While she was able to fight, her fighting was limited to repelling predators, since in her life she was a camper and hiker. She didn't have any martial arts skills. She was taught in the future on how to fight and kill all sorts of enemies, but especially the Sableye, who relished the darkness. She learned to harness "Kiai", or fighting spirit, or aura to enhance her fighting capabilities.

I covered this sort of theme in TUC, but in a slightly different fashion. When shit started to hit the fan, Floyd was determined to stick to his religious code about not killing, but it was soon clear that his boneheaded nature about it was backfiring. Kind of taking a similar sort of path that your character is seeming to take, he eventually goes 'fuck it, the planet needs saved at any cost!' and starts killing almost everyone who gets in his way, even getting a bit of a kick out of it. Might go to show that having a strict moral code was the only thing preventing him from descending into being a killer earlier on. Wanted to throw religious beliefs a bone in the story, since they often get blasted these days. Basil on the other hand goes by cold logic: If you let them live, they'll only come back to try and kill you again, though he definitely doesn't enjoy killing.

The whole psychic thing will need to be carefully introduced and explained in my eyes. I'm fine with such ideas and concepts being thrown in, but there'll probably be people that'll scream 'Mary Sue!' That being said, with everything in fiction, it's how it's done that counts, not what is done. I've seen plenty of stories with bad concepts that ended up working.

As for Floyd, as a human, he just beat them up with a crowbar. Naturally, he often needed to rely on Grovyle and Omar (his other best friend, a human who had absolutely no problem gunning his enemies down with firearms) to do most of the heavy lifting in combat.

Tone wise, how does The Unknown Continuum (and Scenes From a Memory if you've seen that) compare with other PMD fics? Does it feel edgier in anyway? From what I can tell, it feels different in the way that the characters are a fair bit older, and that the main cast out of both stories are exclusively male.

I forgot the partner's backstory, but I was thinking of making the partner somebody who ran away from his hometown after getting in a fight. He went to Treasure Town for employment, since they'll hire anybody, apparently. The Sharpedo Bluff was actually Scizor's adobe, which the partner borrowed a couple of time in the story. Jirachi was actually responsible for influencing him to go there since Jirachi fabricated a flyer that convinced the runaway partner to join the guild instead of aimless wandering.

The human was a close friend to Cresselia, whom she would meet in a grotto in the woods to hear about this parallel universe full of sapient Pokemon. Cresselia planned on taking her there one day to show things off, and gave her the Lunar Wing, which in the story granted her knowledge of the common language there, related Cresselia powers such as regeneration (which includes anything she brought along, such as clothes) and the Dimensional Scream. Cresselia wanted to make sure that she was safe when she goes into the other world, but never intended for the human to follow her without invitation. One day, Cresselia left, leaving her last words being about how she must stop something. The human waited, and waited, until her curiosity got the best of her and she wanted to search for her herself.

There is a plothole with this, since if the human was searching for Cresselia, surely somebody who knew the human in the dark future would be talking about Cresselia in some way. I also remedy time paradoxes by attributing it to Dialga "patching" the paradoxes that come by. Fixing the future would be too big of a paradox to fix and would wipe out Primal Dialga. Merely time traveling would weaken, but not kill Dialga. The human comes back, but she comes back as a human via the Lunar Wing like she did during the alternate timeline, since nothing different happened in her world.

It's unlikely a new PMD will be announced this early. Given that the last 2 PMDs came out towards the end of gen 5 and 6, I wouldn't expect an announcement until at least the end of this year
>>
>>31260282
The whole Dialga patching paradoxes was also a TUC thing too. Makes sense since he's pretty much the god of time. As a rule of thumb, the bigger the paradox, the harder it is to write over. Hence when Floyd and Serge stopped the dead future from happening, it had universal consequences, so anything from that timeline was unsalvageable and thus that timeline died, but a small change in history, such as just killing one guy who'd have no one important as children, would be patched just fine.

It will come up again in Incarnation where they consider going back in time to try and kill 'The Devourer' (heavily tweaked Dark Matter) alongside Mew and 'Tarkus' (Basil in the past life)

You are the only fic that isn't ongoing that I've finished, but I haven't read a lot of stuff. I'm not an innovator.

I prefer characters that are older, but that's probably because I see kids as not physically and emotionally powerful enough to handle heroic burdens. I feel that Floyd is kind of a coward for relying on others to do things he is morally against, and he seems to be unnecessarily brutal. Could be a bad thing from a writing perspective, but I usually rot my brain with edgy memes and immature humor in a good portion of my spare time, so don't value my opinions too much.

The "Mary Sue" thing is what I fear. At first I was worried about how the human would be able to adapt to the darkness, but then I worried that she may be too overpowered with Cresselia's powers. I figured that in her first encounter she would get messed up and would die had she not had regeneration. She wants to be useful, but she couldn't think of how until someone suggested getting teached. She learns to harness her psychic abilities to her own ends by a teacher. If you've seen Prequel Adventure, psychic powers works kinda like coaxing physics to do something else.

Almost all humans are naturally psychic in this setting, but its mostly telepathy, and telepathy on humans, unlike again most Pokemon, is unreliable. Telekinesis does activate in humans, but it activates when in danger and it's actually used to support their physical strength and constitution and heighten their senses. Back when humans were cavemen, they relied on this power quite a bit, but civilization made it less practical. Also keep in mind since telekinesis uses the brain, you're using a lot of energy since the human brain in real life is hungry.

Floyd's moral cowardliness was intentional, and he does get called out on it on a few occasions. While I still regret not making Serge more distinctive and interesting, it still allowed an interesting dynamic where I specifically made the secondary character the more likeable of the two.

Oddly enough, during Scenes From a Memory, I actually did the opposite and toned down the general strength of pokemon instead of giving humans a buff. Figured that humans wouldn't have stood a chance at becoming the dominant species back in the stone age if it weren't for this, so as a result, smashing a typhlosion in the head with a crowbar over and over again is effective if you catch it by surprise.

Sounds like a good way to buff the humans a bit while also keeping them in check. Backstory during the stone age also makes sense and could add good flavour to the story.

I did something strange with Basil as a pokemon. Since I figured he's be absolutely shit at learning how to fight like a conventional meowstic (I'm pretty sure the partner would be much stronger upon first encounter since I'd imagine even simple tasks such as walking would be tricky upon waking up in a new body, let alone fighting), he creates a weapon for himself, kind of inspired by the wands in Super, which he can use to teleport short distances, swap placed with whoever he fires it at, or fire a short range explosion among other things. He's still very much behind the curve when against pokemon who know what they're doing however.

(I am the guy that listed fics)
Ok, so I'm reading your Afterward right now. It seems to make sense to me that a potentially divisive or maybe even an unlikable character is usually better than a bland and boring one. I've heard of stories that were marred by a boring protagonist, but on the other hand I become more negative if a protagonist is insufferable or is a "author's pet". While I'm not a writer, I do like to think up characters as a group rather than creating them individually in a vacuum.

I write off the "naked" by having it be that the mind of the human becomes affected by being a Pokemon. Both instincts and muscular intuition make the initial experience not awkward.

I'm going to take the spoilers off for a second. I may not be confident in my tastes, but I'd be willing to say non-anonymously that TUC (The Unknown Continuum) is something that can be appreciated, at least by PMD fans.
I would say give it a go because it's a twist on an existing story that is not terrible. I don't know where would be the best place to stop at to evaluate first impressions, but I read through it and gained something positive as far as perspective and inspiration. I'd say it's alright and have no regrets reading it.

I don't know if you want to put spoilers on for this, but if you had to write a scenario for a PMD game (ie: E rated, player and partner can't permanently "die", must work with gameplay and roleplaying), what would you do? I'd recommend not using spoilers unless the part of the plot you're posting would spoil.
>>
>>31270045
In a way, it's like Rey and Jyn from the new Star Wars films. Rey was a bit of a Mary Sue who had the plot hand things to her on a silver platter, but I could at least say THAT about her. Couldn't tell you a thing about Jyn.

As for the whole characters as a group thing, this is why I felt I could take a few more risks with Floyd. While Segre could have been more interesting, he functioned well as someone who, when Floyd's dickishness went a bit far, would be great to cheer for when he calls him out on his shit. At worst, they're an asshole and bland respectively, but I think they make each other better characters, hence why I don't have any huge regrets over them.

I was considering that initially, but then I thought 'Nah, Floyd's such a drama queen that he'd make a huge fuss regardless.' Even then, if he felt as though his mind was being affected by his body, he'd start freaking out horribly. Either way, it ends with him making a makeshift loincloth, and the story just ends up feeling a bit uncomfortable from there on out.

I still think my biggest mistake was making it too similar to Explorers. I diverted here and there, changed and added things, but I think I could have went further. If you're interested, this is the sequel I'm working on, very loosely based on Super https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12057059/1/Pokemon-Incarnation I do think it's better than TUC so far, but if you thought TUC was just ok, then it likely won't blow you away.

Hard to say, but for starters, I'd ditch the partner and move to more of a small ensemble cast of about four-five characters. I'd also make humans considerably more prominent in the story, since it was something I think they should have done in Gates with the direction the story was heading. It'd be real interesting to meet someone else who was summoned or found themselves in the Pokemon world, and how they adapted. Maybe one of them could be a bastard and ends up being a villain.
>>
>>31270346
I'll bookmark your sequel. I wouldn't blame you if you took the scenario off-the-rails, frankly, since I think that a group of kids in minor adventures plot is very difficult to transition to trying to defeat wickedness itself manifesting and mindfucking everyone and also wants destroy the world.

I think Chun should try to take a break from certain tropes or put a spin on them.
Player Disappearance:
(A) You don't go away at all. S'cool.
(B) The epilogue involves trying to prevent you from your inevitable departure.
(C) You are forced into a situation where you either sacrifice yourself, or don't and "die" anyways along with whatever was in danger. The "death" in this case could be you becoming stranded in an area being inside a collapsing area (such as a cave or dimension). You then spend the next one or two chapters playing both characters separate, in which your partner is trying to find a way to rescue you while you end up discovering something that becomes relative to the plot.
(D) You don't depart, but another human does and you have to say goodbye to him/her. Bonus points if that human has crimes that he or she wants to atone for. The story could also have it so that he or she has some sort of way to come back by some sort of deal with a (benevolent) legendary, since that human probably is very helpful in the MD world as well.

Speaking of which, I think it could be possible to flesh out a human character by having a second human character, but Lillie in SM was divisive since she also hogged the story focus from your character.

I'll be back later.

General synopsis is this:
Humans are mysteriously vanishing from the human world, top level trainers in particular
Basil's sister vanishes and Basil later finds himself in the pokemon world and naturally wants to find her
Partner (Murphy) is almost out of school by the time he meets Basil. Not much time is spent in Serenity (about 6 chapters at the most)

A) Might have to do something else if you want an emotional finale. An emotional finale is not needed per se, but many people would sorely miss it
B) Would be extremely jarring for some players (such as myself) to try so hard to stay. The backlash against this sort of thing was the birth of TUC.
C) I really like this actually. I like moments where the player and partner are seperated since it's A: Dramatic (being isolated when Munna's cult are hunting you down was pretty tight) and B: Anything to get a break from the partner
D) That boils down to how much the player cares about the other character. One of the many reasons why Super's ending was such a spectacular failure for me was because I just never grew to like the partner, so when he 'died', I didn't really care.

Super and the partner was a much bigger issue. Not only was he essentially the main character, but he was the ONLY main character. Player's role was pushed back so far that he barely even had a reason to exist in the story.

(A) There could be an alternative to the conventional finale that is also emotional.

(C) Isolation is one of my favorite things of the PMD series, whether it be fugitives, expedition, abduction, or being stranded. Really gives me wandering vibes! Being forced to leave that world in an unconventional and unplanned way evokes the emotion of sudden loss in the partner instead of a moment of farewell. If there is a "death", the "death" could be a misobservation and what actually happened is that you now wander some weird area ("the void", Ultra Space, the place where you sealed the BBEG). Your partner gets out of his/her depression when he or she finds evidence that you may not be gone after all.
(D) [triumphant music playing]

There's also another thing: Betrayal and Antagonists (you can mix and match these ideas)
(A) The "traitor" was a former member of the antagonist's group, but defected. His/her past catches up and you become entangled in it.
(B) The traitor becomes hesitant to betray you either because of an ultimatum or the traitor has second thoughts and call things off (though things may already be set in motion).
(C) The partner is the traitor, but is also (A) or (B), so no backstabbing.
(D) You are in the PMD world because the antagonists invited you in for their own means.
(E) The antagonists are extremists who think their insane actions are for the "greater good" (ex: destroying free will, world domination, extermination of certain species or civilizations, awakening a legendary they have misconceptions of, etc.)
(F) A group of lesser antagonists (such as outlaws) decides to help you fight against a greater menace. I like it when stories show degrees of good and evil.

A nice chunk of process has been made, but even if we did get to the point of being able to make a complete rom hack, a spriter is gonna be hard to come by, especially for things like BGs (portrait anon can't sprite BGs unfortunately). There's also custom music to consider (I think they're still working on the conversion format for it too)

Overworld sprites would be much more work i think - given the amount of pokemon that came out since sky.

We know R-A-D ain't dead, but things have slowed down thanks to real life.
Victory Fire updates every three days, which I consider to be quite impressive.
Tales of Elysium updates every Tuesday and Saturday, so every 3-4 days.
Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum was not bad at all, and I don't regret reading it, but I didn't recommend it because even when I'm anonymous I worry that I cannot defend my tastes. Popular stuff is easier to admit to since I can appeal to popularity.
I don't know how often Silver Resistance updates, since I'm on Chapter 33. Would not recommend reading the author's comments because of spoilers.
If you liked Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum, then you'll probably like PMD: Overthrown, since it's also dark and brutal.

Thing is I do not care for shipping, but I don't mind romance as long as it's peripheral (Tales of Elysium).
>>31271801
Thing is I wonder how a human would react if he or she had romantic interests in another Pokemon or vice versa. Would the human still be human and not be into Pokemon, or would the Pokemon body have some effects that make him or her say "for some reason I have a crush on that"?

>We know R-A-D ain't dead, but things have slowed down thanks to real life.
Yeah, I just hope it doesn't become a DeadFic. Happens often when authors get distracted by life.
>I don't know how often Silver Resistance updates
Once or twice a month. Just make sure you don't read "part X" chapters until they're complete, unless you want to end on a cliffhanger. As for the story, it takes a dip around halfway, while climbing temporal tower, but picks up later again. It stays overall good for the biggest part of the story. Definitely worth keeping up with.
>Thing is I do not care for shipping, but I don't mind romance as long as it's peripheral (Tales of Elysium).
Are you me? I didn't even notice they were a gay couple until I saw it mentioned in the comments.

I can't remember the name of the fic (it was bad), but there was one where the mc gradually fell in love with a natural pokemon. He at first rejected the idea, due to interspecies shenanigans, but later accepted his feelings. Mary sue happened and they both turned human, but that's not really the point. I think it explained it it well enough: I think it's a transition from "I'm human so it's weird" to "I'm a pokemon now so it's not weird".

Added my sprite randomization algorithm to my earlier dungeon generation github repository. There are a few changes I want to make for readability and that sort of thing but I didn't bother for now, so there are some different conventions between the randomizer and the dungeon algorithm. Haven't tested it either but it should still work unless I fucked something up copying it over

Did make it so the algorithm takes in a seed as an argument, which will make it possible to create the same sprite twice if you just save the seed. That way when you recruit a Pokemon or something, the seed of its random sprite is all you need to store to keep recreating it

As a partner? Hell no, Run Away ruins it.
As a leader? It's okay, but you're more or less forced to evolve it postgame, which sucks if you dont want to evolve

I bookmarked that guy's other fic (he made "Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum", and has also made "Pokemon Incarnation"). I was thinking of starting it, but I haven't read SR in a while. I want to get to the Temporal Tower part. I haven't read your spoiler, but is that where I have to worry about the slump?

The two guys in ToE for all we know could just be friends, or friends who are gay. Them being a couple is probably implied.

I don't mind romance as long as it doesn't take over too much of the story, like in ToE's case so far. I don't get much out of it, whether straight or gay, even though I'm hetero.
Loss or absence of a loved one can work for me, however, since I can empathize with it.

So /pmdg/, what do you like most about the series as a whole?

I like that i've found many new favorites just through the games.
>>
>>31299778
I like the feel of 'em. Upbeat and adventure until it's not, and when it's not, it's really really not. I've tried to play other games like that and I can't really feel the same drive, so maybe it's just a combination effect that all bleeds together.

Also lore

Characterization and story, which makes me like replaying over and over again, and enjoy a mon more.

I think it's fine unevolved. Doesn't need coverage thanks to Adapatability, so the only thing is missing is a ranged attack that isn't Shadow Ball, which isn't worth giving up your precious animations and unevolved cute factor for.

>>31299778
I rather like the games' world. Seems like it'd be a comfortable and enjoyable place to live when it isn't on the brink of ending.
The gameplay is also a lot of fun, especially with all the improvements Super made. Pokémon mechanics translate to dungeon crawling very well.

Would it be possible to give your player character more agency in PMD game? What I mean is not only having more dialogue choices, but those choices have effects later on in the story. I doesn't have to affect gameplay.

I know that having the game process all of your decisions and having to give you something relatively unique is problematic for the developers, but what if it was just:
>In Chapter 3, you chose choice A, which results in result A in Chapter 3 and later Chapter 5.
>In Chapter 3, you chose choice B, which results in result B in Chapter 3 and later Chapter 5.
>Your choice may be mentioned later on in a later chapter, but nothing beyond that.

I know that story flowcharts are not easy, and I also know that things have to be railroaded.

I would like if the partner didn't talk for me. It would be nice if you could trigger/avoid some battles.
>>
>>31302506
As much as I would like gameplay and story integration, I think we should be realistic and start off with just improving story and interaction.
Boss battles are kind of like milestones in the story, so avoiding them would be like going around the hurdle.
However, I would still like interaction with the boss pre-battle so that you can get some reaction out of the boss. Perhaps have a save point right before the boss so that you can test out all the options without having to start over anywhere.
>>
>>31302718
Maybe they interactions could affect the difficulty. Like, you can piss the Boss off or try to sweet talking into not going all out.

>>
>>31303646
I'd rather have the option to toggle difficulty in some way. For example, if a story dungeon is too tough, I want to be able to drop it down a peg so I can advance. In that example, I could also "git gud", but maybe with my team combination and that particular dungeon I am at a great disadvantage.

>>31302791
>>31303309
>>31303078
That could actually work! I want the options to be in a consistent order, though, so that players can know what to choose to get their ideal difficulty.

I was also thinking what if the game gave you a "second partner" that becomes a part of your team. Unlike your actual partner, he or she only comes along in some of your story missions.
At some point in the game, you get a choice between three Pokemon that may be related to each other in some way (legendary trio, characters that are a part of different factions, a group that volunteers to assist a travel, etc).
It could be a way to give secondary characters a way to be fleshed out and do things with you. Also a "second partner" would be doing something that GtI did right.

Have you tried vgresource? Alternatively, you could try to rip them yourself, the format is known and there are like two programs to convert it

>>
>>31316266
You should definitely give Super a try if you're interested. It made some improvements to the AI and mechanics which make the gameplay better and more challenging, and overall it's a pretty fun time. There's a strong consensus here that it's the better of the 3D PMDs.

Play Gates if you particularly like the games' stories, but it's a bit lacking in Pokémon selection and content. It's got some nice unique features like paradise and mysteriosity going for it, though.

Gates to infinity pros
>pretty good story
>Fun cinematics
>Base building
>Hunger removed
>V-Wave is awesome if it match your type
>Has DLC dungeons
Gates to infinity cons
>Flawed gameplay
>Only pokemon from gen V and about less than 10 pokemon from other gens
>V-Wave is a fucking pain if it match with the most common type for the pokemon in that dungeon
>somewhat short, about 27 hours for the whole story
>Has little to no postgame content
>Can take only one mission at a time
>Rare material for upgrading buildings to level 2 are late game rewards
>Only 5 pokemon avaible for MC and partner

Super mystery dungeon pros
>Pretty good gameplay
>pretty challenging
>good amount of content
>Has ALL of the pokemon

Super mystery dungeon cons
>Poorly paced story with unoriginal villain
>Limited amount of missions
>Feels very short
>Hunger is back
>Only starters, Riolu and pikachu selectable for MC and partner

>Romance in PMD fics between former humans and natives
In The Unknown Continuum and Incarnation, I put in a couple of gags highlighting how ridiculous it was at best, and outright revolting at worst.

A Lopunny uses attract on Floyd to try and lure him away and mug him, but it does absolutely nothing. Cue Corphish accusing him of being gay.
Incarnation has Basil actually take advantage of this. A braixen seemed to have the hots for him, and while he was revolted at the idea, he plays into it by leading her on for a bit to convince her to make him a braixen wand which he later modified into a weapon so he can protect himself. A pretty uncomfortable scene for me to write (managed to be more horror for me than any of the dead future stuff in TUC), but probably the most memorable scene so far.

>Super mystery dungeon cons
You forgot to mention that your partner is obnoxious as hell. Seriously, in the other games you and him/her were best friends that complemented each others qualities while also acting as a foil to your respective flaws but in Super they're just an immature piece of shit. It was intentional too, the other characters fucking hate them.
>>
>>31301006
Loosely related, but one thing I really hated about Super's PC (aside from being almost useless to the story in spite of having the most screen time) was that he felt too defined to be a good player stand-in.

Example, if you select the option to tell the partner that he's not annoying, he tells him anyway. In the epilogue He was flat out willing to risk Dark Matter coming back just to see him again, potentially endangering the entire planet that they worked so hard to save (sure, there was no actual risk, but the PC didn't know that.) Pretty much makes him the most villainous pokemon in that game.
>>

For Super.

>>
>>31317532
I think it made the part where it feels hurt by you much more effective, and the part where you're going to the mines is pretty funny, but yeah, it's very hit or miss, but after you leave the town it goes back to being just a regular PMD partner.

I think that hunger is necessary for increase challenge in resource management. However, I've never played Gates, so I don't know if I would miss hunger.

Limited amount of missions is a drawback, but that drawback is made up by the fact that you can now "catch 'em all". Completionism is more rewarding here.
>>
>>31317563
Really? I chose the option to admit that I find the partner annoying. I figured the partner would accuse you of lying if you said you didn't find him or her annoying, even though your character may be telling the truth.

>>31317476
Regardless of that, what I wonder is how much does the body affect the mind? I know that humans become Pokemon that have mental natures similar to that human's personality, but I wonder what canon says about how you first feel in your body. My theory is that your body adapts your mind a little to your new body, which is why you don't notice at first that you are a Pokemon despite sometimes being on four legs. Or that could just be you being half awake and not being fully aware.

I also wonder if your humanity leaks in, since memory wipe doesn't affect base behavior and personality. I would think that humans are highly resourceful, charismatic, adaptable, and are less bound by common sense (which is overrated in math and science anyways). You can't really translate that to a roleplaying game, though.
>>
>>31317984
Only really had much of an effect in the level 1 dungeons though. Other than that, it was 'just bring a few apples' and Bob's your uncle.
>>
>>31318390
If you select 'no' he just says 'you're not annoying, but you're annoying.' Something along those lines.

I'd imagine it does to an extent. It'd explain why the player character ends up being equally as competent as the partner at the start of the game. Take that out of the equation, then the player should be about level negative 7 at the start since he'd probably struggle to walk, especially if it's a four legged pokemon.
