If I had to choose between fucking Serena and Mallow, I'd choose Mallow.

Serena just can't compete at anything. Can't battle, perform, raise Pokemon or get the MC's dick. She isn't even particularly hot, and even looked like an ugly tomboy in XYZ22.

From browsing most anime discussion sites, the general consensus on Serena seems to be that she's the worst female lead yet.

The only thing people thought was interesting about Serena was the crush, and that in itself was just a tiny little subplot lasting a few seconds every 10th episode or so.

*Alan was always meant to be part of the main series. The reason the four Mega specials were made was because it would be difficult to set up his backstory and development in the series itself, so he came up with the idea of giving him his own episodes that could show this. The idea to give them a mega evolution theme came later.
*Also, Alan is meant to be an "Anakin Skywalker-type character", someone who turns to the dark side to protect those he loves.
*Satoshi's XY design was primarily Yajima's, and the idea for his sideburns were taken from "a character from the video games named Red, which Satoshi is based on".

Why do you all enjoy watching an anime that's obviously aimed at very young kids?

The games are primarily aimed at children but there are things thrown in for adults, like the Gen I pandering and such. The anime has nothing like that. The writing is terrible, the battles make no logical sense since they don't use any battle mechanics from the game, and some episodes even shoehorn in morals.
