So I've caught up with SM and here's what I've noticed

Ash hasn't really been reset. Sure he acts like a real kid but so did Ash when he first arrived in Kalos. He and Pikachu can still kick ass, even if Rowlet is kind of useless and not very strong.

What does bother me, is that the first few episodes aren't going anywhere. We get introduction episodes from (almost) each classmate, but Ash hasn't done a whole lot. He hasn't caught any other Pokémon and his Rowlet is still useless. I'm sure that'll change after the Hala episode(s) and I hope the series gets a little faster paced.

I like Ash's classmates, especially Lillie and Mallow. The only one I can't stand is Sophocles, he's literally just Max with Clemont's talents. I hope he won't have too many episodes.

The alola league was also different in the games considering it didn't have an actual champion and was built by Kukui. Things can be different in the anime but it doesn't need to follow the same rules as stablished ones on its first year, but that's only if there is a league in the anime and not an anime original tournament.

I don't want Serena to return just for nothing to happen with her which is what I fear SM would do to her since it isn't anywhere near as serious as XY was.

She's no longer at that stage anymore. They can still use her feelings for a joke like Millifeui teasing Serena, but they would need to take it just as serious considering Ash and Serena's final moment together was a pretty obvious confession.

Ash will need to respond to her parting words and address her feelings seriously, in the SM tone and style it would lose impact very easily if they decided to play for laughs.

The only way I could see it working in SM is if its played for laughs at the start of Serena's cameo but it gradually grows more serious to the point where they have to talk about it. The best way they could handle it is to recreate their goodbye, but this time with Ash taking the initiative and being like, "I'm not ready to properly respond to your feelings, but the next time we meet I'll be more mature and strong enough to tell you my real feelings."

That way it builds up for Serena's appearance 20 years from now or when they decide to go endgame with Ash and they can properly give him closure with Serena.
