It's lazily put together. While I don't like comparing pervious seasons and incarnations of a show to others, it definitely is a step back from XY. I can't understand how people are saying the game is great and beyond expectations. I was ready to give up within a few hours because of how absolutely draining and lifeless the pacing and gameplay (or lack thereof) was. I felt like I was doing a chore instead of sitting down for a fun time of training and battling. I had to force myself through the first island, which I had to only assume was a vastly drawn out and overly long tutorial, only to find out that it basically follows you through the entire game.

May I ask why so many Gen 7 pokemon had fucking awful designs?

Another thing, why are the routes so empty? Even the routes that have a good number of people on them, only 2-3 of them will actually battle you. The other routes have maybe at max 4 trainers along the entire stretch.

The game fills empty and barren, like it's using tutorials and cutscenes to fill in the gaps and hope you don't see past them.

Yes, there were some bad designs, but A LOT of pokemon in that picture have good designs

The Incineroar line is pretty bad, but there is no way anyone can say the Rowlet and Popplio lines are designed bad, they're desgined really damn well

Biggest issues I had with the cutscenes is that your character was basically a mannequin. Everyone else would display different emotions relevant to what is happening or in relevance to their dialog (even if there were a very very limited set of emotions characters had and their delivery was practically as turn-based as the battles themselves), but your character NEVER has any expression other than a blank smile and just stand still throughout the entire thing. Even if you choose to deliver a snide, mean, sarcastic, or even boastful remark, his expression never changes.

You can literally be in a "save the world" fight, even boast to your enemy that you won't lose...... and he will still be just standing straight with a smile on his face.

Some people might argue that he/she is a mute protagonist that is supposed to be "you", kinda like Link never talks though you can pick dialog for him in some games... but even Link showed expressions on his own when relevant, you can never change your character's expression ever, even yourself, not even the dialog responses you can pick change their expression. About the most your character ever does is close their eyes, their face might as well be painted on.

You can argue "It's for kids" all you want, but plenty to near all "for kids" games with a mute protagonist still have them show expressions if the system was capable of it, it really takes you out of trying to drum up something dangerious is happening when a dozen people all around you are looking worried or angry and fidgeting around.... and you are just standing there... motionless.... arms at your sides... just smiling. If they wanted to make it more "cinematic", then the main character has to actually act in the cutscenes.

Yup... hand holding, casualization, and nonstop unskippable cutscenes. It never ends. The routes are just long lines. It's as if they realized that all kids did was go to a route, fight trainers, go to cities, do nothing, and then continue... so they designed their game like that, too. It's weird. It's just a big, long line (or seems like one) and the cutscenes don't end. Nothing even happens. It's all just reading.
Also, asking you questions which require direct input but where the answer you give does not matter or impact what follows at all.

Currently 8 hours in, just beat the 3rd trial and it doesn't feel much better. Of course I've been item hunting and battling every trainer I can find, so you might be faster than me. There's really not a lot to do. Trainers are few and far between, and most routes are blocked off entirely until you watch 15 cutscenes and beat the trial.

These games were one of the most strangely paced in the series, imo. At the start, the game is a total slog, with you wanting it to be over moments into playing it. But after the postgame looker missions are completed, all the legendaries and UBs caught, I found myself wanting more.

I enjoyed the bounty-hunting aspect that was present both here and in ORAS Mirage Legendaries subquest, and I wish there was more of it to go through.
