The reason there are custom types like wood and gas, is because pokemon brown(which prism is a sequel to.) had those types. Also there is a move called Mustard gas

Having played the game for hundreds of hours as a beta tester. I'll tell you to not worry about things like catching em all and mining early.

There's also a Bingo event that requires you to complete a ton of difficult achievements in order to activate a legendary.

You should probably just wait until you get to the Elite 4 and can grind money easily before going for the catch em all stuff.
