How did they get away with that episode?

Let's recap: Ash and Lillie will be told to raise an egg. They decide that over night it should stay with Lillie, but she's afraid of being alone with the pokémon egg and doesn't know what to do if it hatches, so she asks Ash to COME STAY AT HER MANSION OVER NIGHT to provide her company and comfort while they work together to incubate the egg properly.

Then in the morning after Ash also gets to battle Lillie's butler.

I actually prefer the SM romance to the XY one.
Think about it. XY was really forced. Literally: "Here's Serena. She loves Ash."
And that was it. Right from the getgo they just retconned Ash's past to include some bit about Serena to give her a raison d'être.

With Lillie it's different. It'll be the more interesting type of romance. The type that develops over time.
From being a shy noble girl that can't even touch pokémon to being a strong trainer herself that'll have the courage to stand tall and face her own evil mother to save pokémon, she'll really undergo some changes.

And all of that with Ash at her side. He'll be there to protect her, comfort her and enable her to grow as a person and trainer.

Naturally when two people like these spend so much time together (which they will once they start traveling and she gets her ponytail[another symbol of her undergoing changes and progressing]) it's only to be expected that some feelings arise. Lillie will definitely fall for Ash and see him in a romantic way as well. They'll bond and grow so much closer.

And I find this to be a really intriguing romance, one I'm hyped for.

What if M20 is set an alternate universe ?
I mean, the hat is different. I'm thinking the movie will feature a different Ash with a similar journey, and some differences. And then we will find out that alternate Ash is the one we've been following during SM.

I personally liked Serena's love story (I'm a sucker for childhood friend stuff) and while I don't think it was forced, I recognize it was handled badly. I expected a bit more memories of the past and those kind of things...

About Lillie though, I don't think the writers will go the same route as in the game. I would love to see Lillie grow and develop feelings but this is sadly too much screen time eating. But hey, we can dream all right !
