he creators know what the fans want when it comes to this, which outside of nostalgia and advertising possible games would almost certainly be the primary reason why she would possibly return in the first place. If she were to return for example, they would probably retcon some shipping hints into this movie under the guise of happening off-screen in the original episode(s) or something, and continue on when she was brought back.

I'd rather see her and Brock and Gary all returns because I like their characters significantly more than most of his other companions and feel particularly her and Brock have room to grow as characters, but it's obvious that regardless of their subjective quality, they would return entirely because they are more popular than any of the friends/rivals that came afterwards, just like most other things related to gen 1 which is why this movie and all gen 1 pandering since the dawn of the franchise has happened in the first place. Likewise, they would probably go with the Misty ship over Serena's not because of subjective metrics like which one was "better" or who showed more for who, but because your average person might not know who the hell Serena is as opposed to Misty because the show hasn't been culturally relevant since the early 2000s.

So if she were to return, how amourshipping played out would make sense in hindsight because the main reason they'd bring back Misty on a permanent basis would be fairly obvious, just like if they were to ever bring Serena back. If she doesn't, well then they clearly just did it to give her character something to do through XY with no intentions of closing out on it or anything else which before today was my underlying assumption and could possibly again be if this leads to nothing which is completely possible.

I’m just saying - despite my own reservations as much as anyone else’s - that if the 2017 movie is supposed to be a “retelling” of the start of Ash’s journey (and that seems to be the one thing we know of for sure at this point), then we have to remember that Ash was unlikely to survive his first day away from home without a certain redhead sitting riverside with her fishing pole in the water, waiting to catch a bite.

If this is a “retelling”, then that redhead will be there, waiting to save this stupid kid’s life after he nearly got himself (and more importantly, his Pikachu) drowned for no good reason.

If this is a “retelling”, then be sure that Ash would not be able to survive without Misty, which has been proven at least twice in canon.

So Misty had better be in the movie.

What are the chances instead of being an OS movie, the movie actually changes every 20 minutes or so to show all the different gens of the anime, celebrating the show as a whole? Basically a montage of the entire series?

Aside from Kaori I'm pretty sure they can get back all the old main voice actors given how popular they all are. If they have to recast May I'm sure they'd do that if it came down to it.

It's too late to do that, If Ash had won in X&Y it would be allowed but writing him as a failure and then sending him to an island with no pokemon league and then releasing a movie showing all of Ash's greatest hits leading up to his giant fail of a loss instead of leading to his win. Dude Digimon had way more than 6 and almost double that when season 2 came around. I am pretty sure pokemon can do it too with some math tricks. For instance digimon focused on pairs (Matt/Tai, Kari/TK, TK/Matt, etc). Pokemon can do the same with Ash getting to know everybody personally, then everybody getting along with everybody else.
