Why is everyone assuming this is going to be the only nostalgia pandering movie? They could make like the first Evangelion movies, with the first movie being a retelling of the TV show and the second movie being a completely new story.

I honestly expect M21 to be a continuation of M20 and have Mew with its Z-crystal being distributed. Especially because 2018 is the 20th anniversary of the 1st movie.

I can genuinely see Ash recounting his journey to z-powered Lillie when she finally came over to Kantos like she promised she did within the game. But that would assume the anime would follow the game plot and assume everyone who is watching it has played the game.

2nd: movie is done in the original vision of Takeshi Shudo where he wrote in his book about his ideas for the show.
