I did too, but I have to admit it was silly how it was handled. He was serious and competent in XY, and part of that seemed like it was because he was actually experienced. Like, he was growing, and he was genuinely becoming a better trainer instead of progress wipe.

But the fact he hadn't aged at all, and was still a ten year old was very inconsistent with this notion of all the experience he's gained.

I have high hopes that though they kind of soft reset his character, they will use that as a way to give him a gradual experience curve, rather than zero to hero like from prior to XY.

I just have a different feeling from this generation overall. That it'll switch things up in a major way. The games put the usual undertone of 'learning how to grow and form one's identity' right in the spotlight, and with varying degrees of success displayed the progression of various characters as they grow up.

That's what the island trials are all about. Rather than a sport, like the pokemon gym/league system, it's meant as a journey of the self. The fact that for the anime they are wiping the slate clean almost, and putting ash in the school setting, as well as showing all of his incompetencies as a child explicitly make me think there might be some kind of direction this is being taken in.

XY Ash had already grown, so arguably, it's easier to tell the story of growing up, or of learning when you're given someone already immature.

Funny how the eg episode that sounds shippy doesn't get the same amount of discussion amour episodes got
