I think it's extremely boring right now. Ash mentions taking the trial challenges and then basically nothing has come from it. Nearly every episode so far has felt like a filler plot but without even a structure leading towards progress to justify it.

My biggest complaint starting off was that ash had no emotions and came off as too confident, I'm so happy they fixed it.

They more the show tries to be funny the less funny it is, it comes off as a cheap attempt at slapstick with ugly visuals and smooth animation that will never be used in a notable way. The game is extremely small and short with almost no post game battles and the same battle shit from the past 2 games with out the ability to even gain exp from it.

Anyone feel there are too many main pokemon girls now? Its gotten to the point where its hard to express interest in all of them when there's so many. The fandom is also more divided now because we're literally at 7+ female leads now over 20 years.

I'm gonna type a lot here because I want to actually discuss the anime.

I think the reason I liked this group the best was because you really got the sense that they cared about and supported each other. Not just in the generic "gotta root for my friends" sense of things, but that their friendship felt like a legitimate push to better each other. There's a really great almost subtle Serena and Ash dynamic where you could tell their talks about giving advice and thinking about their goals allowed them to connect on a fairly deep level, starting with Serena inspiring Ash at the first gym and culminating at the final gym's climax with the last 3 episodes being a nice resolution/pay-off to it. It's probably my favorite character relationship in the show next to Ash's dynamics with Brock and Dawn.

Citron and Ash had a really nice brotherly relationship where they both were very impressed with each other. Ash is constantly captivated by Citron's scientific achivements while Citron finds inspiration in Ash's attitude and battling style. While this one is a little underdeveloped in the sense that you get the impression Citron gets a lot more out of the relationship than Ash, it's still a fun dynamic to have.

Eureka is a fun character in that she's naive but also snarky, so she bounces off all three of the others very well, from teasing her brother, a little sister to Serena/secret AshxSerena supporter, and admiring Ash and his trainer lifestyle. That last scene with Dedenne at the airport perfectly summarizes her: she wants to be like everyone in the group, but she also wants to surpass them, and that admiration and ambition is what makes her endearing.

Overall though I just liked that they weren't mean-spirited to each other like a Misty or Iris, or had dumb arguments for no reason like even May and Dawn occasionally fell into. They felt like friends who loved and respected each other and were kind of "above" petty stuff.

Assuming this isn't pasta, I agree for the most part. Although I still think Ash and the female lead having occasional arguments is good and entertaining.

The few times Ash did argue with May and Dawn I always found funny and entertaining, even the old Kanto ones with Misty. Obviously seeing that constantly gets old, but it goes to prove not every girl thinks Ash is a knight in shining armor. I liked how May and Dawn called Ash out on his nonsense sometimes.

To a lesser extent XY Ash was a lot more mature than the other Ash's in general, so Serena saw Ash at his best. AG Ash would have lost his patience with her similar to the way he did with May. Back then he didn't even want to travel to Contests that were in a different direction of the next Gym.

Reading this, it makes me sad that we will not see something like xyz ash and the dynamics of a group like this for a long time. Maybe they surprise us and ash hunkers down to take down the trials and has that relationship with this group but I doubt it.

I liked XY a lot but I think it's fucking stupid to expect that the SM crew be just as fleshed out by episode 5.

I don't agree because I didn't "feel" that way either. The strongest impression I had of Clemont and Bonnie five episodes in was that they were a collection of running gags. That didn't start to change for me till they got actual focus.

"Feelings" are pretty hard to argue for objectively.

We've already learned a fair bit about Lana, meanwhile, and Kiawe has set up for a decent dynamic for Ash, so there's a solid foundation with the SM cast.

I said "goal of her own", that didn't revolve around a different member of the main cast. It also took just as long for Fennekin to stand out in any way, as she's just kind of there until that time she botches the performance. That's a whole third of the show.

Yeah, plus in the first minute of XY01 we immediately learned something about her personality and relationship with her mother. It was interesting. The writers used the Yayakoma scene to show and not tell. The only character in SM where we've gotten that kind of "show, don't tell" characterization is Kaki with the Z-Ring stuff. Lana's episode was nice, but it relied too heavily on flashback/monologue instead of letting events drive her characterization.

The flashback episode was fine since it wasn't just Clemont talking the whole time. It was as if we were there in the current moment.

Lana's flashback was fine and all, I'm not saying it was bad. There was certainly some element of exposition there, albeit a generic "rescue a Pokemon from local assholes" story that doesn't really give us much insight into her personality except that she was a Good Samaritan.

The stuff where she tells us her dream, though, is just a boring "hey, my dream is blah, I really want to do it because I like it." A bit underwhelming.

What events? Half the episode is spent dawdling around on the beach and with her sisters. It just gives us more of what we already knew about her anyways: personality quirks.

The events in question are watching the gang fail at fishing, and then Team Rocket doing their usual shit. Lana's role in beating TR notwithstanding, it's generic as hell, like XY filler levels of generic.

Lana is a main cast member, so the standard for her is higher. I found the Lana episode to be boring, and near the end it just became too predictable with the Rockets.

Those flashbacks in XY were usually a LOT more compelling/gripping (summer camp, anyone? pre-victory flashback in XY80?) and were used to augment episodes that had a lot of interesting stuff going on in them.

In Suiren's case her flashback pretty much was the only interesting part of the episode. Except for maybe the Bewear scene and Suiren getting teased by her sisters, which provided humor but little else. You can't carry an episode on a flashback.

I think I'm allowed to criticize a good writer when he writes an occasional flop of an episode. I like Omode as a writer, for instance, but I criticized a lot of her episodes during XY, especially that boring Meowstic brothers episode.

Stuff that really built up a relationship between two characters and that comes up later in the series. Not the same shit by any means. Satoshi follows Suiren around and just kind of...watches her do stuff and listens to her story. And then they all go fishing because...they just do. The Rhyhorn race episode was also a natural extension of Serena's tension with her mother, a subplot that we know at the time will matter.

With Suiren, we learn some more about her, such as the fact that she's good at fishing and has two cute sisters. That's nice and all, but again, outside of the flashback (the main source of fuel for future development of Suiren), nothing that is particularly compelling or that really gives her a much closer bond with any of the other cast members, except MAYBE her Ashimari.

Gee, I wonder why she barely said much? Could it be because she's shy/meek? Even when she did speak up, she was brief and hushed.
