After watching XY&Z45 with subs and knowing how she is concluded, I seriously can't understand how people can think Serena is a bad character at all. The only reason people can have for disliking her is because they don't like that she had a crush on Ash. But, probably thanks to said crush, Serena had a very distinct development that wasn't completely reliant on "a thing to do" like Tripokalons or Contests like May or Dawn or an aim for something great like Iris aiming for Dragon Master. Her crush on Ash made both characters grow in relation to eachother. Ash grows because Serena gives him support, and Serena grows because Ash returns that support. Serena was never about fulfilling a goal, it was about discovering and truly understanding a goal, thanks to the help of her friends, and I think that is a lot more interesting than previous girls before her.

I think saying "the only reason you can hate Serena is if you don't like her crush" isn't quite fair. Early in the series, I remember loving Serena's crush but not liking her character overall because she simply wasn't doing much. Only after XY39 did she really start to grow on me.

Man this wait for XYZ46 sub is going to be painful. It's literally the last episode needed to bridge the gap between everything, as the specials are filler-ish episodes that can be skipped.

Her character was in infancy during the first part of XY, but her character was still interesting because a legit crush on Ash had never been done before. It's not like she didn't do shit in the episodes themselves, like introducing Rhyhorn races and meeting Millefui for the first time. When she first met Ash is also one of the big moments because it's played off many times much later in other scenes where she is supporting Ash and vice versa.
