I don't think one week is anything to worry about, especially since your story's already completed. Once you finish writing a story, taking a break is fine. What's problematic is pausing while a story is ongoing... which happens to be what I've done, incidentally. I haven't posted anything in a month (But hopefully that'll change in a day or two).

And honestly, I really shouldn't be writing now. I've got other things I need to take care of, things that will keep me occupied for the next 2-3 weeks. But instead of working on that I'm devoting my time to fanfiction, all to force myself out of this rut and end my hiatus already.

I (take the blame in having) felt like the end of Chapter 9 was a solid beat, and didn't like Chapter 10 really being Second Story Teaser, but since the second story is now in suspension and possibly headed for the shelf (if not the morgue), an epilogue that remains relevant to the single story may be reasonable, although I'm not immediately sensing anything that needs to be said more. I guess you could skip ahead a little to something that would show that Alata's life is different now; perhaps visiting town as herself for the first time—this would let you generically establish a few things that could be relevant in later texts (how a legend is received by the public, if living among humans is even feasible given her being a pokemon and not a human-shape one that would be compatible with human designs, trainers' reactions, etc.) without becoming committed to treating such matters fully.

You can set the right mood for whatever you may use these characters for in the future and perhaps satisfy Vry. (A long shot, I know.)

I have a good chunk of the once-epilogue-now-introduction written, and capping it off wouldn't run afoul of not-yet-planned plots for the sequel, so that isn't much of a problem. It won't really be a full Ch.10 though, I always intended Ch.9 to close off the main story. Still, it'd be something, if it's felt something is needed.

You're not the only one who said that was a good closing point though, a couple other reviewers jumped to that conclusion (har) without being asked on the matter. I guess I'll wait for Vry to report in and I'll be getting another reviewer's opinion tomorrow or the day after. Since a lot of it already mentally 'written' and fresh in my mind, pushing an epilogue is way more feasible than the intro to a new story, at any rate.

Snivy. obviously she has a thing for exotic dragon types and he likes that cute squishy snout thing she does with nose boops. also dragons are warm and cold blooded snakes make good cuddling companions. they have to be careful with the bedtime snuggles though because of those tusk blades on Axew, but they get used to each other's physique relatively quickly

Fraxure is more of an issue though as those tusks get larger, not just with physical interaction but the simple act of sleeping in general. I'd go as far as to say out of all the profound philosophical questions I've tried to possibly in terms of Pokemon fanfiction, how Fraxure manages to sleep comfortably is one of the most difficult I've had to deal with:

-sleeping on the back is not an option because that jams the tailbone into the ground
-you can't sleep on the side because those tusks jam into the ground
-that only leaves sleeping on the stomach as which point you get a face full of dirt and who the fuck sleeps face down anyways

the anime portrays haxorus as sleeping in this weird sitting position which looks horribly uncomfortable to me but whatever works I guess, I think my Fraxure may just carve out some indentations in the ground that lets him at least sleep sideways comfortably even if he can't move up and down much

Things can sleep in positions that aren't laying down, you know. There are subspecies of bird that are identified specifically by how exactly they are sleeping upright, though I don't know of a bird that doesn't. Fraxure's not a bird, but it's probably more of a biology thing how your body can be positioned and be counted as at rest.

Dragons are basically cats, and thus can nap as such - curled into cute balls of anger.

Other than that, sleeping on a curved surface such as atop a rock should for the most part solve it, and helps avoid the face full of dirt issue you mention. As a bonus, contextually it makes sense, as the Pokémon will likely want to sleep atop a rock or other protrusion so they can still get a view (and hearing and scent) of the surroundings. Rocks also help block line of sight attacks such as Ice Beam.

Technology is something I've been quite shy about, largely because it's so damned variable across the games. Partially to blame is IRL technology's advancement. In the 90's, the concept of a handheld device that could take a photograph of a pokemon, identify it, verbalize an encyclopedia entry about it, and had a full color display was Technology Is Incredible-tier. Today, all that's a free app you could stick on a $20 burner phone. Pokemon technology has been forced to try to keep advanced beyond the present without getting too silly, and I feel like the canonization of Rotom in a pokedex is somewhat a lampshading of that, that instead of trying to push the antiquated Pokedex ahead of itself, it's more interesting to play with the concept in the context of the games' other features, such as mischievous amperage ghost.

That said, what are you seeking? I struggle to see how a trainer's device can secure a lead role in a fic. The AI you mention could I suppose take on the level of interest that Glados managed, but I'm not sure if it'd really be a pokemon fic at that point.

I haven't read any that make one of the gadgets you describe as a central focus of the story. I'm not sure it would make for a particularly interesting plot, either, since many of these random gadgets are simply excuses to give the player more random widgets or options to make gameplay easier. I have read stories that get more in-depth about pokeball/capture styler usage, but I suppose that isn't the kind of advanced technology you're thinking of here.

i'm still kind of unsure what you're talking about with this. what kind of plot are you looking for? what kind of story, really? there are plenty of trainer stories where the technology of the world are a major element of the lore (try Game of Champions for starters), but they're not the central focus of the story.

Things I want to mention is that since Sun has no real personality I had to make one for him so I made him play straight man to Hau's funny man. I am guilty of a bit of self-insertion. I avoided it as much as possible but it's kind of hard when you have nothing else to work with you know?

Also I had a hard time finding synonyms for malasada aside from pastry.

The primary sex scene is the one I really am worried about though I can't tell if its too detailed or not detailed enough.

i'd say its a little more complicated than that, mainly cause Mimiga's portrayal of mystery dungeons tends to make them a lot more "civilized" than either the games or most other PMD fics. if you start getting more in line with the games the idea of living in a dungeon becomes less reasonable because you can get kicked out my the mysterious dungeon fog and the wild pokemon in them pretty much act like rabid animals

A while ago, I sketched out a story that involved such a concept. Some Pokemon lived inside a hidden secret base in a mystery dungeon, and that kept their home from getting warped like the rest of the dungeon.

There is precedent for that sort of thing in-game, too. The secret bases in the games don't seem affected by the distortions that keep changing the rest of the dungeon, because Pokemon make them their homes (or at least take up temporary residence in them) and invite you to them. Clearly, they have at least some kind of permanence, otherwise nobody would want to live there.

Then again, secret base missions never tell you which floor the base is found on, so maybe the bases still do change their locations sometimes.

How do i make talking pokemon not feel forced/stilted in the story? I hate stories where it's basically just a dozen paragraphs of the trainer playing charades with his pokemon/instantly knowing what they are saying without showing any dialogue because of their "incredible bond", yet i usually only see talking pokemon in generic smut fics.

Well pokemon cannot really naturally talk, so it's kind of given that it feel forced in a main-universe story. You could have a psychic type run telepathy translation between the team and itself to the trainer, but that might get complicated or feel like what you're trying to prevent. The Anime typically just recites general concepts or uses Meowth specifically to translate more complex points, but Meowth is already embedded to deep into the status quo that anything but the anime introducing a similarly learned pokemon is strange.

the communication barrier between humans and pokemon gives the canon a lot of its charm. trainers and their pokemon have to find other ways to cooperate with each other and it's definitely a challenge for anyone but the most dedicated trainers to understand what their pokemon are trying to tell them. when you give pokemon human speech abilities I feel like you're giving the protagonist an easy out when better use of body language and a strong emotional bond could suffice

if you must have pokemon talking directly to humans at some point I suggest either limiting it to superintelligent pokemon or legendaries, who even then probably can't translate pokemon speech directly due to pokemon having a very different concept of language that is impossible to fully translate it into english.

or you could be a lamer and make it nuzlocke style where everyone just accepts that all pokemon can talk but I think that setup brings its own host of lore issues

When will this meme fucking die? Pokemon in the anime are shown talking with each other all the time, and Pikachu has had multiple nonverbal conversations with Ash. And that's not even counting the episode where a bunch of pokemon talked to each other about their missing trainers or the dozen pokemon they've shown speaking english.

If you try to pull the "B-but the game's don't have talking pokemon!" Then prepare to slip on your own asscheeks because they do. I think this is more a case of a human understanding Pokemon as opposed to Pokemon actually "talking", as in speaking the human language.

Well, most Pokemon can't talk to humans, but there are some cases where they do. In the games, there have been a couple rare instances: Lavender Tower's ghost Marowak in Gen I, a couple birdlike Pokemon in various gens, and some Legendaries using telepathy.
So, Pokemon talking to humans does not "break the world" like that other anon said, but it's also not meant to be a common thing.

But speaking of the subject of talking Pokemon, and humans understanding Pokemon speech: anyone care to give their thoughts on if it sounds too random or "snowflakey" to make a character who can understand Pokemon speech in a fanfic?
There have been multiple instances of characters with such an ability in the canon, but I think the games only feature N while the other characters come from other parts of the franchise. It's rare but not unheard of, so maybe it wouldn't be overly snowflakey, but I'm not sure.
I'm mainly curious about it because I've been toying with the idea of creating such a character at some point, but who knows if I'll ever really do it

And that's exactly the point. It's a more alive world, where people actually interact and are for the most part not scripted, whereas the Pokémon are still somewhat close to the games interpretation, so it provides a better (as in more effective) lens to grade out how something like Pokémon intelligence would be portrayed.

The anime would be a good potential milestone, not a starting point. But, as you have mentioned, it is too inconsistent. It has many gotchas and probably even a Catch-22 here or there I'm sure.

But at the same time, do not mistake intentional, *effective* ignorance with incompetence. After all, these design decisions that they make or don't with the games are making them print money, have been for several years. Even if they can and have done better, just never in the mainline games, Uncle Nintendo and John Gamefreak know the winning strategy is not to. - the same for the "stellar" games of their times, actually: all Final Fantasies from VI to X are very good examples of "game mechanics run (sometimes completely) counter to the game's message but PEOPLE ARE SHOVING MONEY IN OUR MOUTHS ANYWAY!!" turning into a development trend.

(This is all confounded by the fact that the games need not to reflect the expectations of the developers when they are released, but that's more a /v/ kind of conversation I feel)

If anything, I guess at least we can take our wins when we've gotten them. Interaction and "alive" presentation have improved thanks to advancing tech. It's just that all the new development seems geared to the oooooh new shiny, rather than dedicating what, +130 kb of text and branching code to the game's dialogue script.

A simple, perhaps revealing thought: more or less 57% of the size of X/Y is merely the 3D models for the Pokémon. About 67% for ORAS, and have no idea how much in SuMo yet. And all that size is used to offer, at most, three animations (one idle, two generic attacks) per Pokémon, all that *without* integrating it with the rest of the engine - up until ORAS at least, Ice Beams coming from the ears or Flamethrowers coming from the asses / dicks of the models was still a thing. Compared to that, the description switches for eg.: boxing or trading a Pokémon still didn't treat gender as a variable in X/Y. To my knowledge, no one called to GF to complain about the latter.

By the way, Game Freak doesn't make the spinoffs.

Even if they are human levels of intelligent, you could take a page from Digimon. They have to fight because that's what their body tells them to do. Tamers has a good scene where it's explicitly stated and shown to the pacifist character.

To be honest, I subscribe to the notion that, at least in fanfiction, you attract the Pokémon that are aligned with your desires. A Trainer who went Smogon-tier will attract pokemon who want power. A person who wants to sail the seas will attract Pokémon with similar affinities. Those who like to learn probably bring in Pokémon who soak in knowledge. Maybe they won't be able to take the SAT, but you could wind up with a Dark type who writes out his plans because his Trainer was also studying to be an architect.

I am the first to chide and attack GF on the wide and increasing array of things they have done wrong and keep doing wrong with the games and attached material. It's just that doesn't mean I don't recognize merit where it's due, or I don't recognize where their influence ends.

I could go on about how tricky "mediocrity" is when you are actually criticizing someone for "being successful but not in the way *I* want" and how that models your perception of the progress of the Pokémon games because your own wants progress faster, but I'll leave that for tomorrow at a saner hour.

so several months ago I was throwing out this idea on IRC that it would be hilarious to have a knock-off of Fate/stay night except with trainers murdering each other and instead of Servants having them team up with legendary Pokemon instead. apparently someone on Wattpad (yes, I've started scouring the hellish depths of online fanfiction repositories in search of good fics) did just that:

as goofy as the plot setup is (whenever Arceus dies or retires the legendaries all fight over who gets to be the next Arceus), there's some pretty entertaining dialogue and character development here, and despite the main character being obnoxiously naive at times most of the returning heroes are familiar main series protagonists given a surprising amount of personality and depth. my main complaints are that the trainers themselves barely do shit in battles as the legendaries murder each other and that the ending is a convoluted mess that leaves most of the plot threads open and doesn't tell us who even won the big battle royale. I honestly feel like the story was planned to go on 2 or 3 chapters longer but the author got tired of it and wanted to end it as quickly as possible.

whatever the case, if you like the fate series and pokemon you'll probably like this too.

It is complete, in a form. There's still stuff left to write about this new family, but I'm not sure what form it should take. I've been wrestling with that question (to the consternation of a beta reader with much better things to do). I might extend the story with a Parts 3 and 4, I might rewrite it as a "director's cut", or I might write a sequel. Whichever happens, I can't promise when it'll show up in the thread.
