Look at the presentation method. It's pretty clear they realized nobody really wanted Pokemon to be "a hilarious onslaught of jokes", so they're trying to present it differently in the marketing. I think once we reach the UBs and Aether arcs that it'll become a bit darker/more serious. Granted, the animation/art style remains the same but a lot of it can be redeemed through the writing. And the anime will always be a marketing tool first and foremost.
