By virtue of them putting the info in the game we can imply that it's supposed to be a gender thing. Why would they bother writing that flavor text if none of it is supposed to be true? It's not the same case as Alolan Raichu where they mention the pancake thing as an anecdotal theory the locals have about an intentional mystery. It's stated to be taken as factual lore , regardless of actual in game impact
