It started as a type dedicated to animals without special attributes, cute pink blobs that fit nothing else and gimmick mons like ditto. However it's not even a pure neutral type, considering it has it's own quirks like being immune to ghost and weak against fighting. Does it really make sense for Ditto and the Pokegod to be weak against fighting?
Now things get even dumber the more and more they make normal type pokemon with double typing.

Then there's flying which was initially just a secondary type but tornadus already broke the rule and it's the main type of Noivern.

Still not enough. Make it an immunity to ghost and in return give ghost an immunity to it. And while we're at it we could use it to reshape the type chart a bit. I think some good small changes would be to make it resisted by rock (rock needs boosts) and steel (obligatory). Fighting would lose its edge without the normal type so I think also give it a weakness to fighting.

Good ideas though anons, ???/typeless is a good replacement for normal, which was admittedly pretty useless.

The problem with Normal isn't that it exists, but rather that it's combined with things. By nature of being an elemental beast, you're no longer "normal". All Pokémon that are half-normal should have the typing removed, with the exception of Doduo/Dodrio who should become pure Normal because, well, they don't fly.

I think introducing this type, in face of eliminating Normal, would make much more sense even if it to be of a limited pool instead of making whismur a fairy.
Other sound types: Noivern, Pyroar, Meloetta, Chatot, Jiggly line, Mismagius (if it isn't ghost/fairy).
