Ever wondered what newer gen attacks would look like in gen 2?
Here's my attempt at re-creating Bug Buzz.
OP here, give me a new attack to recreate and i will do it
The Rage animation followed by the Bide animation
a more prolonged Fire Spin animation
Surf animation plus burn animation
Maybe Defense Curl animation + Hyper Beam animation?
The Seismic Toss animation used on the player's pokemon.
>mfw X Accuracy is broken in first two gens
and by broken I mean that the attack will never fail the accuracy check, even if it's an OHKO. Attacks can still miss under specific conditions, like semi-invulnerability turn, even in G1 where Swift ignores them.
>inb4 forgot to add sp.atk reduction
>mfw overheat with no sp.atk reduction
Was really interested in trying this move and it turned out pretty gud i think.
The perfect game would be gen2 with the Physical/Special split and better distribution of pokemons.
HGSS had the split but none of the other changes that would have helped.
Also it needs to be released for the GBC.
keep goin op, once this message is read all we know, we are treading a dread thread, don't let it get dead, keep it afloat and overhead, don't go to bed, that's what i said, take your meds
It really is my favorite of the main series as well, I just think it's a shame they didn't decide to fix those two things.
It's widely agreed that those are the biggest flaws so why not change them. After all I thought that was the point of remakes, to improve on an already good game.
last one for now, Discharge.
And im using the pokemon crystal dissasembly.
>After all I thought that was the point of remakes, to improve on an already good game.
the point is to make more money off an already good game
ideally they would fix things, but that comes secondary to the new coat of paint
When you get back, I want you to do a psychic-type attack of your choice. So something like Extrasensory, Zen Headbutt, Psycho Cut, Psyshock or Psystrike. Or maybe Trick Room?

holy fuck somebody needs to take these, add them into a Crystal Hack, and while they're at it add in the physical/special split.
I would love to replay Crystal, but I just can't force myself to go back to a time when several types has such bare-bones options for moves, and certain pokemon were just screwed with their stats not matching their typing.

limitations of Gameboy hardware and animating multiple things at once
You don't need to use any Python to work with the disassembly, you just need to run the programs already made by other people.
Fairy-type and the split are both easy to implement.
Also this shit is godlike, OP, keep it up.
You can, but, there's still the issue of move slots. Move slots are made up of one byte, 256 moves, and 00 and FF can't be used because they're used for functions, so that leaves you with 254 moves. GSC alread has 251 moves in it, so that's only room for three before you have to replace existing moves.
You could theoretically give moves two bytes of data for its slots, which would give you a hypothetical 65536 (minus two) moves and no need to ever worry about slots again, but you would have to rewrite every single piece of the game involving moves so that it uses two bytes instead of one. It's theoretically doable but nobody's done it since it requires a lot of work.
So assuming I want to recreate newer moves like OP. I'd have to open the asm files on notepad and change stuff in them right? How would someone let's say recreate u-turn for example?
This is fantastic, OP. If a Gen 2 hack implemented all this, I'd play the shit out of it.
Well the few moves I attempted to create don't look nearly as good as OP's (I just copied existing animations, maybe added an extra effect or changed the sound clip, like my Fairy Wind is just Razor Wind with a different sound effect), but yeah, you have the gist of it. Basically the way I figure out anything in this disassembly is by looking at how similar things are done, analyzing them, and copying what they do exactly, changing what's needed to get the effect I want. Pic related is what the code for move animations look like, this specific one is just me copying Flash, removing the shake animation at the end and adding a flashing animation at the end (the one that appears when a Pokémon gets hit).
Well that wouldn't work exactly. You'd want to make a different effect copied from Baton Pass but remove the "new Pokémon has the same stat changes as the old one" effect, otherwise the move would have a combined U-Turn and Baton Pass effect.
enter 'learn python the hard way' into your favorite search engine
if my little siblings can pick up at least the basics, you can too
there's also a bunch of MIT open courses on basic programming/cs stuff, also in python if I recall
Its easy if you're using the Pokered/pokecrystal disassembly. You can add about ~10 new moves in r/b/y
The hardest part for me was figuring out what hex values control what animations.
However, when I tried to add new moves without removing old ones in crystal, I got allotted-space errors when compiling. So I don't think its possible to just add new moves without moving massive tables of data around. Although I didn't put much effort in to it as I was more interested in modding R/B
Are you using pokecrystal? Pokered has moves.asm in the data folder, in Pokécrystal it's
>how do I define what I want a certain move to do if said effects aren't already in the game?
You'll have to code it in yourself.
OP here, request granted

simple method of using animation routines already in game and having the play at the right time in the right combos. Would recomend doing it unless you have experience with python and such. I am using Cygwin with windows for python and "Notepad++" for editing the attacks.
OP here again.
>mfw that terrible typing

Oh wow, that's better than I expected, I apologize for doubting when I posted >>25072793
Are you planning on using these for a hack of your own or are you just doing them for the fun of making them?
Theoretically you would have to create a new sprite or recolor an existing sprite, then add it to the graphics tables, then point to it in your animations asm. I haven't done it personally so I'm not sure if its that simple. Usually its just easier to use existing sprites.
Recolouring sprites shouldn't be that hard.
I mean, I only did it way back with Clonk Planet so my experience is limited, but it worked out. And I barely knew what a computer was back then.
One of my choices, Horn Leech.
>no pokes under gen 5 that learn Horn leech
>inb4 Exeggutor has horns jokes

The constraints of the medium force the creators work extra hard to make everything pleasurable and requires them to be inventive and make every single design distinct and memorable.
And it's at a level where it's simple but still expressive and effective, so it never gets outdated and doesn't become more or less appealing depending on current trends.
This. It's similar to how much a game is compressed; older games would squeeze as much as possible into a few MB, and in the specific case of GSC, Game Freak had Iwata make a special compression method for the game that saved a ton of space in the ROM and allowed a truncated Kanto to be put in the game (not that this isn't a well-known story).
Now people don't even try, current-gen PC games go above 40GB at times because devs don't give a shit about space and just assume the customer will buy a 1TB harddrive to make more room.
Nah, it's cooler to go full Final Fantasy and have it be a shower of meteors.
Hyperspace Fury only works with Hoopa, so it can't be used in gen 2. :^)
For real though, OP, you should make something fun like Ice Ball, Icicle Spear, Magical Leaf, Ingrain, Heat Wave or Grass Whistle, rather than just those high base power moves. But anything would be neat. Please just make more!
OP here, dont worry im on it, just taking a little break will do an ice type move next
with sound: http://webmshare.com/oK14g
Sneasel might be not shit in a gen 2 with more ice moves
I love OP
Grasswhistle, i tried to recreate the tune as best I could.

OP here, Im not sure its possible to create Fusion bolt or bolt strike with what i can work with.
Easily one of the best threads I've ever seen on /vp/, 10/10. The only animation that I would alter is Overheat since it would be better without the Flame Wheel intro, but other than that I love all of them.
I especially like how the animations stay very true to the style of Gen II and look like they could really be in the games. Also, where do you OP come up with all these ideas like adding those Razor Leaf leaves to the animation of Grasswhistle? I would never have enough imagination to create animations like this.
Also, if you're still taking requests, I'd love to see Magneton using Flash Cannon.

It's something I've wanted to do for a while but I also don't have the skills and I don't want to constantly bother the disassembly IRC asking trivial shit while they're busy trying to disassemble Emerald.
Cross Poison. Last one for tonight, I sleep now.

Looks like I came in too late but OP these were all fucking incredible. I'd kill to play a G/S/C rom with all of these kinds of moves in the game. God damn these are cool.
Yea recently I was told TES Online was like 80 GB download where meanwhile you can download FF14 like 3-4 times with that amount of space. I am pretty sure there are hard drives that still exist that would never be able to hold TES Online, personally though I am used to counting by the GB and often only buy hard drives by the TB. Still I can't help but to think that someone honestly thought 80 GB space uptake is completely fine just for a MMO. Seem like people just don't give a shit anymore.
Seriously last one for tonight.

Just some food for thought, since all the colors are inverted when the rocks fall, you could imagine that the rocks are originally blue with white outlines, and are only colored like real rocks because of the inversion.
Dude, these are awsome. You should put the source code on github or something so anyone who happens to be doing the move swapping, phys/spec split, gen 6 mechanics godhack people are creaming thier panties over can use these things.
Certainly a better fate then dying unused and forgotten on 4chan....
I've been watching this thread since it started, it's really quite something. I'd love to see these in a gen 2 hack someday.
If you want requests still, maybe another setup move? I'd like to see Shell Smash.
>this will never be finished
>not even a beta coming out
I'm late to the thread, but this is fantastic work, OP. I honestly could see all of these being legitimate in the game had the moves existed at the time.
I was originally planning to make a rebalancing of crystal (gyms, level scaling, all that good stuff) and had the idea of incorporating new moves but move editors are kinda bleh. If I learn how to code them in then you'll likely see them in my romhack some day.
well err...each time i finish a move i undo the changes, simply to keep my rom clean each time i make a new move so there isnt any clashing.
but if you guys really want, I can upload the codes too.
If you don't mind, there's alot of terribad and redundant moves in gen 2 so a hack being able to swapping them for good STAB would be great and these animations would be awesome for such a hack.
This contains my code for cross poison. Use it as you wish.
I adore what you are doing OP you are making a lot of peoples dreams come true... Keep up the good work it's sensational and the Cicken Feed part was hillarious and Genius! If I could have one request that would blow my mind. Make my buddy Steelix do Giga Impact or Heavy Slam because you make these powerful moves always epic beyond meassure. Your biggest fan!
OP here, since you asked so nicely...that will be my next move to make
You don't want to know human...
You have my unholy blessing
No, I'm a mascot in a Horrorcore band. You asked who am I, was I suppose to give you my name?
Giga Impact (Epileptic Warning)

Wonderful, while I was looking for x-scissor but getting that out of this should be child's play.
I've been doing some move-swapping hacks of my own but never really put time in anims, have just been cloning them wholesale from existing moves because I'm doing other crazy things, but these are another level.
If you could make dragon pulse and (re)make flash cannon and moonblast (maybe replace the absorbing amin with the moon to avoid the line glitch?) for the source code that would be awesome.
Why would I be envious of having autism?
Jesus Christ I thought this was a pokemon thread why comment when you will not relate to anything? You couldn't even answer me think about it... Yes I'm an Autist and an idiot because I posted my opinions here and ofc because I'm not an anon. I'm sorry for making your day somehow worse. I'm sorry I insulted you somehow. I'm sorry I irritated you I'm sooo sooo sorry how can you ever forgive and Autistic idiot?

Not very well, I think. Probably something like combining Vice Grip and Clamp's animations.
Coincidentally, I found a video of all of Gen 2's attack animations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBMqOSxaLC8
They seem to be in alphabetical order, so you can skim the video that way if you're looking for a specific move.
Shell Smash, sorry took so long was trying to get the status effects working. (still learning here)

OP Here, to tell you the truth I never thought this little side project would get so popular so I never intended to keep going. Its fun to make these animations but Im not implementing them in my hack, Im just testing to see if it could be done.
As such Im going to stop when this thread hits its limit.
O-oh. well, uh, thanks for your OC anyway. it was fun.
It's been said like ten times in the thread, he's been using the Crystal disassembly.
God bless, OP, if my dream of expanding the amount of moves ever comes true I'll use all of these in the ROMbase, assuming I find you to get the code.
OP here, this will be my last post. Thank you to all who cheered me on and made suggestions.
If you interested in my other work i will point you to it: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=347879
take care you guys and feel free to use any of the animations i posted.
