When I first played Pearl, my final party was Crobat, Golduck, Medicham, and a Bibarel HM slave. There just weren't enough Pokemon for to bother using. Thankfully Platinum fixed that.

Magmortar has options out of the ass, but you'll need a Magmarizer and a trade to get it.
Houndoom's easier, has a mure useful ability, and I think it's available slightly earlier as well.
I'd go with Houndoom for simplicity and Dark STAB, but either would probably work fine.
