I think I remember reading somewhere that schizophrenia/bipolar/other mental illnesses and artistic abilities are pretty deeply linked. Who knows if it was true but it does sound about right, my dad is schizophrenic and has BPD and some of his best works are from when he wasn't on meds and his illnesses were affecting him really badly. Pretty much everyone on his side of the family is artistic in some way but they're all mentally ill. And then a bunch of great digital artists are all fucked in the head too. I'm guessing my art kinda sucks since thankfully that shit didn't get passed down to me, all I have is depression.

Lots of comments about the quality of story and characters, but personally I think that Reborn is one of the best currently available/fully translated/>30 hours of gameplay available Essentials games that there currently is.

The anti-grinding over-level mechanic is not as bad as I thought it would be; the story gives you badges and encounters at a very reasonable pace, that as long as you have a team of at least 3-4 non-shitmons, you don't usually overlevel, and the penalty for overleveling is basically just a ~30% to do a random attack instead of your order.

The game gives you a bunch of weird early-route shitmons and makes you build a team around them, and there's a TON of sidequests/puzzles for you to get "better" Pokes. I think actually catching a pseudo-legendary in this game was actually really rewarding, as opposed to basically having my full team for an E4 ready by the second gym.

There's a big, and IMO, very prettily-crafted world with a bunch of puzzles and nontraditional/linear approaches to get you to look for stuff.

The boss battles (and fields, in general) walk a fine line between balanced/bullshit. There's a bunch of custom fields that gives bonuses to different moves, i.e, a Forest field that strengthens Grass/Bug/Sound moves, boosts healing from Leftovers/Draining moves, and can be burned by spread Fire attacks into a different field. While the AI (and your team) doesn't always have the correct tools to fully use a field, it adds a little extra dimension/challenge.

Gym leaders and other bosses are challenging by moveset, along with field bonuses; the game is beatable with just a strongly EV'd team and basic type match-ups, and remains fairly simple if you lead with a strong set-up sweeper that the opponent can't reliably KO. However, it's definitely one of the harder fangames I've played. I like it that you can't just overlevel your starter Greninja/Blaziken and sweep everything you see with just the moves you learn from level-up.

Sorry about rambling, a few final bits:

Reborn, along with Insurgence, are the only 2 games I'm aware of that have access to trading with other players; since it's in RPGMaker, use of cheat engine to speed up egg hatching means that you can actually breed a team with good IV's fairly early on, and there's a lot of "good" Pokemon that are locked behind random events that require you to interact with other players to get them (Staryu, Larvesta, and Axew, off the top of my head.)

There's a boss battle with a Garchomp that was genuinely one of my favorite fangame moments when I actually beat it.

Anyways OP, I would heavily suggest you give Reborn a try. It's free, and it's a lot of time/puzzles to sort through. If you think the characters/settings are too edgy, that's fine. I didn't especially like the writing and fastforwarded through most of the conversations, but I got a nuzlocke-ish feeling of attachment to the team of shitmons that I ended up playing the game against, and that's a really rare feeling for me when I'm doing Pokemon games anymore.

As far as the game itself goes, its really good.
The story isn't great and I don't like that it has a bunch of political agenda stuff shoved in, but other than that it is definitely the most enjoyable fangame I have played. The difficulty, length, and variety of new environments to play with is definitely something to be commended.

This is my current team, though I have other members that I swap out pretty often too.

played it for about 2 hours. whole game is just ugly and made me feel glum. overworld looks terrible and theres no variety. First town was too big and easy to get lost in. I went in thinking the field weather in battle stuff was going to be cool but its always set up against you.
first gym being the perfect example. gives all her electric types additional damage against you with no benefits to you. dropped it for insurgence, and that game was edgy as fuck. albeit pretty fun.

This. When I can get a Sheer Force Totodile, Axew, Riolu, Dragon and Fairy starter, the game just feels like a constant series of easy wins, even considering every boss starts using a mega beginning at the 2nd fucking gym.

Considering the actual region itself has barely any lore outside of the villains and it's horribly linear with barely emphasis on its rest stop towns, it gets tiresome. It also doesn't help the creator decided to make Archie/Maxie v2 the villains, along with some edgy teenager, le animu blond man with le mega fug, and a fedora tipping hyper competitive faggot.

Except you're not? You don't unlock the friend safari until after the 1st gym, where you have to win a very difficult battle to unlock it. So all that "extremely powerful pokemon" bullshit is just that, bullshit.

Second, there's a hard mode where you're not allowed to overlevel, since your pokemon start getting 1exp until you beat the current story boss/gym leader

This thread got me to pull out my old save for this, while the story is absolute shit it presents a lot of interesting challenges to overcome (despite a few bullshit ones) and a whole host of convenience changes that I'd love to see in an official game (being able to see EVs/IVs as a number, HMs being forgettable, Common Candies as a whole).

A game with lots of good ideas and an ambitious team that also have the failings of deviantart/tumblr/fanfiction.net teenagers, namely special snowflake self-insert characters. Apparently the major character are nearly all the self-inserts of the team, and the deaths in-game, namely the absolutely bumfuck retarded suicide and the gym leader who got killed, were because the actual people who owned those characters actually killed himself/died of some wasting disease. I haven't been able to confirm this, though.

Not pictured in team, Arcanine and Golurk.

Unfortunately the archive has lost the screenshots of the playthrough I did, but the thumbnails are still there. I'm not sure if I can just offer to give the admin the files I still have to replace them.

If anyone here was looking at that Rejuvenation run, apparently a new release will be coming soon. I'll be playing it here again.

Where the music was not just stock Essentials music, it was forgettable as fuck. The battle theme against the water team leader (can't even remember her name lmao) is so underwhelming beyond belief. I can't remember a single town/route theme.

Assuming you're the same guy who said it could be challenging, I'll concede a few things. The battle against le Original Dragon "namehere" memer man is such a massive spike in levels that yes, it was hard. The Primal Kyogre fight was hard. Everything else was so ridiculously fucking easy because the game gives you so many opportunities to just mow down trainers.

I've not played the Hard Mode, but I can't imagine the lack of being able to overlevel is a problem.

I've also barely talked about the story, which is incredibly try hard. I've mentioned that it centers around the villains, but of the supporting cast of heroes you have a boring genius grill and Wally v2 who both literally contribute nothing, you're conveniently present at every major event, the plot twists are so laughably random that they make no sense whatsoever (ok so wally v2 is Archie v2's son? What?) even fucking reborn with the suicidal lesbians and edgelord has intimidating villains and dynamic characters, and a somewhat interesting central conflict.
