Shitpost better next time. It's not about the design; it's about the style. People who favor the older Pokemon visually are fans of the original style. The newer gens may have clever designs, but the generic anime style makes them stand out less.

The two games aren't really comparable. Yokai Watch tends to have intentionally strange/wacky designs. Most of the designs are supposed to be jokes, so they do seem pretty lame out of context.

I suppose my choice in words could have been better. The bottom line is that the overall style of the newer designs is a lot less destinctive than the those from the first two gens. There are newer Pokemon that are exceptions to the rule, but they are few and far between.

Though it did have a decent amount of based Pokémon, like the venipede like and the ayy lmaos and a couple more that I can't be bothered to list

It's hard to do simple well. It's much easier to fuse a bunch of random spikes, stripes, and ultimately useless decorative details together and call it "creative". Any (smart) professional artist will tell you this. There's also a level of immersion involved with drawing inspiration from familiar animals. Less is more.
