Yeah, that's just it: You get conditioned not to use the Fight button, even though it becomes a necessity. I don't think there's ANY dialogue that indicates that you need to sometimes "Fight for Mercy".

I'll admit that I found undertale enjoyable and definitely very creative. The Genocide Route was nothing more than a middle finger to the player and probably a way of Tony Fox saying that his game was superior to other RPGs, but I can ignore that as it's not forced upon the player.

Best game of the year stretches it and I know that without the massive hype train it rides it would probably not come close.

Best game of all time is unacceptable and more evidence that the general quality of a video game is more decided by the fluctuating emotions of teenagers and trendsetters shilling their shit rather than level headed mature thinkers who can sit back and process all the angles.

But really, music and video games and recent films are usually aimed at teens and edgelords to begin with. I'm fine with that but goddamn, the redditors and tumblrites and whatever other cancerous social media really do get obnoxious.

Yeah, pretty much. But it got its own Kickstarter and people have followed it for a while. I think the game exudes a certain charm similar to (I really am sorry here for saying this since everyone says it) Earthbound. I never played Earthbound. I'm sure there are other people who aren't. Undertale is a good entryway into that, especially for the teen crowd you talk about who may not have experienced it.

There really ISN'T a best game of all time, though, and realistically there won't be. It's the same for music, movies, or any artistic form. I liked Undertale, but I do agree, it's not even close; I'm not sure what game is.

Undertale is "a game that makes you feel good", as I read one person describe it. The neutral and True Pacifist endings can really invoke some pleasant feelings you don't get in other games. It's not the only one to do it, but it's cheap, it's written relatively-well, and it's popular.

I think you're reading too much into that. After all, Earthbound served as a huge influence for him, and he was an active member of the Mother fanbase for a long time. In fact, a song from the Genocide route, Megalovania, was originally composed for an Earthbound fanhack he created.
