With 30 minutes left in Sunday on the eastern coast and Midwest, can an entertaining and informative Sage Sundays update thread be accomplished? Find out next time on Autism Ball Z. Now a word from our sponsors
Yes, in fact, it's the moment /vp/ has been waiting for. The FIRST edition of Project VPMAGG: Generation Sage UPDATE THREAD, more amicably known as Sage Sunday. This is something we
Ihave been wanting to do to get the vp community more involved in their titular project than the occasional "Whatever happened to Sage?" threads. The idea is for Sage Sunday to serve as a weekly update on the current condition of the project, along with answers to any questions and sharing some completed/nearly completed content.
So without further ado, a quick rundown of what was accomplished this week before content and
literally absolutely nothing
-A new palm tree sprite was created for tropical routes
- 4 maps are confirmed and programmable
- 3 more maps began development
- Bug fixes for Sagedown
the continued harassment of everyone's favorite neighborhood autist
- The continued existence of some custom moves, either in their current capacity or at all, was discussed in length.
- Distros were discussed (details in thread)
- The creation and conversion into our soundfont of a ton of terrific possible Pokeman themes, among other pieces.
Look in thread for examples of content generated this week. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the project, and please give feedback on anything showcased.
just so you guys know, majora has some pretty sick disses
getting this out of the way
>The continued existence of some custom moves, either in their current capacity or at all, was discussed in length.
Haven't you decided that all the gym leaders will give custom TMs? Imagine how shitty a player is going to feel when they get the first three okay-but-ultimately-mediocre TMs from the respective gyms only to get a boring-but-infinitely-more-valuable TM for Dark Pulse
Here are the Pokeman designs we're currently narrowing down
the top row ones are all identical, each one more identical than the last
Most of the debate with the custom TMs is just frustration with them. Some were modelled after Scald, which is pretty broken as is. Ice Rink is notorious for causing a lot of programming errors for whatever fucking reason.
More or less, although I don't think every Gym had designed for it a custom move. If one fit it was added but right now the problem is that after some review, most of the moves are either unusable-tier shitters or just wonky when it comes to programming. Most of them will have an overhaul, and some of them might get removed, is the general consensus right now.
I have the exact opposite opinion. Add shit only complicates/detracts from the fact that his head is a pokeball
why didn't you just make that into trick room that reduces the accuracy of contact moves for non-ice types and remove all the other shit about it activating abilities, causing crash damage or changing nature power?
An astonishingly minute number of people care about those things and would rather play a functional game
This person is the champ. But Pokeman as champ is the person out of costume. This design will only ever exist when you meet them during plot and such.
You what? Shouldn't you be getting this stuff right?
Look at the belts senpai
these are sage Sundays and the plan is to have one every sunday from now on. So, no, they haven't been done.
Any good parts of the midwest fall under EST
>tfw losing a playoff game and having your entire time zone shit on all in one day
>Look at the belts senpai
You should worry about the sprites first, nothing but spritework will be seen in the actual game and I can't imagine any of those details showing up very clearly or memorably when reduced to mere pixels
Huh? I just said "Yup"?
And here is the concept that was voted in.
Outside of the costume he is a charismatic guy who rose through his own hard work. He's well liked by most and takes on a mentor-esque position for young trainers. He seeks out problems before they get bigger. He was investigating ET and originally donned the Pokéman persona because he feared reprisal and didn’t have enough evidence to prove their guilt. Acting a bit sillier to hide his true identity (and as he confesses himself “the costume just brings it out of you”). In costume he acts like a Power Ranger/Sentai. Speaking about justice, friendship, etc
If you battle him as champ in costume or not is still to be decided. We were thinking possibly having you fight him one way the first time then the subsequent times you battle E4 he would be the opposite.
they look awful, just use gf's palm trees from the platinum post game area as placeholders until you make some that aren't shit
like i'm not one to just call stuff horrible freely, but those are actually terrible.
>not knowing about sage already
were you not on /vp/ from 2012 to early 2015
Redpill me on distros
Just use pic related, tallest palm trees in the world: Wax Palm. It's the national tree of Colombia.
Distros is all the shit that goes on the routes: what Pokemon, the % distribution and levels, and trainer classes, locations, and teams, and then whatever fucking items and berries go on the route.
It's now on a schedule, and should be caught up with maps by the time Round 5's done.
every part of them is just bad: they don't match the art style of the sprites from the demo you released in summer at all, and judging by the other shit in that screenshot, that's still th style you have; the perspective is wack, the lighiing is bad, etc
i'll give you credit that the way you can see the layers of bark is kinda cool and matches actual plam trees, and I wouldn't have thought that could be shown well, but I still think even that's not great and could probably be done better.
it's not that hard of an idea to come up with senpai
i don't know, if I knew sprites or art well enough to critique that well then i'd have been making shit and I wouldn't have been left behind when you guys left.
but I can say it looks bad
The lighting is fine, it doesn't use too many shades, has proper contrast and a consistent light source.
The texture on the trunk is a little shitty and lazily done however.
I didn't want to make these in the first place, the other trees are perfectly fine.
>- The continued existence of some custom moves, either in their current capacity or at all, was discussed in length.
For those it concerns. The main offenders are for specific reasons.
>Code quips and complexity issues
-Team player (99% chance of being dropped)
And a prediction from me
>Really, really redundant or shit to use even in game.
-Standoff (It's mean look with a drawback. An already niche move but worse.)
-Scald but steel type lol! (forge press)
All this in addition to a handful of people not liking that customs exist at all. And the fact that even some unlisted here have been totally not touched regarding essentials.
Everyone is a faggot.
Look at code for stealth rocks to see how to code for heals upon entering and then look to magic guard for how to set on your own side.
For Asteroid Belt, aren't you changing that to Rock Heat Wave?
>Did autism-major bug you to sprite it?
Nah, the group had a big argument about route 9 about how we'd want to go about making barriers. We didn't want it to be mountainous/hilly so cliffs were out of the question, there were complaints that the palm trees were too skinny and we couldnt use them as barriers, I said they weren't meant to be barriers.
I suggested just using fucking fences because that's the entire reason they even exist but people were against it because ???
So yeah, I made these fat pieces of shit.
Majora also suggested we use pic related
Anyway, regardless, we're still not using the platinum trees. We only use placeholders if an original sprite doesn't exist period. Even if a sprite is sub par, we use it until something better is made.
It turns a few moves into utterly ridiculous memes. 200 BP with no drawbacks wew.
That being said most it's issues just vanish the moment platikhao doesn't have reversal.
>Look at code for stealth rocks to see how to code for heals upon entering and then look to magic guard for how to set on your own side.
That would be really great if that was what made it a pain in the ass.
Fiesta is utter tripe because it consumes a layer upon being used, this is surprisingly difficult to tackle without a rewrite of hazards entirely.
>For Asteroid Belt, aren't you changing that to Rock Heat Wave?
that's asteroid shot.
-Team player (99% chance of being dropped)
And a prediction from me
literally all of these are shit
just make fiesta into aqua ring and remove the second fiesta
change salt crash to a salt-type move
Here's how it works.
Nobunata uses fiesta twice. There are two layers. Next mon in eats one layer.
Eating one layer is giving me some shit. There is literally, l i t e r a l l y. Nothing that can be looked at for a comparison. But that's ok I've heard word that mage has it working I hope.
>Predators that don’t pay heed to Platypow because of its tiny size are quickly surprised by its fiery nature and its remarkably strong punches.
this is fucking stupid
why does it attack predators if they explicitly pay it no heed? why mention the far more interesting point that it's tail is a helmet instead of something painfully generic?
>every pokemon with this ability has a STAB move of at least 150 BP without any drawbacks
>clear body doesn't prevent self inflicted stat drops so Diamat is a shitmon but somehow this is allowed
On a switchin, if fiesta triggers (ie: damaged) then take a layer off.
The take a layer off part is the issue here.
This does not play nice with other hazards, and you wind up with no hazard damage, no heals, all hazards removed or what have you.
Mind you this is on showdown, I have heard mage has it working in essentials which is all that really matters.
you're right. I looked at it again and this is the semantic value i got:
>predators ignore it because it is too small to be noticed and too small to be a substantial meal
I only thought it meant "too small to notice" before. This is worse, thanks
what the fuck is the point of salt crash
it looks like a shit move
is the increased rate of it triggering an effect is supposed to be a convoluted reference to salt being good luck or is it just a bad attempt to make a move unique despite it being worthless?
Both are quality a bad fit art style wise, but >>24982902 is a good 1 or 2 points worse in terms of quality
just use fences and water and a normal palm tree here or there, or have that one guy whose amazing at everything who does your art make >>24982902 but not shit.
hell, just cheat by having it be like 2 or 3 palms bunched together like pic reelated
>Both are quality a bad fit art style wise, but >>24982902 is a good 1 or 2 points worse in terms of quality
I'm not even saying they're good but what the fuck man. I can't even.
>captcha has me select palm trees
>Sage has sweet ass palmtrees
My favorite kind of tree! Looks like im gonna have to step up my palm game to keep up with you guys.
Game is looking great, keep up the good work!
>Cascotta and its evolution line were an alternative design for the Water starter Pokémon
What? No they're not. I didn't design them to be a starter.
Also who gave my pangolin ears? Pangolins don't gots ears.
while I also think the ears ar dumb, I don't think most people would be in favor of us changing designs again
not that that stopped us culling yellow alpint.
I do think making a gender difference (alongside maybe kobersus's foot fur) would be cool though, we only have 6 lines with them.
Yeah, whil I don't think it's popular it's not unanimously disliked.
There's thankfully not too much left until the new one, I think.
It's down to the "distros" stuff and 5 more maps - Route 9, Route 10, Andante Bay, Starry Cave, and the Hobo Dojo. Other than that, it's really just dialogue, but all that stuff is usually sequential and pretty time consuming.
Don't forget. We're going to have to do all the building interiors too. Dronia is going to be your least favourite city come release. The system is much more streamlined for interiors though. No need for 2 meeting s with them
it's a mountain horsey
never probably because it's not a special mon
pretty much done honestly. All mons besides Diamat for some reason have updated stats and movepools and Bigro has worked out most of the kinks. pls come and help us test teams, it gets lonely.
For a long time routes and distros were one big Clusterfuck™. David stepped up for distros and Swim stepped up for mapping and now we're having regularly scheduled meetings and things are coming along much better than they ever did.
The dex entries were /shit/ before we redid them. If you were involved in the old dex entries and you're mad they got changed, sorry. But they were awful. It took us a good three months to overhaul them and during that period we took opinions and suggestions from every member still involved in the project and ran supermajority surveys to confirm them. We did it by the books and honestly 95% of them are great. Write a letter to gamefreak about how bad theirs are and see how far you get.
you know who
go home majora
err, no? Probably not? That's something that'll be discussed eventually I'm sure. Personally, as far as being able to fill the dex I would rather work in a "see the picture in a book" kind of deal where just interacting with something filled their dex slots. But it's not out of the realm of possibility for post-game, I'm sure.
> Personally, as far as being able to fill the dex I would rather work in a "see the picture in a book" kind of deal where just interacting with something filled their dex slots. But it's not out of the realm of possibility for post-game, I'm sure.
Sorry, must have missed the day we decided that and then decided not to write it down anywhere or remember it, only to be passed down by oral tradition like the Ballad of Beowulf through the meadhalls of 8th century England
>The creation and conversion into our soundfont of a ton of terrific possible Pokeman themes, among other pieces.
Post please! The music is honestly one of the things I'm most interested in with this game.
Also, when are you guys gonna convert the golem battle themes to the B/W soundfont? Those three are fucking amazing.
>everyone saying these trees are shit
I think they look great. Not sure if the type of tree is the best choice, but the quality of the tile itself is great. Just look at >>24983055.
Anything other than a plain pokeball for a mask would suck. If you want to add stuff, you might as well give him an actual sentai-esque mask.
Also the standard belt looks best, though I think it looks better when it isn't white. Having it in the blue/grey with the multi-coloured boots like the first three of the middle row would be perfect.
This would be an amazing costume for the actual champion battle and ONLY the chapion battle. That, or it's an easter egg for when you challenge him for the tenth time.
I like both versions, desu.
Hey, all! Pl4ntman here, also known as Iwilldevouryourkittens. I'm a musicfag for the project.
Here are some of my contribooshuns:
Thought I'd check in and see everyone's thoughts on the project so far.
I can easily come up with costume unlock ideas, but most would proably be too much hassle or too unnecessary (like changing his team or location). The premierball, I think, would work best as a single little 'secret' because, after all, who
outside of /vp/battles the champion 10+ times on the same file?
Gives you like 4 things, and maybe does something in the Distortion World.
Actually does things.
Joins you in one (two in oras) fight.
You didn't even include Lance in the list, and he does more than Cynthia, what with the whole Lake of Rage and Team Rocket HQ bit.
...I suppose that is more than I thought before, huh.
Doesn't mean the champion can't be doing other things publicly, alongside his moonlighting.
Well the problem that came up with a lot of the writers for Pokeman was that him repappearing in costume in the postgame caused a minor continuity error with the plot they had in mind for him. I don't think one costume Easter egg will be enough to convince them it's worth overlooking, but with enough of them the content might outweigh the criticism.
The autism of a few never speaks for the many
The guys we have on plot have come up with some really good stuff. But temper your expectations if you want, that way you'll come out pleasantly surprised.
wow I forgot the fucking link
Wait, there's an intricate plot for Pokéman during the postgame? And one that would cause problems for a harmless Premierball secret for the tenth rematch, no less? I'm aghast.
Would you mind sharing the story then, so I can work a way around it? I remember some hostility towards quirky and unnecessary ideas in the past, but this one is so harmless and - dare I say - obvious that is simply HAS to happen.
By the way, I'm literally only thinking of rematches in the sense of re-challenging the Elite Four. Not stumbling over him somewhere post-game and challenging him. Surely THAT can't possibly interfere with post-game, unless he simply isn't there to battle you all the time. Which would be irrelevant, because the suggestion merely talks about the tenth rematch against Pokéman, regardless of when they can be fought.
Bretty gud, but the buildup is too long, it only really gets going around 0:38. It doesn't really get me pumped up like a champion battle theme should. Someone in a previous sage thread said something about incorporating the game intro theme, what happened to that?
That little pokeman theme reprise in the middle is pretty rad though.
Completely agree. There is too much buildup in this song, with not enough payoff. The pokeman reprise is the only thing that is reminiscent of a champion theme, since it's the only high energy part of the song.
The song should've been composed around the pokeman theme, using it as a chorus, and while the intro to the song is nice, it should've been only a few seconds max, just enough to cover the animations of the trainer sprite appearing and the first pokemon being sent out.
>just enough to cover the animations of the trainer sprite appearing and the first pokemon being sent out.
THIS. A lot of games in general overlook stuff like this, but it's a detail that really adds a lot to the player experience. Check how long this usually takes, make the intro that long so the actual battle theme gets going the moment the player gains control. I can really appreciate when a game shows this level of detail, and it can make a good boss fight a great one.
To use non-pokemon examples, the final boss of Okami is a stellar example, as are a lot of the climactic boss fights in Undertale.
he better be able to do something like that with his helmet
thanks anon! allow me to shamelessly share another doodle I made today
penglacier is in dire need of a new sugi, btw
>I don't think most people would be in favor of us changing designs again
I thought the whole point of leaving /vp/ was so you guys could ignore the majority
if that anon meant "can you catch the other two starters in late game" then yeah, probably not. Post-game is a whole other thing. That's almost, bar some serious autism, a definite thing. How it'll be implemented is still up for discussion though.
>do you guys already have an out-of-costume design,
That's one thing that could work but brick break also works because calm mind is introspective like ? and brick break is more assertive like !.
How does that even happen
>Implying the elitist skype circlejerk will let new people in.
They fucking stole the game from us and will never give it back even though it'll fester and die with them. /vp/ was the fucking lifeblood of this project but now it'll just join the ranks of shitty fangames that die before they reach any stage of real development.
I just rediscovered this project after a couple years of not keeping up with it, and I'd really love to contribute some art, though I've only got about a week of freetime ahead of me. If the most efficient way to do that would be Skype, my skype is Smearg.
>I'd love to contribute some art
Do you mean fanart?
Because you don't need to be in the skype to do that, just post it here.
Also if you mean stuff like sprites/sugis isn't it a bit pointless to only join for a week?
It was quite relaxing without sage business
I've been making a prototype from route 9. Tell me how mcuh you hate it
> Sage has been in development for almost 3 years
It's been such a good run (and a shit-show). These threads used to be such a good time. I remember building the wiki and making maps so long ago.
>all these namefags/friends I don't know
am I that old or that new?
As someone who was vehemently opposed to moving the project off /vp/ even since the skype days, I can at least appreciate that the desired effect has been achieved.
