So my copy of Pokemon Y just arrived and I haven't played Pokemon since Gen 2. Is it just me or the movement is really, really clunky?

You mean the animation or the speed?

It's just you? You're still on a grid even though there's horizontal movement, so maybe that's your problem. It's not "true" true 3d.
I feel the same, so it's not just you

Walking/running around mostly, at least in comparison to other 3DS games like Animal Crossing and MH4U

It must be because of >>24949792 said.
You move in "squares" in XY, but when you get the Rolling Shoes you kinda of move "freely", in ORAS you move "freely" just using the Circle pad since the start.

You're still locked into a grid like with the original Pokemon games, it's just hidden by 3d-ness and the option to move diagonally on the tiles. It doesn't feel like other free-movement 3d games because it isn't like them.

Artifacts of still being grid-based in certain situations.

should've bought platinum

Nah, I think that XY has more potential to make a oldfag to like the franchise again than Platinum, which is slow as shit and don't really has a distinguible look (3D Battles and stuff) like XY.
They fixed this in ORAS, but at least the bike has smooth movement
