TPCi stays closer to the script than 4kids does but I think the issue with TPCi is that the script is TOO close, so it makes all of the characters sound robotic and "unnatural". No one really "emotes" when they're talking. Cathcart then backpedals this by fixing it with forced phrases like "I'M SO PSYCHED" and such.

I watched an episode of Black & White on Netflix the other day immediately following an episode of the first season.

I wanted to vomit, it was so bad. The animation style is hideous and sterile, the voice acting is subpar. They need to fire the Pikachu actress for sure, she can't do the voice anymore.

You can forgive Misty to some degree because the show was still relatively new and the writers didn't introduce goal development until AG onwards. Misty could have strongly benefitted from goal development in that Johto slog. At least the OS trio was entertaining. Same thing applied to Brock too.

The writers have no excuses with Iris's development though.

Brock's goal was established in the episode where he joined, and brought up here and there throughout Kanto. All Misty got was her sisters mentioning she "left the gym, vowing not to return until she had become a strong trainer" in episode 7. Nothing about water Pokemon, nothing about type specialization, nothing beyond a vague mention (from another person, even) that she wants to become strong.

The "gym leader" girls had the worst development. Most of Iris' development came from backstory, which didn't do much for her time on the cast because she was still a cunt, who didn't want to show her friends she appreciated them. Misty had plenty of water Pokemon, but her development didn't happen until after she left.

May, and Dawn had collection question so their development was more in your face. I would argue Dawn had the best development out of all the girls. DP was a much her saga as it was Ash's. She even made it to the finals of her first GF, while Ash has been struggling to get even Top 8 in the league. May's development was okay, but some of her wins were BS.

With Brock, with get a quick "I want to be a breeder, not a battler" hen he joins in episode 5, but then in episode 6 there's a pretty long scene where he talks about Pokemon food that establishes what he does and how he knows a lot, and in episode 8 we have him buddy up with AJ and discuss training methods and techniques with him.
He was a background character who mostly existed as the knowledgable dude who could explain shit for the audience, but they established an in-show purpose and goal for him straight away and set him up as someone actively seeking more knowledge and actually gaining something by traveling with Ash and observing shit.

Well, when they have Pokemon eat during the times they show the characters eating, it's pretty much Pokemon Food. Pokepuffs literally replace Pokemon Food at times when they're eating. Plus, the anime has shown normal fruit. It's just that PokePuffs are pretty much meal replacement.
