I never played debug mode, after I tried it the first time, so while I'm sure you can go there if you enable it I just preferred to play in normal mode and that whole side story was barred for me.

Check out the mechanics of Desire Dungeon, I don't think they are perfect for text-only or anything but they are really good and have lots of little nuances to them that make me wish more games would rip them off/innovate from them, even if just text. If you are a software developer, how about going through and cleaning up the hundreds of errors that rpgmaker has already detected? I know a lot of the errors are due to invalid enemy IDs and you can see the reports in the translation files.

Submit it as a patch on the Dev forum.

Fix starting points on town maps, I know that if you portal to some towns you end up outside the map.

The katteban builds though, nowadays they give mojibake when unpacked without Japanese locale (using AppLocale on the archiver helps not), and playing it ... well, depending on your luck it either works somehow (very rare), you get in-game mojibake (rare), or it doesn't work at all (in most cases).

I'd guess that one or more of the files have file names that make the system barf outside of Japanese locale even if you try to do a locale hax via AppLocale or similar stuff. Then again, just a guess because changing the locale was easier for me than thinking about it to discover the cause.

If they have a decent amount of text they won't. Western writing style is drastically different from Japanese that it's blatantly obvious when a game is either originally english or just has a very well-written translation (and even then, translation can't eliminate some things like japanese cultural references).

Take Katawa Shoujo for example. It imitates the anime art style but is clearly written by westerners. No one could mistake it for an original Japanese game unless they weren't even a native english speaker to begin with, or had zero experience with VNs/eroge.

Yeah, this is true. But I think it's more of a reference to the genre's tropes if anything. Mostly all well-known VNs are Japanese and the VN/dating sim/eroge genre has a lot of cliches that come from Japanese games and culture, so it makes sense that even Western games in that genre would be influenced by them.

For example, in Katawa Shoujo, everyone has Japanese-sounding names and the game takes place in Japan. Why? No real reason. Just because Japanese High Schools are so common in VNs that they've become a trope. And all the clubs/student council stuff that comes along with it, and other things like festivals and eating lunch on the roof.

It's all Japanese culture, but it's been co-opted into the VN/eroge genre as a whole because it's always been so prevalent in eastern media that even westerners imitate it.

Well, I think it's also about the fact that western culture (generally speaking) is, as a whole, rather boring compared to Japanese culture for, the purposes of the story.

No school festivals, no school uniforms (for the most part), heck no festivals akin to the Japanese ones in general. And many other quirks that can be incorporated into the story for some enjoyment.

Not to mention that the traditionalist approach of Japanese as far as tradition is concerned means that many plot elements are more ... flavourful, yes, than they would be in any western country.

It's like with TG stories. Sure, can be amusing in itself, but when a changed character can just go to school in baggy clothes and not give a damn, some of the comedy/drama potential is lost.

Princess Sacrifice translator here. Just wanted to give a little update.

Progress has been pretty smooth, I'm about a quarter of the way through the game's files. No real problems have occurred yet, which naturally means I've simply yet to encounter them.

At the pace I've been going, with script editing and possible image editing, the translation is on track for a February release.

Pretty much, yes. Usually when editing anything, not just translations, I like to do one pass to look for grammatical or spelling errors, then another one to check if it could be written better. And of course, when it comes to a game, you have to playtest it. Some games are worse than others because they have a million different variables and routes, with tons of optional text you might never see (e.g. Sengoku Rance).

There's also the matter of trying to get text to fit into the dialog boxes, which can be excruciatingly annoying on some systems, but thankfully PS's system is piss easy to manipulate and add new lines to. It's also very easy to work with when it comes to packing/unpacking, both text and images.

So expect something to go horribly, horribly wrong soon as The Curse rears its ugly head.
