Just pretend you're not dumb and use station orders.
>>
>>187731779
Wiki says there are separate orders for every alert but in my game all the alerts share one order list.
And even when I assign them to defend burrow they just drink in the tavern.
>>
I'm tired of making planned out autism forts, so this time, I'm going for something completely organic an undplanned. What I have is basically one giant open air quarry, surrounded by a network of automined veins. Whenever I need more rooms, I just sqeeze some into the automined veins.

I'm also digging the main quarry deeper and deeper, and I intend to have it go through at least one cavern.
>>
>>187728868
I want to feel those fat moth tiddies
>>
>>187731915
I think you're misunderstanding what is meant by what the wiki says. You know how when you put your squads on duty initially (s t) it goes from "no orders" to "training/active"? You've just moved between two different alerts, one which puts all your dwarves in that squad off duty and one which has (by default) "Train 10". You can create as many different alerts as you like to cycle between, and each can have their own set of orders or even unique orders for every month, just like the default training/active alert.
>>
>>187733764
I am using [m]ilitary screen to set orders, I've made several different alerts, including civilians hiding in burrow and another alert which assigns squad to a defensive burrow, complete with orders to defend burrow every month of the year. However the defend burrow order seems to apply to every single alert for some reason, yet they still just drink in the tavern.
>>
>>187733097
How do you automine veins?
>>
>>187734327

if you designate the visible part of a gem or ore cluster after that, your dorfs will mine out everything they find behind it automatically.

Are you sure that your dwarves have picks and mining labor enabled and can reach the mining designated areas and that those areas are active (brown) rather than just markers (blue)? Are you sure your farms are set for seeds of a sort that your dwarves can reach to be planted this season and that they haven't already been planted and that your dwarves have farming(fields) labor enabled? Are you sure that your workshops have jobs queued up in them and that your dwarves have the appropriate labors enabled for those jobs and can reach those workshops and the materials they'd be working with?

I have no idea. The problem seems to have resolved when the wave of migrants arrived. Perhaps some kind of timer reset? They work fine now.

And yes, I'm sure. I'm not stupid, I played this game for years. The problem abruptly started and ended.
>>
>>187741830
in my experience, dfhack is more unstable now than it has been in a very long time. exactly how often it crashes seems to vary between different worlds. sometimes it crashes every few minutes, sometimes it doesn't crash at all. today, I've had one dfhack related crash. I've tried to bring it up in the general, but people here are very quick to dismiss it, possibly because they're used to defend it against "purists" or something.

the dfhack induced crashes are easy to recognise, because unlike the vanilla crashes, they won't show you the "df has stopped working" popup. instead, the whole game + dfhack will just shut down.

How do you do it?
>>
I make a burrow at the front of my gate, make new alert, assign the burrow and the squad to the alert, and give them defend burrow order for every month of the year. The moment I change from the training/active alert to Defend burrow alert they just turn civilian and fuck off.
>>
>>187745284
Did you set the number of dwarves on the list? I remember it's not intuitive.
>>
>>187745435
Yes I marked them all.
Tried both 10 minimum and 1 minimum and neither works.
>>
>>187745284

Don't assign the burrow to the alert.

>make GateBurrow
>make GateAlert
>set up GateAlert schedules to defend GateBurrow
>assign squads to GateAlert
When their turn on the GateAlert schedule comes up to defend GateBurrow they'll go do that.

Started this embark months ago then never actually played it. Picked it up yesterday and it's a super comfy site. Bottom left corner has the start of a brook and aquifer I can use to make a well, the middle is all mountainous with plenty of stone to dig the main fort in, plus the volcano for fuel and Fun, and the top right is overflowing with iron ore even on the surface levels.

Dragslay? You don't. Only Toady has it, and while he did seem to want to re-release it at one point, he decided that it would be too much work to make it work on modern computers.

There's no real reason to play Dragslay, either. It's literally the predecessor of Armok 1, and therefore also of DF. All you'd get is a shittier DF with infantile humour.

>>187752924
Even if defend burrows did what you thought it would, it wouldn't do that. They would just rush out of the burrow to attack anything in their LoS. The best you can do is get x number of dwarves to stand in a 4 tile radius of a station point (made by creating a note with N), but there's no way to enforce anything like a formation or prevent military dwarves from engaging visible enemies.

we usually have around 100 posters by the end of each thread. I assume this translates to about 20-30, if we take phoneposting and dynamic IP ranges into account.

of course, it's probably fewer than that right now, because of the stagnation and shitposting. hopefully the shitposters get tired and move on. they seem like the sorts to have short attention span.

It really would be nice if we could have dwarves acting more intelligently and/or following player orders better, at least if their discipline skill or their commander's leadership and/or tactics skill is high enough or whatever. As it is they pretty much just have two settings: berserk and cowardly. I don't know about you, but I don't think of dwarves as exclusively berserkers in combat, really what comes to my mind is shield lines.

Yeah, I'm mad because the thumbnail was just large enough that I had to double check and setting aside everything else wrong about that pic, I find myself forced now to wonder why--despite the fact that there are apparently anthropomorphic reptilian sex dungeons in that setting--I am most bothered about it being a distinct vagina and anus, rather than a cloaca?

I suppose I should be happy that I haven't wandered into the areas where this sort of thing is more fervently discussed so as to know why this is apparently "cool" with the "sorta-furry-but-really-just-scaly-what-the-fuck-do-we-even-call-these-degenerates" crowd?

It's nice how the game paints you a comfy scene every now and then. I imagine the dozen or so dwarves toiling away at the tower on the lake, a light cool drizzle breaking the oppressive summer heat as dusk falls, and they stop their work for a minute as fireflies begin to punctuate the creeping twilight with little points of brightness all around them, and the green treefrogs that infest the lake begin crooning and chirping at the darkness...
and then back to the business of hauling blocks up stairs and scrambling along ledges for the next one.
The game says dwarves don't typically appreciate nature, but my headcanon says these dwarves love the sights and sounds of their own little stretch of nature.

Now i just need to pump the water up but i don't really know how to do this..
>>
are the aquifers in the walls or in the floors?
>>
>>187818436
Just build a closed room in front of your pump, then pump from that room, its only 2 zlvl
>>
>>187818545
Some of them are in the wall.
I tried digging into multiple places in the floor but everytime there was damp stone.
>>187818618
So if i basically enclosed the pump the water will go up?
Won't the dwarf who's pumping drown?
>>
>>187818745
I wasn't asking you in particular, I was asking about aquifers in general. Are they in the floors or in the walls?
>>
>>187818745
Anon read the fucking wiki article on pumps, and probably on liquids too, it's not hard

>>187818850
And you read the article on aquifers
>>
>>187818994
Anon, i'm posting here BECAUSE i read the articles about pumping on the wiki and i don't get it.
It says that i have to choose the direction where i want the water to flow, there's no up direction, okay fine.
Then i read the article on pump stack. Oh great that must be how i can move water up.
"The basic functionality is possible because the Output (dark) side of the pump can be built over open space with a machine component located directly below, in this case another Screw Pump. Note that for power to properly transfer, the intake (light) side of the pump must line up with the output (dark) side of the pump on the floor above it through a space in the floor, as in the illustration. "
Like i said in one of my previous post i tried this and it just wouldn't let me place it.
It only wanted to let me place it if i wanted to pump from the north but i want to pump from the south.

Pumps can't pump up. Sorry, anon.

But it says on the wiki
"A Pump stack is a method used to draw water or magma vertically across multiple z-levels requiring a minimum of parts."
"A pump stack minimizes the amount of machinery required to lift water or magma(...)"
Are you sure?

Speaking of worshipping, religions that aren't boring when? Right now you either get a pantheon or a forest spirit or something gay like that, and the pantheons are usually just a bunch of dwarves. I want to worship forgotten beasts and dragons and magma crabs, not some fucker who's supposed to represent them.
Besides that, religion only serves as a happy mood that doesn't do shit all considering moods don't matter at all in the latest version.

Well I'm pretty sure deities will become more involved once the myths & magic update drops, it's a planned feature of it anyway. Maybe you will actually manage to intereact with them directly or they'll give you some kind of benefit for worshippin them, or something like that. I guess they'll also have their own rules, and they might get angry at you for not respecting them, for example if your adventurer worships a god of war, but instead of going to battle decides to retire and live a quiet life in a village, the god might get angry and give you some kind of punishment.

Are you tired o- sorry, is this /dfg/? Am I in the right thread?
Ugh, whatever. Are you tired of consistent test results? Do you want your data to make no fucking sense?
Fear not, we have exactly what you need!

After last test on giant alligators I expected to see metals nicely show material progression against cave dragon. Well, too bad, because ranged combat is more unpredictable than update release date. I've run tests a few times, because to be honest, when after the first one I saw iron performing noticeably better than steel, I thought that I might've fucked up the setup. What you're seeing right now is the last iteration, where I made doubly sure that everything was prepared properly.

Anyway, the choice of specific metal seems to matter less than luck. The enemy might be dead after 3 copper bolts or take 100 candy ones and give you a finger in return. This shit is pure RNG. Maybe with 100x bigger sample size some clear patterns would start to appear, but right now I can only say that copper and silver seems perform somewhat worse than the rest of the metals. However, since the whole thing is so random, unless you have enough steel to make floors and walls out of it, I see no reason to waste steel bolts on unarmored organics.

And another test, this time against gobs.

Against gobs in iron armor, bolts are either crap or great. Silver, copper, bronze and iron bolts perform similarly badly, and steel and candy bolts perform similarly well.
Copper armor however is a bit more interesting. The situation is the same, with one exception - iron appears to have problems with piercing copper. While it's better than silver and copper, it doesn't match bronze, steel and candy bolts.
Wooden bolts were also tested and they haven't managed to kill or seriously injure even one goblin. If you want to very quickly train your marksdorfs, capture some goblin invaders, put them behind fortifications without removing their armor and have your dorfs shoot wooden bolts at them.

To sum up, against goblin invasion:
steel = what the flying fuck are you doing with those wafers > bronze > iron > copper = silver >>> elven dildos

Well moth men exist so if you make them playable you can make a moth fortress

And then fill it with cute moth women
>>
>>187832817
it's easy to learn how to navigate them.

all worldgen forts cover exactly 3x3 embark tiles. the stairwell is always located in the central embark tile. however, all you have to do in order to be able to fast travel to the surface is to be somewhere in the central tile. so you don't have to actually find the staircase itself.

to know which one of the 9 tiles you are in when exploring a fort, you look at your compass. the topmost dwarf fort is the one you're in. the compass will lead you to the central tile, and will tell you when you're standing in it. then, you can just fast travel out of the fort.
>>
>>187833339
Maybe it's because I haven't done much adventure mode recently or I'm retarded, but I never even tried fast travelling out near a stairwell.

That's in line with previous research and recommendations on bolts.

>Metal bolts (except for candy) are universally good against all types of armored and unarmored opponents. Although there are small scale differences between their performance (heavier bolts like those made of silver seem to have higher suppressive ability), these are not enough to strongly recommend one type over the other.

When it comes to unarmored opponents, yes, it seems like any metal will be okay. Although silver and copper seem to be a bit worse than others. Against armor and inorganics, material matters a lot.
Also candy bolts can go through anything you can encounter in vanilla game now.

Not him, but it's clearly stronger than is realistic. Relatively small creatures can bite, do no damage at all, latch on, and then snap your spinal chord a few ticks later with a shake. Animals that do this or something like it IRL (see pit bulls, crocs/gators) don't kill or maim their victims with joint damage, they do it with catastrophic tissue damage at the site of bite, to which any joint damage is entirely incidental.

Haven't played DF in years, and I'm totally blown away that Dwarf Therapist is dead?

How do you guys play? Do you just play an older version? Is there some new utility for managing labors?

>Have the in game menu's improved?

>I used to run pretty complex forts, lots of interdependent industries
That can easily be done without a labor management utility. People did it for years before they existed, and have continued to do so without them for years.
I don't really care how people play the game, but if you're honestly that baffled that it's possible to play without a 3rd party tool then I'd advise you to play without it. You have an obvious deficiency in your DF skillset that you can repair without much effort.

I sense this is a touchy subject (also the dude accusing me of being false flag, I'm seriously not).

What kind of solutions do you use? How do you keep track of things? Maybe I'm a little OCD, but I like to know things like "5 of my dwarfs are miners" "these three threshers are also set for hauling, these 3 aren't". If a utility isn't tracking my labor allocation, then I'd need to do it by hand... which would be time consuming and probably inaccurate as dwarves die or I miscount.

>touchy subject
Not at all. Some people here will get triggered at the idea of people using 3rd party utilities, but like I said, I don't care you play. You expressed bewilderment at the very concept of playing without it, though, which is very different from anon using it because he finds it a more convenient solution. You're basically admitting a large blind spot in your ability to play DF. And there's an obvious fix for it.

>What kind of solutions do you use? How do you keep track of things?
I assign dwarves labors as they enter the map and almost never have to change them. I can see at a glance how many dwarves I have in critical industries just from the units screen. I can see which industries have dwarves spread too thin by monitoring the speed of job completion. If I do an industry expansion I know which dwarves can stand an extra workload because I can see which dwarves are pursuing idle activities literally any time I want. I know what I'm trying to accomplish and know how to do so, and can thus manage my labors with very little effort after a dwarf's "new arrival" status has worn off, because I've already assigned them an appropriate labor before they ever had the opportunity to start working. I don't even use nicknames or custom profession titles, though both are available and both are vanilla features designed specifically to help you track your dwarves and their activity. All it takes is practice and the willingness to get a little personal with your dwarves. I find it's a lot easier and more organic than jumping to a spreadsheet every time you want an extra pair of hands in a farm plot.
>>
>>187878837
Wait. Either fish will populate it or they won't. If it's in a biome that supports fish, then it will probably eventually have them.
>>
>>187877018
Aquifers are an amazing water source, wherever you need some water, you just have to dig a vertical shaft, no need for pumps or super long channels. They are also far better than rivers for waterfalls, if you dig directly from below you get a nice, uniform waterfall in any shape and size you want. With rivers you will get completely differently behaving waterfalls depending on many factors like distance from the river source. Also in cold biomes you have to deal with freezing water.
Breaching aquifers isn't usually that bad, in most cases I can just drop the plug. One thing however really pisses me off in aquifers and it's how they can make a huge chunk of sedimentary layer completely useless.

>(Toady One) There had been a promise to get pet war dogs to travel with squads that you send on raids, rather than having them stay home waiting for their masters. So that's now properly completed. If your vision of dwarves is less about crafting in the mountains, and more about a lone dwarf descending from the hills to attack a village with a pack of a dozen hounds, your vision is now a reality. That's how I tested it, anyway. Five of the dogs were struck down, but the humans will now think twice about whatever it was they were thinking about, that's for sure.
>Along with this, the game now more properly handles babies that are carried off on site raids. There are still a few issues (which I'm not going to handle for the first release). For instance, if a baby is the lone survivor of a failed raid, they will unerringly crawl back to your fortress all on their own. At least they are no longer active combatants. There had been a promise to get pet war dogs to travel with squads that you send on raids, rather than having them stay home waiting for their masters.

Also fixed various issues with cancelling squad orders.

Reminds me about that guy who embarked on a place with two night-troll lairs and a swarm of alligators, and after dying multiple times with armed and trained dwarves, just said fuck it and embarked with like 60, war dogs. It was a good one, wish I'd screencapped it.

Given the state of /dfg/ right now, I've decided to try to boost the quality of content by starting a fort and updating you guys on it, giving you lot a say in major decisions. Of course, that makes the first one what sort of fort it should be. First response (as long as it's not too tricky to find an appropriate embark) get it.

Vegetarian fort.
You can only use wood.

Pick one or both.
>>
>>187924032
Right, so no stone. Does that mean no mining, or just no using stone in crafting? Because one is rather more extreme than the other.
>>
>>187924170
You can mine but you can't use stone.
>>
>>187924242
Okay. Sounds interesting, but to make it a little more extreme I'll be doing it on a glacier. Btw, are ores allowed? Because if not that really limits how far the game can go.

>Glacier
>no stone
I remember my last glacier fort. I really enjoyed making an ice block castle, but the lack of water and wood was challenging early on. I brought a lot of wood in advance (mainly for beds and barrels - no pottery in that version), and probed the caverns early on. Getting a water source set up and securing a small patch of underground wood so workers wouldn't be bothered by the wildlife proved to be critical. Selectively trading for stuff I was missing was very interesting too. Also remember that problem with the boundary between stone and ice - some wonkyness with melting carved stairs occurred. No idea if that
but is fixed by now. I doubt it. Ultimately, the fort got fucked due to some bug with migrant loyalties/affiliation.

Probably one of my favorite forts.

No iron on the map, I'm afraid. I think I'll have to trade for it. Copper should do though, right?

By the way, how do I go about making a magma furnace? I've only got around 200 logs left, and don't want to waste more than I have to on charcoal.

My game just got substantially easier.
>>
>>187946378
any metal mechanism will be fine; just saw you said you had some iron

For furnaces b->e and you'll have the magma smelter/glass furnace/kiln available. Shouldn't need a wood furnace or charcoal with a magma smelter/forge pair.
>>
>>187946378
Yeah, you can make mechanisms from any weapons grade metal, but of those only iron and steel are magma proof. Magma furnace needs one magma proof material and has to be constructed over at least one open space. It won't function until that open space has magma in it.
>>
>>187946860
I embarked with iron bars with my first forges in mind, hoping to trade more to make more forges, kilns, et cetera, but as it turns out, charcoal counts as a magma-safe material, so I'll be using that. I'm pretty sure it counts as wood.
>>
>>187947042
Charcoal isn't magma safe. It isn't even fire safe. The components for a wood furnace, which you were trying to build here >>187946721, don't have to be either. Charcoal won't even appear in the material list for the actual furnaces and forges (require fire safe), nor the magma workshops (require magma safe).
>>
>>187947697
Right, okay. I'll use metal instead, hopefully I have enough iron left for one or two. :/

Yeah, RNG can be great.

Sorry for not posting for a while, I've reached (and solved) a little problem - my Weaponsmith wanted some bones. Bones. In a reanimating biome. I mean, come on dude, why?! Anyhow, I butchered a donkey, and half of my entire fort was fighting it at one point. So, what do I do? There's only one option - create a cave in to destroy it. Worked rather well, in my opinion.

I mean, that weaponsmith is Legendary+5 now, so that's awesome for my militia.

>>
>>187952598
An artifact bronze spear is an excellent weapon. It can kill literally anything in vanilla DF except procgenned creatures made of steel. It's not ideal for zombies, but it can effectively kill them better than any other one-handed edged weapon except perhaps a morningstar or dagger. In the long run, when zombies are the least of your worries, well-equipped speardwarves will be the best thing you could have on hand.

Mmm. I'm still not even a year into the fort, and need to wait for a caravan for iron first too.

>>187953692
Agreed, and it seems like the cavern fauna is all living anyway, so it should dispatch of them rather easily too. Okay, since we're discussing military, there's a few options here, and I'd like suggestions (as long as they don't involve marksdwarves).

Ooh, nice, that last one was great. I've just started a backlog of images and posts, but since the whole point of this fort was to give /dfg/ a say in how it's run, I think that I might stop playing for tonight. I'll probably be on tomorrow, but no guarantees.

On the checklist of things to do soon-ish though:
>Military, headed by the speardwarf with the artifact
>More extensive cavern exploration
>Trial by fire (literally), by learning how to use magma funaces, smelters, et cetera
>Weaponise the magma
>Chew on some lovely candy
>Hand out some candy to the Elves I'm at war with (and the undead)

All I can say is, thank fuck I didn't embark next to a tower this time.
>>
>>187954219

Toady would have to take it upon himself to make underwater sites.

The bummer is that because of the way water physics work there's no way to have air pockets in a non-enclosed underwater structure.
>>
>>187961952
There are two ways. One is the (probable) bug that causes water in a u bend to rise 1z less than it should, the other is to make the only openings to the structure diagonal, in which case water will only rise to the level of the highest diagonal opening.
