Going to make a 3D platformer, eventually.

After auto-rigging and making making some test animations for this guy, I found out that Cinema 4D's auto-rig is not very export friendly, and that FBX export in Cinema 4D is absolute tripe.

So now I've spent the summer learning how to create a somewhat elaborate 3D rig in Maya instead, 100% manually. I sure hope there are faster ways of doing squash & stretch and other rather painstaking processes in rigging. If I manage to get him up and running in UE4, the rig is almost done.

I'm not sure how to deal with having high ambitions while in the early stages and having no network or resources, AND the fact that those ambitions are for a 3D platformer. Nobody's going to stop me, but I would love to get some help, some good mentors, as soon as possible. We are 5 people overall, but we all know just as little, and only I am actively working on anything at the moment. I would prefer to just work on animation, but in this early stage, I'm trying to do everything at the same time - design, rigging, animating, story writing, character writing, even a bit of composing, just to push things in the direction I want.

RigHelper by Nick Dupree. He is pretty talented and has youtube videos describing how to use it. Its easy and free:
https://www.highend3d.com/maya/script/rh-autorig-for-maya

Its good you learned how to do that manually, but its too tedious to continue doing by hand.

I need ideas on this matter.

The protagonist is is completely alone, and I can't move the story forward without dialogue. Since soliloquies are somewhat out, I thought about creating a character to turn soliloquies into dialogues.

A daemon, representing the "voices in the back of the head" of the protagonist, thoughts running in the background. Which form should this daemon adopt?

I thought about these:
1. Adult version of an estranged childhood friend.
2. Black winged angel version of oneitis*.
3. Corpse version of grandfather/grandmother the protagonist didn't get to know.

*Girl the protag is totally into, despite having interacted very little with her.

that's too specific, which means you're either offsetting the tilemap or the character's collision box, check the option in pic related to make collision shape visible and post results
also having every tiles contain collision is not efficient on larger maps, best way is have another tilemap with collision info only, because you only need to know if a tile is passable or not, those are only 2 states. but use it only if you have a problem

hello /agdg/, my friend and I have released a playtest build for our game. it's an autoscroller with color matching mechanics. I've posted progress gifs a few times in these threads before, and now I'm posting a playable demo.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRF9fGNo9oRxwN6YQ7shvssjMHxty2pw-TOCbSfn2QJqjtOxifKBApYPxdijGGBTQu8vU7GrB6eViJd/pub

The download link and a link to a survey are in this google doc. We'd appreciate it if you could give it a shot and let us know what you think. Our target for feedback right now is regarding difficulty. The few people we've had play so far have started to get frustrated around world 4 of the 6 total worlds.

i guess its because it doesnt look like the bullets are really coming out of the gun? plus there's no real feedback for it. you should have the bullets arc outwards from the gun, and maybe make them have some sort of real impact, i think.

I figured out the problem, but not the solution, yet.
The thing is, the when i create a tilemap in the scene the default tile is 64x64. When I change that to 16x16, it resizes the texture, but not the collision shape.

Learn. Pick a goal and break down all the steps you need to get to that goal and tackle them in small, non-intimidating chunks.

Want to learn art? 99% of art tutorials out there are basically "practice these shapes until they're second nature" Why? Because it works. Practice drawing some fucking triangles and circles in different lighting and positions until you can do it in your sleep.

do you literally not understand how to learn things

ok so here's how to draw a hand:
1: look at your hands
2: try and draw what that looks like
3: realize that you've fucked it up, discard it, try again
4: do that over and over
5: you now know how to draw hands, because you have been practicing

it's that simple, you stupid fucker. it's not "magical," that's literally how human beings learn to do things- by doing them, failing at them, and then trying again.

changing the cell size only change the "cell size", it does not resize the original tileset, if your tile is 64x64 it will bleed and cover more than one cell (but still only count as one cell, good for wall tiles that should be higher), make the tileset match the size of your cells, you can resize sprites to make them fit in 16x16 but will still retain quality when you zoom in (may show up only in game)

That was a set piece used by Saints row 3. It absolutely works in that situation. It doesn't really work in the other situations as it's just a song being played on the radio.

It can work, but it needs to be built around. The Eminem song in Black Ops does nothing. Mad World in Gears 3 was misplaced (and the wrong song to use)

By the way, if anyone plans on checking out Saints Row 3, the section we're talking about is near the beginning (less than 2 hours in) and is the only thing worth playing, feel free to refund it after that bit

What's the plan for your game? How are you going to make it stand out from the rest in the same genre?
How long do you estimate is going to take for you to finish? Are you setting deadlines?

In terms of business, do you have money saved for marketing?
What's your sales plan?
How much are you planning to charge for the finished game?

This is getting weirder the more I try to fix it.
It works fine if I use just a branch that's always true.
It works fine if I use a bool I toggle in the editor.
It works fine if I use a bool that flip flops at random intervals.
But it doesn't work if I use a bool that's set to true after a key press. Despite the function firing.
This is too much bullshit to deal with for tonight.

>>
>>187439550
Mobile posting hasnt been working for me for quite a while which is good.
>>
>>187439005
I already checked that. There's some other things linked to that bool being true, which are applied correctly and take place after the particle event.
The whole logic behind it works, the branch takes the path it needs to take, but for an obscure and ominous reason, if the player is the one who changes that bool, then the function does absolutely nothing. Even though it is supposed to.
Also I tried to always spawn the particle but change the spawn count to 0 when the bool is false, but it doesn't work either.
Worst part is I've got the rest of the effect completely working.

I typically use FL Studio because you can master the NES instruments to not be so harsh on the ears.

I wrote the Creature Castle soundtrack in FL Studio using a set of NES instruments for the Harmor plugin.

I can assure you, 100%, that the function is fired upon passing the branch. I've checked it with UE4's breakpoints and it happens. The particle system just refuses to spawn any particles whatsoever, I know it might seems like complete bullshit.
The way it works is simple it just checks if the player is holding down a button when he takes damage, if so, mitigates the damage and spawns some particles.
So basically Event Any Damage > Branch >(true)> Generate Particle Event (if we disregard all the other logic for damage).
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was an actual bug, I've had another issue where Generate Particle Event didn't work if the particle system was using local space.

I'm gonna open up the project again to take a look.

Haha it was indeed. I've tried to make a Zombies Ate My Neighbors-esque game several times now, and that was back when I first started 3D, but I wasn't good enough at modelling to really take on a serious project yet.

There were 3 separate 2D versions of the game as well, one in like 2008 when I was still animating in Flash, once again in 2010 when I first started doing pixel-art (which I got fairly far with), but I didn't like the art-style, or rather, lack of a style.

The most recent 2D iteration (pic related) borrowed alot more from ZAMN graphically

Nah it doesn't sound that bad man. I too am after the chiptune sound, but I'm not good enough at building my own instruments.

I used to use magical8bit for my NES sounds, but the issue with it is that you cannot pitch bend or slide the notes, which sucks.

If you have Harmless, Harmor, or Sytrus, there are NES instrument packs out there. I believe you can emulate them with 3xosc as well, but you have to import a custom waveform.

See (long) webm, in the first instance, the function fires, but "doesn't happen", while in the second it works fine.

Actually you can just set that in the class defaults as auto receive input or in the editor under details as "auto possess player". If you do it in a Begin Play, it'll do it for every instance of that actor you place in the world. So if you want to have some AI possess the same class of character as the player, it won't work right.

It's worth considering making the first level later on once you get all of your mechanics down and smoothed out. That way the player's first level is a good demo of everything and you have experience making the levels.

Backpedal and strafe implemented. The player's legs will either strafe, run, or backpedal depending on which way you're aiming.

Professional gamedev programming (I assume this is what you're thinking of) is for the best of the best computer science students. It's hard, complicated work, and if you're already doing poorly in college then you aren't demonstrating that you're the best.

If it's taken you four months to produce nothing in UE4, that's further evidence that you aren't willing/able to succeed at this.

No matter what, there's going to be a point where you have your rougs away, and the wrok you do has diminishing returns.

At this point, you can do one of two things, since I'm assuming you now have a finished prototype, or early alpha (everything in place, major bugs out, art style started, and the basics of your game ready).

Taking a step back is what you should do, but, it's where you get into the nuts and bolts of it. Is it fun? Is the gameplay there and working? How big do you want to make this? Etc.

If you're far enough along, make a single working level, finish it, polish the ever living fuck out of it until you can sell that sucker. Do the same again for the next level.

Polish, usability, and design are the big things that you will always learn new things in, they're all lifetime studies.

What you learn might be much smaller, but there's a lot to do.

C# is pretty much a subset of C++, it can do quite a bit more since it's more low level, but it's doable.

It uses a python like language to do all of its scripting, which isn't that bad to pick up.

Godot is basically what GMS would be if it was an open source project. They're building funding for a non-profit though, so give it time. The engine is professional quality though, since it was an in-house engine of a game company that got open sourced.

Give it a few years, it's basically the blender of game engines, making the front end pretty takes time.

I've gone through two artists and I don't have enough to make a full main character, and the way the main character moves is a key part of how the game plays
I've talked to some people about it and recently two different people suggested I use generic assets and check the Unity asset store
I'm not using Unity and I'd rather not pay for temporary assets, so I checked the OP for the usual game asset sites
after clicking through and then clicking and dragging and clicking through again (thanks OP) I got to the one site listed that actually does 2D visual assets
and it doesn't have what I want, at all
should I actually go to the Unity asset store? should I go somewhere else? how can I get this shit ship-shape enough to work on positioning and animation implementation and what I want weapons to look like and how I want them to work spatially and all that shit?

>a set up to decide which animation frame to use
I want to change movement to properly align with frame changes. currently the frame changes on a timer, and movement is constant, and it looks like shit, and is really hard (read: time consuming) to code.
I figured, instead of doing them separately, I'd base them off of two things: the current player.state and the last player.state, which sounds a lot easier to code.
>>
>>187477950
Let's just wait for release and see, I won't believe for a second normies and kids will like any of it unless numbers prove me otherwise.

>>187478238
A friend of mine taught me a good lesson with bxfr, mix the beeps and boops with stock sounds for added punch. You can also lower the bitrate on the stock sounds to have them gel with the sounds better.

Good sound design is vital, I recommend a different sound for your character jumping rather than that high pitch beep you got, maybe something like this
https://vocaroo.com/i/s0mhpVnRx0M8

Obviously not this sound EXACTLY because it's from Streets of Rage 2 but it's a damn good jump sound
>>
>>187478149
Why not? I have it in the back of my mind that I'd like to have certain characters be better than others at certain things. This could lead to interesting gameplay where a player can have the choice to intentionally lose a life to switch to a previous character type to move ahead. Of course I'd like to pretend I know anything about game design but I have no problem with agdg proving me wrong
>>
>>187478707
Just as long as weenieman is the only one with that weird delay, but makes up for it with long rane sausage whip, then yeah that's fine. Seeing as mr anime has a short range sword and a speedy jump.

That's perfectly fine.

Finally got some level design done today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIBQazUusuU

I got a little obsessive compulsive about it, since this is the *new* opening of the first stage, and thus kinda important.

Particularly the pattern at 0:08, being the first real "danmaku" of the game. Ended up redesigning the damn thing like 80 times over the course of 3 days. Finally decided it was better to be too easy then too hard on the first stage (as my last demo attested), and just focused on making you move around as much as possible. I guess it's alright? eh.

Amusingly, everything after 0:12 is a glitch, in which several waves get mushed into one. I kinda like it though. Probably gonna redesign it into a proper enemy wave later.

No, they're original. But very influenced. My artist looked to it for reference, but tried to give the wings a sharper, more aggressive shape, and the body a leaner look.

Anyway, stuff to do before demo #2:

>Finish a few new extra enemy waves
>Rebalance a few existing ones, make everything eaiser in general
>Rebalance mini boss fight, and add the new mechanics to it
>Rebalance boss fight, and add the new mechanics to it
>Add placeholder "charge attack is ready" indicator
>Redo the game over sequecne, to fix the glitch where it took too long
>Fix input glitch and rework control config in options menu
>Add 1 time shield from power up carrier, so you can survive a single hit without losing a life
>Additional misc balance tweaks to the new flame thrower, hyper mode, melee attack timing, weapon dps rates, etc.
>Additional misc tweaks to stages including enemy point value, hyper mode recharge rate, etc.
>Other stuff etc.
>Put it all together

Enemy sprites are just placeholders. We're still working concept art for monsters. Trying to nail down just the right Kazumo Kaneko / Mazeran influenced aesthetic for them.

Thanks! The aesthetic I was aiming for in fact was "Dragon Spirit X Metal Black". I'm committed enough to the idea that I even learned to do most of those Taito style distortion effects

I like shmups and have always wanted to make one.

In addition, I just like 2d gameplay better. Spacing is more intense and fun, with more emphasis on pure movement instead of just i-frame rolling/parrying everything like most 3d aciton games.

I don't care about making money, it's a passion project. I only hope that people who share the same passion for the genre will play and enjoy it.

Then, if you have no previous, or very little, programming experience, just get to learning. Find some tutorials and start trying to figure shit out -- online tutorials, proper books, video tutorials -- whatever type of media that fits you personally for ingesting knowledge.

It doesn't really matter too much what specific language/engine/framework you use; everyone you ask will tell you to use a different one, and no matter which one you end up picking there will always be people sperging out about it, so just find something that is recommended for beginners and start learning. There are tons of great tutoials out there for all kinds of languages, frameworks and engines.

It is a long process though. And be warned, if later down the road you want to team up with someone, finding a realiable and compatible person to work with is a million times harder than it would seem. The task of merely finishing a game, let alone a good one, can be a herculean task.

This so much. If you're not going to pay someone for his work, you need to find the Goldilocks zone between him being somewhat capable and open to criticism but also compatible with your personality and someone you'd get along/be friends with.
Competent people with shit personalities, and good friends with no skill or desire to improve are both hell to work with.

>>187482917

>tutorials
you're setting them up for failure already. Tutorials are to help you solve problems, the biggest boost to retention of tutorial information is actually having the problem it helps. if you don't have a game, then there is no problem a tutorial will help you with. Same goes with wiki pages, only read the pages for the problems you're actually having.

so, just like make game. find a tutorial when you need one.

Your best bet is to find someone who has released a couple of projects on their own - collabs count too if they were the sole artfag/codemonkey - but also has no ambition in life.

They're washed up, either perpetually drunk and/or smoking a pack a day, not liable to go anywhere and don't give a fuck. That's the best kind of collaborator.

>so, just like make game. find a tutorial when you need one.
If you don't know anything about making game, how are you supposed to make game?

I think you are considering "tutorials" in too narrow of a sense. Sure, there are a lot of tutorials that like "I'm going to show you how to do X in a very specific way", these are not really the ones I was referring to.
There are loads of tutorials that actually aim to teach fundementals. Tutorials that present a problem or as task, explain everything involved and then give an example of a possible implementation while explaning the reasoning behind it, so that the viewer can follow along the logic and learn not just "oh, if I copy paste this algorithm I can get this result" but rather gain an understand of the underlying thought-processes invovled.
>>
>>187482378
>>187484916
just download unity and watch 50 tutorial videos. try to make a clone of a simple 3d fps.
it will take a month but you will get there.

grind for technical skills (drawing, visual design design, programing) and watch extra credit for general game design knowledge

>read the starter docs https://love2d.org/wiki/Getting_Started
>start making a game, a platformer would be a good start
>if you have NO IDEA what do at all: google "engine-name game-type"
>else, start making the game
>attempt to do something until you have a problem, learn the solution to the problem and implement it
at some point you will have problems like "holy shit i cant fucking understand my code", because you have done it all this time, what is your reaction? Find the solution, whether in your brain or on google, and know, WHEN YOU NEED THEM, you're learning fundamentals. you'll have an appreciation for the things you learn, you'll learn how to learn, and you'll remember everything you learn better because of it.

this is less a matter of how to start making games and more of a matter of how to do things in a smart way at all.

That god damn rotation/animation thing upon play in unity pisses the hell out of me.
Best you can do is open up the idle animation, make a tiny edit to something at frame 1, undo it, MAKE IT AGAIN, UNDO IT AGAIN and then gtfo of the animation window and never touch it again in case it decides to fuck you over again

have a >print("1::TRUTH'D");< at each true branch, and make else ifs that >print("1::FALSE'D");<

optionally put those inside a if(debugThis) and give the class a public debugThis bool that defaults to false, in the case you have 1000 instances of your class in the scene and only want to see the printouts from 1 of them, by enabling it.

might be as simple as the the button press setting the bool true for only 1 frame or something like that
