Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (Speccy screenshot), operating system, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:

Anyone know why my Xbone controller seems to map l-stick and dpad to the same button? Using Retroarch + mupen64 core. You do understand that you can't copyright that kind of behavior in an emulator, right? Project 64 has used 1964 and mupen64 code as reference for a fair number of fixes, and nobody cares. PCSX2 has used Play! as a reference for accurate behavior. This is how emulation is supposed to work.

The difference between mupen64plus and PJ64 is that PJ64's audio emulation and RNG and general timings -- see Majora's Mask, for example -- will be completely buggered for the foreseeable future while mupen64plus is rapidly addressing issues like this. m64p had a LOT of catching up to do, but it is doing so rapidly and also addressing issues that PJ64 has completely ignored, such as correct DMA behavior. The reason why m64p's audio is in such great shape currently is because someone gave a shit and put in the effort. PJ64 needs a similar rewrite, but PJ64 is an emulator where the lead developer runs all his games muted.

It's not ok to just copy code from various sources with different licenses, while disregarding their license/copright and keeping your own. If anybody can copy code and do whatever they want with it, then licenses are a joke.

>Project 64 has used 1964 and mupen64 code as reference for a fair number of fixes, and nobody cares.
They did care. That's why zilmar had to add m64p devs to the copyright. Yet you claim they don't have to do the same when copying PJ64's code? I don't like these double standards.

I don't care if people copy code. But that's pathetic for them to demand being included in copyright, while refusing to add others to their copyright when copying code..

>such as correct DMA behavior.
DMA for what? Because they just copied PJ64's code recently for PI DMA.

>also addressing issues that PJ64 has completely ignored
It goes both ways.

>PJ64 needs a similar rewrite, but PJ64 is an emulator where the lead developer runs all his games muted.
The whole point of the plugin spec is to let other people do some of the work. It's pointless to have a plugin spec if you wrote all the plugins. Audio is on his todo list btw.

I guess this is the closest to a related thread.
Does anyone know how to make PS2 software emulation on a PS3 (using CFW) not look terrible on an HDTV. I wanted to know if there were any dedicated PS2 emulators aside from Cobra (and Cobra integrated into rebug) that may have better upscalling or forced AA. Using HDMI connection it literally gae me hedaches to try playing my old copy of Persona 4 but there are a few games which don't run well on PCSX2 that I really want to replay (Shadow Hearts is pretty inaccurate)

Nope
>>
>>186210039
You can't, the PS3 deinterlacing + upscaling is shit on the software emulator
Only way to play PS2 on an HDTV without it looking too shit is either a TV that has good deinterlacing and upscaling or a dedicated upscaler.

There is a difference between copying a whole module or whole c/cpp and copying 1-2 lines (or 1-2 characters).

Besides, if the actual copyright holder feels their copyright has been infringed, they should file a GitHub issues, not complain on Reddit and 4chan.

Lastly, I don't think emulator devs should be too hung up about copyright. What happens when Nintendo comes after you for infringing on their copyright? They wrote the code originally. Copyright doesn't just mean "you copied these characters". If you create a function that works the same way, you've violated copyright. I don't think PJ64, or any other emulator should go around saying "I own the copyright to the TLBwrite and PI DMA code". I don't think so.

HLE functions can actually probably get away with that, since they aren't actually properly emulating how the console worked, they are inventing their own way of doing it. But I really don't think you can own the copyright to a DMA copy function, if anyone owns the rights, it's Nintendo

Unity by default has widespread microstutter issues on a wide variety of configuration and a wide variety of programs.
I do know it does get worse on configurations with HT or slower hard drive but I have tested without both those things and it only really reduces the issue to a somewhat hard to notice level.
The only unity games where I don't notice stutters at all have like a 5-30 second freeze at some points when I play them.
>>
>>186211378
>There is a difference between copying a whole module or whole c/cpp and copying 1-2 lines (or 1-2 characters).
That's not even a good argument. You realize that a lot of the HLE RSP code was not originally written by them? The m64p devs just did refactoring and added a few ucodes.. Please tell me what significant changes richard made to the HLE RSP.

>HLE functions can actually probably get away with that, since they are inventing their own way of doing it.
top kek. I guess you're unfamiliar with oman..

>But I really don't think you can own the copyright to a DMA copy function, if anyone owns the rights, it's Nintendo
I don't think you can just copy paste other people's code without complying with the rules.

>they should file a GitHub issues
It's been brought up already and they brushed it off. Nobody can file any issues to the HLE RSP even if they wanted to https://github.com/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-rsp-hle .

>Lastly, I don't think emulator devs should be too hung up about copyright.
Why have copyright in the first place? Why demand others to add your copyright?

They shouldn't go around demanding others to follow rules that they aren't following..

To get hype for Mania I want to play Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. When I load the game in Kega Fusion 3.64, however, none of the button inputs work besides the Start button. I've checked my input binds and tried other games to make sure they all work and it's only Mean Bean Machine (as well as the Japanese Puyo Puyo original of said game) that's having the issue. I've tried using both the three-button and six-button controllers in the emulator's config to see if that changed anything and it doesn't seem to. Are there any known issues emulating this specific game? Google isn't bringing up anything

OpenGL
Buffered rendering
Simulate block transfer effects
Rendering resolution: highest your GPU can do without slowdown (probably 10x unless you have an ancient, awful GPU, like worse than a GTX 460)
Vsync, hardware transform, vertex cache
Turn off texture upscaling and deposterizing
Anisotropic filtering 16x
Texture filtering: Nearest
Screen scaling filter: Linear
>Audio
Audio latency: Low
>System
Fast memory
I/O on thread
I/O timing method: Fast
Force real clock sync
CPU clock: as high as you can go without slowdown (probably 1000 unless you're on an old phone or an utter toaster)
Cache full ISO in RAM (unless you have almost no fucking RAM)
Enable cheats (and then go balls deep on 60fps hacks)
PSP model: PSP-2000/3000
Save screenshots in PNG format

You play the PC Version OR the PS1 Version, that's it, you don't need to play both because they're the same fucking game and you don't need one to play the other, they're completely unrelated in that regard.

Of course, to each his own, but there's just no fucking point in playing the PS1 Version.
The only excuse you could have is not enough disk space for the PC Port, in which case you should buy a new HDD asap.

yup. I tried running gauntlet today and it's worse than Glide64.. I prefer wimp GUI's, but I couldn't even find the option to disable frame limiter in logan's.. Maybe I'm just blind, but I doubt i somehow didn't see something that was there.

The UI certainly needs some work. It should show more than the last 5 games. At least do 10 lol..

N64 emulation in a nutshell..

Yes the settings are still bad, but better than before. Azimer greatly improved FAT and also improved his audio plugin (which I believe Logan looked at, for this so-called DMA improvement). It's coming along, although at a slow pace. Can't really expect more for N64 emulation :) .

Somewhere along the line, FAT started causing crackling issues in games where it didn't before. It's more accurate in theory, but it has some serious side effects. Naturally it's enabled by default for almost every game because the alternative was more crackling. That's why RNG is broken in PJ64.
>>
I think that fixed audio timing might be inherently flawed as a concept because some N64 games appear to use slight variations in DMA copy speed for random number generation. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. You can't have the N64 using random DMA transfer rates while also determining these transfer rates using a predictable value. This is why netplay for N64 is a slightly dumb idea, IMO.
>>
>>186248303
>I think that fixed audio timing might be inherently flawed as a concept because some N64 games appear to use slight variations in DMA copy speed for random number generation.
It's not just DMA.. Some games use the COUNT register for RNG iirc.. I am very glad that you now see the light :) .

I'm a bit puzzled as I thought perhaps you didn't care about RNG being broken.

>Fixes everything from Top Gear Rally to Body Harvest.
If there's even occasional crackling, i wouldn't call it fixed. Audio is honestly a joke right now. You have to mix and match to remotely enjoy emulation.. That's just the nature of emulation in general.

>>186248056
>So-called.
I said that because it's not a new improvement. Sure he's doing decent work to improving mupen, but the code has already existed. Meaning Mupen64Plus isn't the only emulator with "good" audio.
>>
>>186249170
>Some games use the COUNT register for RNG iirc.
Which is yet another reason why the count hack is a sublimely shitty approach to N64 timing. It should be an optional enhancement, not the default.
>>
>>186249170
>You have to mix and match to remotely enjoy emulation.
m64p works almost perfectly on 99% of hardware. You don't need to mix and match unless there's something awry with your PC.
>>
>>186252606
>m64p works almost perfectly on 99% of hardware.
top kek.. Audio is still bad. occasional crackling is unacceptable. Totally takes me away from the game.

>You don't need to mix and match unless there's something awry with your PC.
Hardware has little to do with the issues. Especially if the audio sounds better on other emulators. I'd much rather take the time to mix and match, than to tolerate any amount of crackling. You're obviously just more tolerant than some others. Even logan admitted an issue with body harvest.

Admittedly the audio stuttering is gone for me in today's x64 build, but yesterday's x86 build had awful stuttering in various games.

>>186249701
>Which is yet another reason why the count hack is a sublimely shitty approach to N64 timing.
It's done that way because cycle accurate emulation is not a trivial task. There's not much incentive when cycle accuracy would lower framerates in some games, while drastically increasing system requirements. I'm not saying it shouldn't be implemented, but just that I understand why so few would attempt it. You should support CEN64 if that's what you're after.
>>
>>186255836
Project 64 was originally intended to be cycle accurate. In the grand scheme of things, emulating the N64 CPU with reasonable timing accuracy is not really the issue. Cen64 is slow because it uses Angrylion's for its graphics.

>>

I've already said two times: you CAN run the game at 60 fps in emulators. Stop being clueless and search for 60 fps codes, almost every emulator can use them because this is simple a cheat (most of the games will still be 100% playable too, they just run badly because PS1 is a piece of shit). Try a NES emu on a GBA emu on a PSP/GC emu or something like that. I know that I tried this back when I first found out about GBA emulation (that I could emulate a NES emulator through VBA)

So I downloaded PCSXR-PGXP, however the game gets stuck on the first screen (pic) and won't advance from there.

frontend core.ext content.ext
>>
>>186334995
Oh, no, I was asking how the app can load the core to be usable in the first place.
>>
>>186335153
1. Load the core and it's symbols using LoadLibrary() or dlopen().

2. Call the core's retro_set_<something> so that it'll be able to send video/audio frames to the frontend. When you call retro_set_environment() most cores will tell you what pixel format they'll use and what variables it might ask for later so you have to store this somewhere.

3. Call the core's retro_init().

4. Call the core's retro_load_game() and pass the content information (path, data, size, etc).

5. Call retro_run() to make the core do some work (e.g. generate one frame). Display the frame.

Just figured I'd check in on this thread to see if anyone's got a dl link to a complete version of a Project M 3.6 .iso that'll run on Dolphin.

If not, that's fine. I'll build it myself, but I just wanted to check. Also, if anyone has any advice/warnings about this process, that'd be great, too. I'm doing this so that I have a portable, single file that I can bring over to a friend's house where he's building his own emulation box/machine, and his internet can't do downloads upwards of 1 GB without taking upwards of a day and a half.

I checked all the usual suspects, and I couldn't find any completed iso torrent or anything like that (or maybe I'm just blind).

I have a question:

Why is something like OpenEmu so poor in performance in comparison with RetroArch?

I tried OpenEmu with multiple cores and they all exhibit suttering, sometimes very minor so it's not easy to notice (but it still happens).

In contrast, if I use the same cores (by name at least) in RetroArch there's no frame drops, nothing.
>>
>>186373743

style over substance, and ignorant people not knowing what they are recommending.
>>
>>186373743
>Why is something like OpenEmu so poor in performance in comparison with RetroArch?

Probably because you are biased towards Retroarch
>>
>>186375134
I'd use OpenEmu over RetroArch based on convenience. Nice GUI, adding games is no chore at all. If it didn't have these problems I wouldn't be asking here.

Hell I've been looking for other alternatives to those two in macOS as well.

>>186374510
I would think that many people choose to ignore these issues as if they were "normal" or have a harder time noticing maybe. I remember 8 years ago trying to tell people that Kirby Superstar had a laggy intro on many emulators except for SNESGT. It was fine on ZSNES they said.
>>
>>186375610
>I would think that many people choose to ignore these issues as if they were "normal" or have a harder time noticing maybe. I

Don't assume you are 'special' because you can notice stuttering or lag. Most people do. And if they don't, it is more likely means they don't have these issues because their hardware is different than yours.
>>
>>186377414
Yes, most people can notice and they just deal with it or move on. It doesn't stop existing as an issue.

I'm going to assume that the performance issue has to do something with the refresh rate in which case I don't know exactly what OpenEmu asks for.

I still can't understand why Unity is like that. No matter the game, it pretty much forced the fans to hit max mode. I'm thinking it might be AO related but then again, I think it happens at every preset setting.
>>
>>186381137
Some of the default shaders and way to handle lighting, shadows, AO etc are shit and they're stuck on a DX9 renderer for the most part, and there's also something about not being able to truly disable most features meaning that a simple game like
e FF9 will run just as badly as something loaded to the brim with relatively advanced 3D stuff.
There's also it being unlocked FPS by default so even small games will kick your fans into overdrive simply because it's rendering tons of uneeded frames.

Fucked up shaders are kind of a huge deal. Texture filtering is moot when emulators can force it. Halo's animations are locked at 30fps, anyway.

I am. Some people really dislike it because:

-They dislike the people involved in the project
-They don't like configuring it, they feel that most standalone emulators are easier to configure
-They don't like the GUI (to be honest I don't love it either)

But personally I find it fairly convenient, dynamic rate control is a godsend.

Thanks for the laugh m8. Occasional crackling != best. N64 emulation's better than that, as bad as it is..

Maybe with Jabo's, but not any other plugin I'm aware of. It will be replaced soon, so I don't think it's a big issue.

not him, but Gautnlet sounds bad on just about any emulator i've tried. If you could fix that game, then even I'd be impressed.

>Maybe with Jabo's, but not any other plugin I'm aware of. It will be replaced soon, so I don't think it's a big issue.

Why should the audio plugin matter? The audio plugin in m64p's is just a "dumb" plugin that forwards the audio samples to the hardware. The emulator core gets the audio right, no magic in the audio plugin needed. That's how it should be.

>Will the extra threads help in RPCS3
keep in mind that I've never played on RPCS3, but from what I hear, it kind of depends on the game. Some games use more threads than others. I'm sure there are games that use more than 6, but you should definitely double check on that, before you decide to buy a new cpu.

If RPCS3 is your main emulator of choice, I think buying an i7 is worth it. But Tbh senpai, I'm personally waiting for Cannonlake, although I'm not gaming that much these days. It's going to be even better and it's supposedly coming out next year. I really hope they don't keep delaying it..

Don't forget i7's have better single core performance too. It really depends how much money you have and how resource intensive the games you're running are.

I'm aware, but i actually like coding. these days i tend to focus on optimising. it sucks because a lot of these projects can't compile on msvc out of the box, so i can't be bothered with a lot of them. For example I wanted to check out mednafen-psx just now, but it doesn't compile..

With Jabo's audio, literally every game using Factor 5's music or speech technology is currently broken. So RE2, Tarzan, TWINE, etc.

Body Harvest and Top Gear Rally don't sound right with Azimer's plugin, either. Nor does WDC/Stunt Racer.

>>186428775

>>186429891
>because the plugin handles audio.
Not in LLE mode. Audio processing is handled within the emulator core and/or RSP plugin, and then forwarded to the audio plugin.
>What's the point of having a plugin spec if you want the emulator to do everything?
Audio is a special case. It proved impossible to write an audio plugin that actually worked properly across emulators. Basically nobody complied with the spec, and it had a lot to do with Jabo writing closed source plugins and Zilmar coding in circles to keep them from imploding. Generally speaking, it is best to process audio within the emulator core and send it to a "dumb" audio plugin. And for fuck's sake, don't let the audio plugin control timing.

>It proved impossible to write an audio plugin that actually worked properly across emulators.
Why? Because Azimer kept blaming his own bugs on the spec? I would take his words with a grain of salt. Even Shunyuan's was fine. XA2 crashing is unrelated to spec issues. Jabo's was also stable on each emulator.

>And for fuck's sake, don't let the audio plugin control timing.

Shunyuan's was a nightmare clusterfuck where two copies of Hatcat's RSP plugin were mashed together and then literally every game ran using per-game hacks. It also doesn't work on modern PJ64 because PJ64 kept tampering with things to fix audio disappearing in Jabo's and such.

>>186474768
>even in LLE with FAT enabled, it does the remaining work (like DMA).
It shouldn't. The audio plugin should do nothing but play back raw audio.

I don't think his plugin's the best and the fact that he calls it HLE is laughable, but I like having the option to tweak settings per game. Better than nothing.

Frame delay

From GroovyMAME:

Using frame delay increases system requirements, because it decreases the time that emulation can be completed to meet frame deadlines.

Only GroovyMAME and RetroArch have such an option implemented.

Purple tinted skies in SMB confirmed canon, pure blue sky palette fags BTFO

If you hit pause, everything in the background gets a little blurred.
As opposed to some random vertical lines across the screen.

>As opposed to some random vertical lines across the screen.
I don't get that problem at all in any of the renderer with any setting, I do get vertical stripes if I try to use a break attack though but I can fix that one with merge prite hack.
I can't even say it's an AMD problem since DX11 and DX9 work just fine too.

>I'll literally flush my effort down the toilet
son, Dolphin removed D3D12 support.. Their obsession with "muh clean code" is holding them back.

Now that I think about it, libretro isn't really keen on D3D support, so I'd probably just support Ishiiruka.

So that at least confirms Miyamoto perceived 0x22 as a "purpleish blue" on whatever TV he tested SMB1 on.

Thank you, setting it to 6 does make it more bearable without dropping frames so far.

Now to find a decent shader that doesn't fuck with that.

why can't I get ps1 games to detect analog
I changed these but the option will still be grayed out in the game

Yeah I've tried to even intentionally break it by trying all sorts of stupid shit and nothing got it to break like you described, but the game over sequence does break exactly like you describe but only sometimes which is probably why I've never seen it, I'll just post an issue tomorrow along with a few others including one that is the weirdest shit I have ever seen, imagine that two object share a texture but apparently in that case if those object are at exactly the same distance compared to you then the shared texture will actually become a single texture that stretches between the two (or more) objects, shit's weird as fuck.

Go back to the menu, instead of options, go to controls for that specific core.

Quick menu > Controls > User 1 Device Type > Dualshock

The saddest thing is you're completely right Mesen has almost no real flaws and emulates it's target system extremely well overall.

Nothing, this is one of the reasons it was dropped in favor of the Vulkan backend
>>

PuNES was a bit better than the rest, and Mesen just happens to be a bit better than even that, unless you really care about obscure mappers or OC just stick to whatever you're using

Why not just SAGE anon?

I heard using OpenGL instead of Vulkan fixes the stuttering and unbearable framerate

Shader caching, I've already answered him. Also, you can share the cache with other person, if you're playing for some time it's worth uploading the cache somewhere for people to test

>what makes d3d12 better than vulkan?
Performance. Last time I checked, D3D was getting better performance with ubershaders than vulkan or opengl..

thanks for the laugh man. i needed that

because the performance is so good.

I have cache up to Yusuke's awakening but not one for the rest of the game. Since the new build is so recent a P5 is so long I doubt anyone has a complete cache of the game.

I know that the shader compilation will be much better in the future pr's, but for now would be nice to have a repo with caches from different games. Can you upload your cache? And tell me what game ID/Region/renderer you've used
>>
>>186526350
Only D3D12 is removed though not D3D11, and ubershaders behave better with D3D11

I can't upload the shader cache right now as it's on an external drive that a family member is currently using. The game ID is BLUS31604, region is US and renderer was Vulkan
>>
>>186526350
fair enough. One real example was that Pokemon Snap in Dolphin VC performed much better on D3D12 than any other backend. So I only assume D3D12 should perform better than even D3D11 with ubershaders.
>>
>>186526964
>sure but i was asking about d3d12 specifically,
We'll have to wait on ishiiruka for that, that is if ubershaders don't break D3D12 for some reason.
>>
>>186516297
There would be no emulators.

Is there any way of binding a function to an inexistent button?

I don't want to toggle the menu with any button on my ps1 gamepad but this thing is being a gigantic penis and binding that function automatically to the right analog.
