Most of those 'overhearing people talking' scenes are world-building, or to give the player an insight into the general public's thoughts. But yes, they need to make it easier to FFwd that stuff on NG+. The one advantage of P3P's VN appearance was that you could skip scenes at record speed, which make NG+ more bearable.

It's a shame that combat in P5 is so fast and streamlined, but the social aspects of the game are still bogged down by slow or unnecessary elements. Why does the game waste 10 seconds every time I earn one note in a social stat, when it's already maxed?

All of the volleyball team did as Kamoshida asked. It's not just Mishima's fault, you know. Kamoshida always called people in to get a smackdown or to be harassed. They were aware of this. No one stopped him. No, Mishima didn't, but no one else did either. Mishima was scared, rightfully so, because he would be abused instead. I don't fault someone for not throwing themselves under the bus.
Think of it this way. What if Mishima hadn't sent Shiho?
Two possibilities. Shiho gets punished harder for disobeying, while Kamoshida believes she is lying when she claims she was never told to see him. The other is that Mishima gets a worse punishment that Shiho for disobeying Kamoshida. Why would he do that?

I think you might have misinterpreted what I've been trying to say. I don't think the story is necessarily better is Joker doesn't get saved from jail. This whole chain started because I was just saying that I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting Joker to have a more meaningful sacrifice. I don't mind if Joker stays jailed or not. Each option presents a different theme, and so it's really a matter of preference and opinion.
I'm just saying I think both is fine.
The story doesn't necessarily improve. It just has a different theme. At that point, it's a matter of opinion which one is better, as opposed to a matter of fact.

I suppose that's fine. I'm not against sacrifices by the hero. Hell, one of my favorite VNs is largely about how a hero sacrifices himself, will never be thanked and may even be hated for it, but does it anyway.

But I just think it doesn't work in this context. Atlus isn't saying "do what these guys did" but they are saying "be like them." The message is to not simply give in to those with authority over you like Japanese culture dictates. MC dying was fine because he lived a full life and was at peace, which was the point. P5, to me, says things can be better if you don't simply keep your head down and obey and instead push back.
