Vanguard introduced its own version of the extra deck some years back.
Said extra deck cards had some rapid power creep going on.
Non-boss units (rearguards) were also starting to receive limitations so that you could only use some of their effects once you have one of these extra deck units out.
As said extra deck units got more and more powerful, people realized that all that really matters to win is who gets out their extra deck unit first, and who gets in more hits in the early game before someone can use their first extra deck unit.
So now people just fill their decks with vanilla units that have slightly higher stats than effect units for early defense, only run 1-2 core cards, and rely on their boss alone because again, all that matters is getting first stride (getting to use the extra deck first) and you're basically guaranteed to win
This also led to decks designed to never allow access to the extra deck, as both players need to have a grade 3 vanguard for one player to be able to access the extra deck, so people just started holding off on grade 3s or even never playing one at all so the extra deck was sealed off for the entire game.

Burning Abyss was relevant until the last booster came out, and even still it makes the occasional showing. The decks that pushed it out of contention are Zoodiacs (which are dying now after less than 6 months) and True Draco. With a little bit of Dinosaurs on the side. Barrier to re-entry is high. Unless you built Burning Abyss, in which case you can probably still keep woth locals.

Because the only sane way to go into it is off NS Mimicry + SS Fuzzy into a Skip Force.
Not only is Skip Force unsearchable, but there's no consistent way of searching out Mimicry or Fuzzy without using your Normal Summon first.
And if I have a Skip Force, I'd much rather save it for Last Strix to get out my best win condition instead of jumping through hoops for a relatively vanilla monster that needs to float to be good.

You could also just non-Skip Rank Up an Airraid, but that takes an obscene amount of resources, including two separate Rank-Up cards that can't reasonably be searched.

Yeah they do. They're weak to non-destruction removal and effect negation, which are both really common, and they never printed the hard-hitting Timelords, so they don't have much of a win condition on their own. So you pretty much need to mix them with something else. Darklord is probably the best mix since it gives you more draw power and access to rank 10s. There aren't a lot of other things that have synergy with them due to their summoning restrictions though.

This is to be expected. When introducing a new mechanic they always start by testing the waters with "generic" cards that just provide basic utility to let people get a feel for how said mechanic works.

while this is factually true, the fact that links can make use of literally worthless monster combinations is what pushes them into playability, at least for the better ones.

Think synchro needed higher monster quality than xyz but links can work with pretty much shit quality monsters. For most decks you need an specific pair of monsters to go into a certain synchro level and nothing else in the deck could go into that, then xyz made it so any two monster of the same level (lets say same quality) could go into something useful, but for things like infernity (been playing linkfernity for a while now and it all just makes sense), you couldn't do anything with you most effective effect (necromancer into archfiend) without additional things.

Mathman could get his own tuner in GUB but armageddon could mill a lot of things but nothing to synch or xyz on its own, zephyros needed something else on the field, plaguespreaded another card in hand, etc. Malicious could be useless without a low level tuner or a matching lv6, but now you can just armageddon into malicious and proxy dragon into gaia into firewall easy peasy.

And of course, the fact you can send things on your own field, no matter level or rank or anything, and still get something. Mat-less xyz? Stucked anything? opposing kaiju? token bloat? Now anything can go into something else eventually.

I think it's a significant improvement from pendulums, which basically begged a lot of fucking deck/field space to work and then some more to get actual synergy with older cards.
