Still learning about basic game programming mechanics. I can now implement a state stack, an inheritance based entity system and some other stuff. Currently I'm reading up on simple GUI hierarchies so I can implement an okay menu. Next are shaders and basic OpenGL, after then sound and music, then finally networking.
Made some animated sprites yesterday that just walk around the screen randomly. SFML makes learning the concepts alot easier.

I'm trying to get to setting up the game's database on my laptop, but getting mysql (mariadb) to work is a pain. Mysqld is running, but I keep getting "SQL error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysqld.sock".
>>
>>183575380
use redis, lad
it even has a handy dandy GUI navigator.
>>
>>183575380
Nvm I think I fixed it by making a symbolic link to where the actual mysql.sock lies.
>>
>>183575425
I could maybe, but as far as I know, mysql is sort of the standard and hence probably the easiest to get into, what with all the material around. And from the looks of it, Redis is BSD - my project is GPL so I prefer mariadb for the licensing, too.
>>
>>183575425
Redis and SQL have different purposes. Often they complement each other (or SQL + memcached).

>>
>>183575639
If I had a team of at least 2 nip teenagers helping me at least a little I would have made a game too

check the steamspy,
they have atleast a few thousands of copies sold.

I haven't tried walking simulator or text based adventures or RPG maker games yet, so i don't know about those games.

Not me anymore. It's pretty shitty, you can only rate games if you submitted a game which means that unless you have really good art almost nobody will play your game. I barely got like 5 reviews and 15 plays total. Plus the themes are always boring garbage. Not to mention that even if you get reviews they are useless because this is a throwaway game slapped together in like 48 hours so why the fuck would you even need it reviewed in the first place.

Advice on how to make this better?

The functions on the right process the input of clicking a button. They require some common variables and some variables specific to that button.

I'm thinking I should place the non common variables in arrays of each type (And array for the images, an array for the images, an array for the "node type", etc.

Is that correct?

I didn't want to make a 1:1 clone of SMB so I added the possibility for the player to launch himself where the camera is pointing.
The problem with that is that is that it makes anything like walking on small platforms trivial since you can just propel yourself over it, so I have to take extra care when doing levels so that the player can't "skip" the challenge.

On each function node on the right, check the bottom. There are two variables as inputs. Each "button" (capitol, castle, etc) has some inputs that are specific to the capitol, to the castle, etc.

I was wondering if I should put those in an array, so I would have (for a given input pin), the input of the capitol (0), the input of the castle (1), and so on.

Does it make sense?

I should have said "button" instead of "node" earlier. I'm sorry if it was confusing.

it's not really an issue, you can make a custom table that use index-1 so it's start with 0, the lack of a good way to debug your code is what killed it for me, it doesn't even care about a variable existing and a typo can cause a lot of headache

I've got a question.

I've been developing software for about 6ish years now, but mostly mobile applications, never any games aside from a cookie clicker clone.

Say I wanted to make a game idea i've got, should I invest the time in making lots of small tutorial level shit to learn the basics or would it be better to just pick the things I need in my game, implement those and learn as I go?

I have no problem picking up programming concepts, but should you take a layered approach to learning game dev so you don't pick up bad habits or should I just get stuck in?
>>
>>183586010
Mobile dev is the same as normal dev at least for small to medium projects.
>>
>>183586262
I meant like, mobile applications, not mobile games, sorry that wasn't clear.
>>
>>183585920
Sorry, I'm being unclear.

On the right we have several copies of the same function. Let's focus on the last pin of each of those copies. In the first one we have "Capitol Bright" as input (A Texture 2D variable). In the one below, we have "Castle bright" as input.

My question is, should I make an array storing "Capitol bright", "Castle bright", and the subsequent ones? That way I would have just one variable and I would feed that input pin just by specifying an index.

Or maybe it's irrelevant and it's ok the way it is. What do you think?

Once upon a time there was a programmer who looked for an artist to help in the creation of their game.
One day, there came an individual who, possibly due to lacking the required artistic talent, had no intention in collaborating with them but nevertheless, this individual was intrigued by the work of the programmer so they inquired as to which tools were being used to achieve such a fine result
The programmer, mistaking the question for an offer to collaborate in their game development endeavors, spoke about which tools were used but furthermore asked the person to provide a sample of their artistic abilities.
Realizing the imminent confusion, the indivdual explained that they actually had no interested in joining efforts, but still acknowledged the work was a fine piece so they wished the programmer the best of fortunes in their quest for a partner.
And so, there came the memesters.

>>183591115
Popeye's copyright wore off in 2008. I think he's okay to release a game with the name and characters on Steam. I'm sure if you got in touch with valve and they wanted to add it. They'd help you with the legal part of this and make sure you're okay.

But I have no idea how that process works or even how to begin it. Maybe send an Email to valve/humble/gog and they could get someone to talk to you about copyrights on old characters.
>>
>>183591321
Only en EU though, still has copyright in America.

>On January 1, 2009, 70 years since the death of his creator, Segar's character of Popeye (though not the various films, TV shows, theme music and other media based on him) became public domain in most countries, but remains under copyright in the United States. Because Segar was an employee of King Features Syndicate when he created the Popeye character for the company's Thimble Theatre strip, Popeye is treated as a work for hire under U.S. copyright law. Works for hire are protected for 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter. Since Popeye made his first appearance in January 1929, and all U.S. copyrights expire on December 31 of the year that the term ends, Popeye will enter the public domain in the U.S. on January 1, 2025, assuming no amendments to U.S. copyright law before that date.

I know companies do server hosting for like 20GB a dollar in some places.
Setting up a server would take minutes.
Its relatively anonymous, completely if you use something in Asia and pay in bitcoin.
Don't ask me how or why i know this.

Thanks for the resources tho anon. They will be put to good use

Mine is to earn enough money to do it full time

It's a special shader that needs a bunch of custom pipeline stuff to make it work.
It's basically remapping light/fog into a custom color LUT that the pixel art uses.

Not what I'd call perfect, but I implemented a couple of things:
1. When the wolf chases you, she puts on her angry face and moves faster, maybe too fast (I need to fix her angry walk animation, I noticed a weird thing with her knee).
2. You can stun the wolf throwing stuff at her. After she gets up she will instantly come after you, though.
I still have to tweak this behavior since I just started implementing it. For one, only stones should stun the wolf. Also I should take in consideration the position of the collision (ie. if you hit her head or body okay, but I don't think she would be stunned if you hit her ankle) and the velocity of the item at the time of impact.
Also, when she gets out of the stunned state, I should do a check to see if the player is still close by. If it isn't, then the wolf should look around for a bit before going back to patrolling.
Oh well, adding this also gave me a chance to refactor some code.
the game is still not fun to play and I don't know how to change that

Depends on who's the compositor. You don't need complex musical concepts but you have to make sure you use them with taste.
One of the keys to sounding musical is avoiding any kind of linearity, both in rhythm and pitch.

If the walls are a single polyygon thick, you probably need to turn on backface culling, which "how to" would be different depending on your engine. This ensures a polygon will only be visible if you're facing it, not if you're behind it, but it can also mess up other models that have one-polygon-thick areas.

I just want to make a game that explores the idea of agency for the NPC characters.

All these survival crafting, and mmo games that I play with other people always bore me with how no one strives to create anything beyond biggest base, most guns, highest numbered equipment all for the sake of destroying other players stuff. I want to see what happens when the world evolves on its own without direct input from the player, but can be influenced by it.

Killing monsters near a town may make it easier for the town to expand and upgrade its infrastructure. Or killing people in the town and leaving the monsters alone might eventually have the monsters take over the town.

I basically want to make a 'clockwork world, with some randomness, of NPC's, that a player character can influence the outcomes of'

That's pretty much my game dev ambition.

Changing the direction (90) to other numbers (180, 270, 359, 0) only makes the dust go purely left or right. I just want it to have downwards gravity and no default direction/speed.

Contracting is the real redpill.

Want art? Commission some kid to make it for like 20 bucks per piece and "exposure" - or offer to buy the rights to shit they've already made.

Want music? Same thing.

Programming? Get some tutorial source code and re-skin it with your "original" assets.

Marketing? Get the musicians and artists to shill it for your for free. Make alts and spam forums with it.

You'll be raking in the moola in no time.

Sim Earth was kind of like this, you could only alter things like amount of light hitting the earth, and had to keep things favorable/stable enough for human civilization to develop and flourish until it sent out colony ships

I think the key to a game like that is having very clear mechanics, so the cause/effect is not hidden

Documentation says 270 is supposed to be down. There's really no mystery to this, unless the documentation is incorrect (I doubt it). Have you done basic debugging such as checking whether you're setting the gravity elsewhere as well? Delete the piece of code you're working with and see whether the particles still have gravity.

I want to be like Kuma//War, whenever something big happens in the news, I can slap out a scenario for the game overnight so when people read about it the next morning, articles (might) mention that a game has already been inspired by the events. It fits my addiction to news, but also my hobby of imagining the cause and effect behind events, which can be codified into the scenario too.

So just faff about all day, then in the evening get good and excited about some news, make a scenario until 5am, then put it out for my players and email the news orgs writing about the news, that theres a playable version whatever. I'd be happy with that kind of life.

Just make a shitload of AIs controlling the characters and nature, give the player some god powers, like change the wind, tides of the ocean, floods, decay of food, turn NPC's barren, fruitful harvests, bless the animals so they procedure more resources/reproduce more, all the good and bad stuff a theoretical God might be able to do.

This way you can interfere with their lives and the world but how the AI will choose to deal with those situations is out of the player hands. Spoil them too much and nature might conquer them, be too severe and they might get extinct, who knows...

Pornographic websites, books, writings, films, magazines, photographs or other materials of a pornographic nature are illegal in South Korea, although the law is not regularly enforced. Distribution of pornographic material can result in a fine or a two-year prison sentence. Since 2009, pornographic websites have been blocked by the South Korean government. In 2012 the Ministry of Public Administration and Security released statistics that cited 39.5% of South Korean children having experienced watching online pornography, with 14.2% of those who have viewed online pornography reportedly "wanting to imitate" it.[

Importing pornography to North Korea is harshly punished. Pornography is sold openly on the China–North Korea border regardless of regulations.[16] Despite attempts to curtail circulation of imported pornography, most of the pornography watched in North Korea is currently made abroad.[15] A significant part of pornographic media in circulation consists of Chinese bootleg recordings of poor quality.[13]

There is no access to foreign pornographic websites from within North Korea.

The design of the game I want to make wouldn't bestow deity level powers on the player but rather instead of you visiting the city and seeing those NPC's hammering the same section of wall or building, to look like they are doing work. Actually progress is made on new structures. Too some limit, I could only model and texture so many technology and infrastructure levels before it would get really out of hand.

instead of bitching about people developing or not developing games, please just develop a game or provide critiques on other peoples' developed games

also, don't develop games with the intention of making a profit. that's not a viable strategy unless you actually have a team and a studio. on your own it should be nothing more than passion.

since when was my argument team size? all I said that it was unrealistic to expect to make a living unless you're actually working with people and can make games at a more reasonable pace. that wasnt even my core argument. it's MORE than possible to make a living off of game dev on your own but people who do have been programming for years and had to make a hundred flops before their successes.

Needing experience to make a good game is very obvious to anyone here, agdg has a mix of first time hobbists and fairly experienced devs doing great games that could very well be sold.
Don't think you are hot shit just because you have a team, you are just as likely to fail.

pls respond
>>
>>183621569
of course I'm just as likely to fail but at least we can work at a faster pace.

I'm not even trying to flaunt anything we're doing, I'm just making the point that you should put the game first and foremost and you should have fun making it. of course you should want to make money off of it but I'd much rather release a poorly received game that I'm proud of having made than a hundred successful games that were a chore and not fun to work on/not interesting to me.

maybe I'm getting the people in this thread wrong but when I see people talking about the games theyre making and considering how much money they can make before they even finish a simple prototype, it rubs me the wrong way and I get worried about peoples' motives.

Everyone's just gonna preach their favorite, so it doesn't really matter what we say. For my money, cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ really helped me to understand vital OOP concepts. From there, I read through learnopengl.com to learn how graphics programming works. Or you could just say fuck it and learn Unity. There's certainly no shortage (yet anyway) of real jobs looking for Unity/C# experience, but that stuff just isn't fulfilling to me personally.

Yes you are, making a game I'm proud of and making a commercially successful game aren't mutually exclusive things, you are basically telling 1MAs that their games are shovelware trash that can't be sold.
You are probably very proud of your "faster pace" but that's natural for any new project, when mid development hell hits you will probably change your tone.

Fire emblem on a 3D grid could be cool. There could be a fog of war. Every ships has a certain field of view they can see in. Scout ships could have the furthest, while main battle ships have the least.
Have every shot only move X units per turn. So like a basic gun's shot might move 8 units per turn. If you fire at something within 8 units it will hit that turn, but something 16 units away would need to travel for 2 turns, allowing ships to dodge attacks from far away.

Finally got something to show /agdg/. I got some experience with 2D game development, nothing major. The plan this time was to make a FPS with C++, OpenGL and Blender. I have two scenes (modes), first person and top down, with the latter being more for debugging purposes.

Next goals:
1. cleanup, deviding logic in domains/namespaces
2. rendering text for debugging on screen (fps, yaw, pitch, etc)
3. collision, just 2D, can't jump anyway
4. map generator

>English is my third language and I still know the rules.
It's a good thing anal is my fetish.

>And don't give me the "english is my second language excuse".
There are three mistakes in this sentence. First, you can't begin a sentence with the word and, it's a conjunction. Second, English must be capitalized because it's a proper noun. Thirdly, when ending a sentence with quotation marks the full stop comes before the second quotation mark.

My autism is unstoppable.
>>
>>183624194
You get upgrades, like higher speed, more shields, warps, piercing weapons or anything, and you use those upgrades as ammo. You lose the upgrade once you've fired it.
You gotta think about what you want to fire, possibly taking into account the usefulness of the upgrades per level/enemy-types or what you like to use.
