Also added chains and added a code so they break if they are under too much stress. First I thought of having an interact button to break them but this feels much more natural.

It condenses extra information. There's more things to do on the inside of a house, so you need more space. But when you're walking past the outside, you don't really interact with anything except the door. IRL we compress this wasted time walking by thinking about something else, but in a game players are very aware of wasted time.

This is the same reason why overworld maps are not 1:1 accurate.

There's already a method for retrieving the angle accurately. Vector3.Angle(or Vector3.SignedAngle)

The method also normalizes both vectors internally so you don't need to do that either.

The ControllerColliderHit struct doesn't really provide any useful information. It only stores 1 hit point and that hit point CAN be an interpolated value between 2 faces in some scenarios, which makes it pretty useless.

You're better off rolling your own CC using Physics.ComputePenetration for broad phase collision detection & resolution, then reverting to raycasts for narrow phase collision.

Spherecasts also return an interpolated normal in some cases.

In Unity, if you set a public variable in a script, save it, and decide to change it later, you need to go into the component in the inspector and change it there too or manually reset it to sync back up with the script.

Is there a way to correct this behavior? It's really annoying if I incorrectly set a variable and change it later and forget to reset the component.
>>
>>183312787
Gogem is driven solely by a need for attention, positive or negative. Video games and money are just a means to that end.

He's fairly clever at coming up with strategies to create controversy, but doesn't monetize it because he doesn't really care about money.
>>
>>183312834
Your regular art is not very good, I'm afraid. Give Loomis a try.
>>
>>183312570
Might add that this is a lot more annoying to accomplish than it seems.

In the event where you need detailed ground information, and enough information to accurately separate a map into walls and grounds, you're going to want to use an iterative approach and for very large meshes you might want to look into BSP/Octrees.

>that magifuckingly changes the way that all fucking colors work
That book deals with mixing pigments on a piece of wood. The guy needed a quick nudge to play with the HSV bars in his image manipulation software.

In order to make a short game one does not need to get a degree in art theory.

there's more to the relationship system than "give this person a flower 99x for max relationship meter". There's an underlying "habit forming/destroying" system which is affected by interaction with environment, other npcs, and the player (if an npc really likes the player then the behavior of the npc will drive it to try to "conveniently" be at the store or bar at the same time as you)
Forcing npcs to take a round-about route by physically blocking the main path might introduce them to Joe's Crab Shack which they walk past around lunch time. Even after the main path is unblocked the npc may have developed a habit of having lunch at Joe's.
How you work with/against the habits of the npcs will impact how they feel about you.

https://boards.fireden.net/v/thread/323332998/#323332998

But things like having big name youtubers play the Social Interaction Trainer and just generally not getting the amount of heat he deserves (as in permanent bans from twitter, steam etc) have let him get a really big head again. So like he did in the past he's popping again.

He is making the game free to play which won't affect current owners but new owners have to pay a paid DLC to host their own public servers. Otherwise they will be forced to play only during the designated hours when an official server is running or something.

It's convoluted as fuck, doesn't benefit anyone and was just an attempt to increase sales by moving the game to the free to play category.

If many (many many many, 4 digits at least) objects, do spatial partitioning
Coarse collisions first (like a sphere or even better a big fat bounding box)

Making games in Unity that literally could have been made in Flash and nobody would know the difference. Tried a lot of things, but the only thing implemented today is a height check to not make him run a little too low (i probably should do an up check too, or maybe collision will just kick me out)

Making the stuff look like you want in UE is harder than it should be, i can't seem to find the setting for auto-exposure, even though i turned on the global settings AND the camera settings.

Some freaky materials i wanted to try out from youtube tutorials are also all whack and i ended up not using anything.

Any UE4 tutorials on setting up levels would be appreciated, i'm still not sure if i should start blocking out the map with geometry brush or start making it in Max and importing in.

I don't really care about uniqueness/"fresh"ness. In my eyes, a good game is a good game, doesn't have to be original. Nothing is truly original anyway.

That said, I understand if genericness turns people away. It's not that I intend to just copy other games I see, but I think making a game good at all comes first before trying to make something unique. I mean just look at all the indie games with speshul gameplay that haven't lasted at all.

ideaguy:
A game where you and your party live inside a giant lumbering mech in a ramshackle world. You scavenge to build onto it, adding rooms and features to your mobile base. You can explore the world in the mech, though youll have to fight giant creatures which may destroy your precious rooms and additions. Or you can go EVA to scavenge and solve puzzles with your crew.

how do you determine if a game is fun?

I'm going to add a time trial, some HP bar, a score bar and the eggs having an expiration date (which damages you), each time you tap the chicken some egg popups, obviously the more you tap, the more the eggs popup, maybe some way to exchange from your score towards getting more time.

an easy way to make a game interesting is to just add interaction. what if there were two chickens? what if the eggs interacted with the environment? what if there was a fox that wants to eat your chicken. etc etc etc. just a game where you click on a chicken is not interesting because there's only one thing on screen.

That toggle will move the mirrored bone if it exists.

You need to have a full armature.

In edit mode select any of the bones in the center of the character. Snap the 3D cursor to selection.

Deselect everything, hit the period key to switch your pivot point to the 3D cursor, select your arm and leg bones, Shift+D, right click, Hit 's' to scale, then 'X' then type -1.

The chicken walks around, constantly lying eggs and you have to click on them to pick them up. If you don't pick them up a snake or a fox will eat them. Game can then become progressively harder as the egg rate increases or the enemy starts eating faster and then you could perhaps add some other obstacles in the mix.

I also feel theres more combat potential with a mech than a landcrawler, though its gonna be harder to impliment.

I hate UV mapping cause it's the step that's the most arbitrary and dependent on our current technology for displaying 3d. Modeling is nice cause you're just trying to accurately describe a shape in space. Texturing is fine cause you're just drawing what it looks like. But UVs are this arbitrary constraint.

Yeah I'm just using Studio 1.somethingorother

>No, I didn't. What's yours? Can you bump other players into enemy pellets?

Players have two different types of bullets, ones that make enemies stronger and ones that destroy them. Angrier enemies get larger graphics (which can cause collision damage), fire more bullets and drop more coin items. With friendly fire on, if your 'strong' bullets hit another player ship their coin stock increases, and if a 'destroy' bullet hits the stock decreases.

Have a bit of progress. Been adding features for myself non-stop to make combat work how ever I desire. I made it so I have greater control over how sprites rotate, as well as added a simple detail which lets me set a cap on how many enemies are hit by an attack. Obviously a great sword should be hitting all these guys at once, which made it a good candidate to test that cap. It can be as low or as high as I want it, or set to -1, meaning infinite.

>>
>>183333789
Uh it's quite complete at this point so it would rather long to describe but here's the thing:
Engine works by deferring execution in the loop to a game state which is an abstraction of "how the game currently works", eg menu, gameplay... Everything is a level (including menus), evey input is a player controller... It's heavily UE inspired desu. I don't have an editor yet but it's planned right after I'm done with the VM for the custom scripting language (basically Pascal). This is quite fast since I already wrote several Pascal compilers and have a register-based VM ready.

Nice, only thing i don't like is the custom scripting language.

I prefer C# or AngelScript so I have modular system for both (You can add them at runtime in the editor \ engine to add support for those scripts :P)

My game system is more up to the user, only thing defined is Scenes, which you can inherit from and override (Kinda like a mix of prefabs\scenes in Unity).

>Sounds rad, but if you can hit other players with your bullets, won't this encourage sticking to the edge of the screen, where no one can move behind you and hit you?

It's a twin-stick shooter so that won't be a problem - you can hit enemies from afar, but you won't win if you don't collect coins (you also won't win if you run out of lives). The level design and enemy patterns also constrict the players' horizontal movement, but there's no real penalty for brushing up against walls like in a lot of shmups.

>only thing defined is Scenes,
I see. My levels are scene graphs with each node owning an actor and pointing to child nodes. I can bind components at runtime, this has for an advantage for example to make a component no longer rendered by just removing the render component (rendering is just updating the render component) or changing the controlled actor by rebinding the player's corresponding player controller.

I.e I can add the SFMLRenderSystem to my engine\editor at run time and that allows me to, still at runtime, add a SFMLSpriteComponent to some entity in a scene.

>>
>>183339043
Well you could start with something simple, but concrete. A simple core concept that is fun. Perhaps is something you like or want to try out, a small prototype.
Then you can experiment with adding things to it, just like, add anything and don't let yourself be constricted or limited by general genre definitions.
Some things may work, some may not, just keep experimenting. But always remember the core concept and how added features affect it and complement it.
If you want an advice about something particular, then just ask away. Don't let your knowledge and abilities get wasted.

Well since you asked I'll explain a bit but I warn you it's very bloggy.
Like I said it's an educational project where I'm writing a fighting game engine "from scratch". I used to play a lot of this genre, loved the shit out of VSav but couldn't help but feel disappointed by some of the design decisions, for example execution barrier or speed of some mix-ups which is just retarded. So I wanted to try my hand at doing something which would fit my taste a bit better and play it with my friends to see if I'm actually retarded or not. It went fine but the issue with these games is putting the content in. Configuring sprites and movelists is the biggest pain in the ass so I never had anything playable. When UNIB got released I got in my head to see if I could do some sort of "MBHD" mock up and since I finally got some time I restarted working on it, hence me trying to vector some arcueid sprites.

I actually have concept art from this project I did in college years ago that I was thinking may work for it instead. The old game was supposed to be a candyland hack n' slash but it never got far cause we had no clue what we were doing.
I think it'd work well for a Megaman style game though.

>>183341084
Megaman bosses and enemies have never had very complex AI.
It's all a system of checks and patterns.
Like how that sword fuck from X2 would do his slashes based on if you were in the air or not and repeat the basic pattern over and over.
Most Megaman enemies come down to learning the patterns and exploiting them.

Enginedev on mobile coming through.
You have to reason about your objects as boxes (the values held by the objects) on which you can do actions (the objects methods or functions or procedures or however you want to call them). If an object is a subtype of another object like FPSCharacter is with Player character (in our language FPSC extends PC), this means more actions will be available on the bigger box of FPSCharacter than the one from the PC. Casting PC to FPSC means you are checking whether the pointed object of PC (since its not actually the physical representation but it's location that is stored) can actually act as an FPSC, if this is true then the cast succeeds and you get all FPSC operations available on your character.

I've got a box with balloons and cars in it...

And I've made a car but I want the car to be able to edit properties of the balloons so I cast... to the box?

Which actually checks if car is part of the box? And if it is I can edit the balloons with the car?

You have a reference to a vehicle. It is actually a truck. You do know it is a truck but the parking's limitations only allow you to park vehicles. Once you have your vehicle's reference, you cast it to a truck since you know that's what it is and the cast succeeds. You can now do a loud honk with your truck.

If the vehicle happened to be a bike, you'd be tucked.

Calling "Get Player Character" grabs a reference to that variable, and modifying that reference in the scope also modifies the original (it does not create a copy).

This is different from how blueprint functions operate, which are pass-by-value by default. Modifying a parameter inside a function scope does not affect the variable outside the function, unless you explicitly denote it as pass-by-reference.

Programming is about problem solving, and languages and syntax help express how those problems are solved, but unless you work to understand *why* pieces of code are written as they are, you aren't actually going to improve as a programmer or be able to stand on your own without constantly googling how to do something.

>>183347902

In this context it would be the individual blueprint you're working in.

I'm doing this with controller setup in mind, so currently it moves left/right and close/far with the right stick (second axis which could be remapped for keyboard I suppose) and the camera remains centered on the character the whole time.

Megaman cameras range a lot, but in general they seem to stay centered on the player. I don't know if it works in 3D though.

Sunless Sea meets FTL meets Howl's Moving Castle?

Let me improve on this idea:

Setting: Steampunk Post-Apocalypse Europe

Instead of a Mech, it's a mobile steam fortress. You move around a European countryside, Alps, Snow, Pine Forests; trading with towns and villages and fighting giant leviathans (worms, hydras, crabs etc.). Add stuff to your fortress, trade, collect and complete little story missions at each village.

Maybe throw some procedural generation in there.

>I don't know if it works in 3D though.
Why wouldn't it work? Also to circumvent the problems with aiming you could either add a lock-on or implement an over the shoulder camera that could be either like that at all times or toggleable as a zoom in function.
>>
>>183349324
X7 tried to do the lockon thing and it was awful. An aiming mode could possibly work, but it'd need some good transition to not be jarring.

I'm thinking I may stick to a z-saber type combat for the basic attacks instead of lemons for now at least.
Sword swings seem a bit easier to work with, and the old game concept stuff I have that I'm gonna try to apply to this game uses a sword anyways.
>>
If your game needs a lock on then you just didn't make the shooting mechanics good enough.

It's nothing amazing.
It's using the basic addforce stuff.
I have a gravity multiplier to make the player fall faster/be less floaty.

The most interesting part to it is that I have a thing to keep diminishing the jumpForce variable while applying it again while the button is held down.
That gives it that ability to do short hops or long hops.
Hold the button down for one frame and you get a tiny jump, hold it down for multiple frames and the force eventually reaches 0 and you stop moving up. Of course I cap it at 0 so it doesn't start applying extra force down.

Made a mockup of a house for the stage background. Still needs a lot of cleaning up and tweaks to actually make a tileset out of it though.

We have a resident dedicated shitposter who spends 100% of their time in this thread.

He used to have a schtick where he would post a game he made in source engine and then samefag replies. At least he was kind by always using the same images and stock phrases, so it was easy to filter. Now he just shitposts generally.

"cool n/m good luck" may have been a unique poster cause that bit was at least original the first time, whereas sourceposter mostly recycles old baits.

Not familiar with that, so I don't have a clue on what could be the best approach there. What I usually do is store all the enemies positions, destroy them and then recreate them when resuming from the pause menu.
>>
>>183360643
Fusion should be able to do what you described. I'll try that out and see if it is less buggy.

Late thread, so thought I'd post some MMO progress.
Got a load of stuff done since I last posted, most recently seamless maps for the client, which the console output of the webm sort of shows.
Got some nice new art, too, and have started adding a database. Gonna work in entity interest management next and maybe after that, smoother movement, probably point-and-click style with pathfinding.

I'd love to see more 2D games try lock-on myself. Too bad mine is apparently broken.
>>
>>183344253
>>183362532
lock-on was only ever invented because early 3D was shit, it doesn't make any sense to put it in 2D.

no i dont think i get any US taxation on Steam...
are you asking as an Australian though?
im still a US citizen with a SSN so it might be different for me.

>>
>>183363121

Yeah, it's different.

If you have an SSN you don't need an EIN.
>>
>>183362623
Lock on removes need to aim, and as such reduces the cognitive load needed to play (either leaving it for other elements of the game, or just making the game easier).

2D can stand to benefit from that, depending on the game. The reason it was invented doesn't really matter.
>>
>>183309790

Monster collector and battler, but the monsters are displayed in real time, and it's not just an Ingress clone.
>>
>>183363435
and it increases the cognitive load of keeping track of several unintuivie mechanics related to how lock-on works, whereas aiming is natural and intuitive. git gud
>>
>>183360917
So how do you do things like this? Is it one image for the card and one for the art just behind, or is it three different images put together, or what?
>>

>>183363729
with paint.net magic, aka using layers.

For the in-dept details: You can see 3 layers, I actually only use 2 and the 3rd is the basic icon I did prior to that (with a black box that I removed because its just too damn dark on the scroll ingame.

So you can see both layers here, I added some blue so that things are more visible. For the fragmented second layer I just did an ellipse on the zone I wanted then fragmented it with the tool shown. After some adjustment it did what you see on the second layer.
>>
>>183364105
I meant more for like the whole card, unless I'm misunderstanding what you told me. Not just the art but the coding aspect too, giving it text and that.
>>
>>183364161
oh, yes the card is in multiple part:
- the top with the panel + name,
- the back (+ image in the middle)
- the bottom usually with a description.
Elements are order so that everything is in front of the back & image
>>
>>183364291
are ordered* (or rather, the layers of the ui elements)
>>
>>183332118
I mean you could if you applied yourself and tried real hard instead of acting like an imbecile online.
>>
inventorys are not fun to make
>>
>>183364791
That's because your babby engine doesn't become prepackaged with an inventory system. If you couldn't just click a button to get animations and physics, you'd love doing inventories all day to avoid having to touch those.

>>
>>183365028

>>
I actually don't like inventories and think they're waste of time just like this post
Not really ;)
>>
>>183365243
Depends on your goal really.

If you just want to make a game then yea it's pointless.

But if you maybe have a very specific goal that you could achieve through making an engine. Or if you want to try to build stuff then make an engine.
>>
>>183364898
Why doesn't Unreal and Unity come prepackaged with these sort of basics? A menu and inventory system, maybe even a dialog system?
>>
>>183365452
Maybe cause not all games require inventory.
>>
>>183365504
Not all games require physics either
>>
>>183365563
Physics is an engine system not a game system.
>>
>>183365452
If they did, you'd complain that all games using that systems have "Unity look"
>>
>>183365452
Because these systems are specific enough to your game that you would end up reimplementing it anyway. So it serves maybe shitters and helps with prototyping, but is mostly useless to real devs. Why should the engine developers waste their resources making and maintaining a system that won't be used often?
>>
>>183365801
I can already "feel" Unity games. They're so fucking trash.

If you're using Unity right now, literally buy a gun and shoot yourself. PLEASE.

or you can stop being a mongoloid and actually use tools that streamline UV mapping so much, it's not even a fraction of the whole process, unless you're pulling something like Guilty Gear fuckery.

If a variety of 3D software plugins is too much for you, there's also a bunch of UV packing software (like ipackthat), not to mention unwrapping and packing is also a major function of software like 3D-Coat that makes unwrapping such a piss-easy job, it's not even funny.

It all goes even faster if your topology is not retarded.
