If you defend on a mountain the enemy has to come to you, in other words he has to walk up the mountain. Think about that, it can be pretty fucking exhausting to climb up a mountain right? Now consider the shit you have to take with you, gear and food and munition and the lack of infrastructure. Sounds pretty gay to me, especially when there are dudes dug in above you that have a perfect shot of killing you while you work your ass off.
Also, the enemy can see you before you can see them. Logistics suffer from a lack of infrastructure, you need ammo to kill losers.

Reserve behind the frontline can also aid the position that is under attack very quickly and in an easy fashion. Look up Defence in Depth or Operation Citadel. German Armored Spearheads broke through the Soviet frontlines but never really made any gains because behind the frontline you had another defensive line waiting. It's basically wearing the attacker down until the defender can counter attack. Imagine drilling into a wall and as soon as you break through the wall you hit another one, perhaps a thicker one, until your shit is all broken.

This has been the funnest game of CK2 I've ever played. I started as the King of Poland and became the King of Jerusalem. I intervened in a number of Byzantine civil wars, resulting in Catholic control of their Empire and a collapse of Orthodoxy. However, France fell to Fratacelli heresies, and England, Hungary, and the HRE fell to Lollard heresies. After a failed conclave, we got two wars in a row, the first where Byzantium took Hungary, and the second where I captured the English King and took his Kingdom.

My sleep schedule is still trash from Sweden so I'm up early with nothing to do. I've shelved my Caucasus test for the moment and begun a retest with no secret cults and vanilla demesne levels, to see what the results will be in terms of stability.

I am, however, having something of a problem with the idea of playing a Viking now, at least one which isn't just a simple migratory game. I don't like staying in Scandinavia; the subjugation wars for the kingdoms are too powerful, raiding is incredibly expensive unless you rely on coastal vassals for ship levies, and there isn't much opportunity for something else. The only thing I could really think of is playing as a Norse adventurer in Finland and trying to BLANC the Finns, but even that feels lackluster in comparison to the very volatile and dynamic Lithuania/Prussia start.

With that said, though, I also have something of a problem with moving. I've set diplomatic range at restricted levels, so I don't have very far that I can go, and anywhere that I do travel will almost inevitably be subject to ferocious counter-invasion wars which will make the prospect of migration without immediate conversion all the more questionable. I don't mind converting, but I had hopes to be able to remain my original culture and religion at least for a short while, and I'm annoyed that I won't be able to raid into much more distant territories, like my original Sicily/Baleares plan.

So, to the lad who I thought was lying about that mess with Egypt in the levant, this just happened to me...

What happens when rebels disappear after some time but the province they were occupying remains under rebel occupation and why does this happen? A drop in militancy? It seems unlikely that this would be the case. Anyway, I have observed this happen on many occasions in Bavaria since they can never go and fight off rebels in the exclave of Kaiserlautern. Kaiserlautern remains occupied for years, with the population slowly falling, until the rebels suddenly disappear (the last time this happened, their force was 87×3000 in size. Anyway, I haven't seen it happen so I'm not sure whether they simply go back to normal life, albeit under occupation, or if they disappear completely, lowering the population in the process.

This is why I raised the question of using the same system as dominions use in vanilla HoD for breakaway states that could lead to Kaiserlautern becoming an independent revolutionary state. Unfortunately, this apparently wouldn't be possible and it's never Rheinland nationalists that rise up so there's really no way for Kaiserlautern to become independent from Bavaria. And this is just one province - stuff like this can happen anywhere around the world.
