Guy who likes planes and wants to play DCS here

How much single player content does the game have and and how good?
Which module is the easiest to learn without being babby shit?
Which module is the best in multiplayer without being OP?
How populated and active is the multiplayer?
Are hotas and trackir really truly necessary?
How demanding is the game in terms of hardware?
How much can it be modded?

>single player and how good
That depends how much you want to get into the mission maker. DCS is a sandbox so as long as you are autistic enough to make different missions you will always have content.
>Easiest non-baby
Probably the F-5E or at least it's a fantastic place to start.
>Best multiplayer
The Mirage, it's the most competitive full-fidelity module at the moment. Though you can do some great things with the MiG-21 if you get good.
>Population and activity
It's populated enough but fairly ded, apart from weekends you'll rarely find more than 30 people in a server at once. Best to find a group to fly with.
>Hotas and tracking
No, not at all. Some of the best fighters in /simg/ only have a basic stick. Hotas and all that just make your life easier, being able to spot with trackir especially.
>Hardware
It's nothing crazy but you will need a very good pc if you want butter smooth high frames
>Mods
There are a lot of mods that do great things but a lot aren't shared publicly and ED has broken a lot of them on recent patches. Assuming they go back on this, yes the game can be modded to a decent level
>>
>>183060940

They have 3 strategy games and two tank sims, the pastebins on OP will help ya, this is GT:operation star with shield of the prophet DLC, I like GTOS the most because of the cold war DLC's since I'm not really much of a WW2bab.
Cold war is fun as fuck lad. I'm grinding my teeth waiting for new SABOW/cold war content but the devs switched focus to WW2

>In 1992, a long awaited dream came true for both sides when after negotiations, the Su-27s made a friendly visit to the USAF base in Virginia for mock combat with their nemesis F-15s. It was decided that there would be 2 rounds of dogfights in which the Su-27 would be the tail for one round and vice versa for the other round. First, the Su-27 tailed the F-15 in a mock dogfight, but the Eagle failed to break the tail and disengage the Flanker. In the second round, the F-15 tailed the Su-27. The flanker pilot managed to rapidly reduce speed and did a one and half turn which made the F-15 to shoot past and put the flanker on the tail of the eagle. This meant that the Su-27 clearly won both the mock dogfighting rounds and showed its worth. The America general flew in a 2 seat Su-27 and later on indicated that its maneuverability was better than that of the F-15. It was a sweet victory for the Su-27 of the now Russian Air Force.

It would be nice if it was trucks, or better still bikes, but it's not, and it's all that there is out there. The parts are generic, one brake caliper fits all, but it's not bad for what it is. There's a new version out in a few days, which promises mod support, which might breath a whole lease of life into it, as it does with Eurotruck, but we will see.

They could do with more optimization for sure, as loading times are often long

Sorry
You know how the Mig-21 has the needle which can 'home' on airports? That's called a VOR (or RSBN), it sends out a compass rose that tells planes "Hey, you're in this direction from the airport and you're this far away."

I like it in the mig21 because all you have to do is find an airport that's in a straight line to the target and just fly that straight line (called a 'radial'). I'm not sure if the FC3 planes have it, and if they don't, I don't understand how you're supposed to do things like read AWACS offsets (what good is an offset if I don't have a point of reference?) etc.
>>
>>183138008
That sucks, I really, really like how it's handled in the F-5E and the Mig-21.

I will say that, while I haven't tried the FC3 planes much because I just started DCS, ground attack in the MIg-21 has been the most fun I've had with the game.

I've tried playing air superiority grab-ass and got rekt every time (I'm not great). But ground attack seems to be a really good feature of this aircraft. Can I primarily use it for that in servers and just leave air superiority to the big guys?

>>
>>183143198
Your goal is to 'relieve control pressure.' This means anytime you're having to hold the stick in some position to keep the aircraft in a steady state, you should trim that control command. The goal is to be able to release the stick, and have no change in aircraft performance.

Example, you're having to press slight forward stick (down elevator) to maintain a descent. You should apply down elevator trim slowly. As you add trim, you will find that it takes less forward stick to keep the same descent rate. At some point, you will have added enough trim to release all forward pressure on the stick.

At this point, the aircraft is in trim. Accomplish this procedure all axis (Pitch, Roll, Yaw) anytime the state will remain constant.

Don't trim the aircraft for turns, and don't try to fly the airplane using the trim controls.. remember, the only purpose of trim is relieve you from having to hold a constant pressure on the controls.
>>
>>183143896

Here's something I forgot about trimming in FSX.

If you bind the trim switches to your joystick buttons (you should) make sure the repeat slider is maxed all the way. You don't want any delay in moving the trim wheel, and you don't want this "one press = one click of trim."

Then, press the trim switch for less than 1 second, and see how the aircraft responds. When I trim in FSX I never hold the trim button, it's always a continuous process of repeated clicking until the aircraft is in trim.
>>
>>183145058
samefag again lol.

Really though, this advice applies to DCS, every other sim, and real aircraft.
Until you get really comfortable in trimming aircraft, it should always be an incremental process. Use some trim...wait...use some trim...wait.

Hell, in airliners if you actuate a trim switch for more than 3 seconds continuously the command is ignored. The airplane thinks the switch is stuck!
>>
What the hell, I just found out that I can hold trim button and move joystick where I want it to trim with su-27. But never heard anyone talk about this

>>
>>183145506
Um, it doesn't work like that. Are you talking about the stick to trimmer mode? You hold it and you move your stick to move the trim, and then let go.

Instead of trimming with the hat or buttons, you make your stick the trimmer for as long as you hold the button. Full fidelity planes can bind trim to their ass if they wanted to.

A sim strives to model some/all aspects of how a particular machine/system/environment works true to real-life laws and limitations.
Àrmá could be considered a sim of squad-based infantry combat but the lack of detail and physics modelling of the tanks and planes mean that it will never be accepted as a sim here. /simg/ tends to focus on vehicular simulations
>>
>>183170548
>>183170642
>>183171085
And the squad-based infantry combat isn't that simulation anyway. Do they have proper modelling of bullet trajectory and impact force? Especially when it comes to injuries and people being shot. Arma is a little too 'health bars' at the moment. Even with mods

VBS certainly think its a sim.

I prefer the definition that a simulation constrains its world to produce 'realistic' (verisimilitudinous) behaviour, its not necessarily that everything in it has to be identical to the real world to achieve that.

The truth if you are playing ArmA its unrealistic because you are pressing buttons a keyboard, not running around scared shitless throwing up from the exertion. People would also found months of boredom followed by thirty seconds of terror not a very good return.

In the case of flying and driving, how much fidelity is full fidelity anyway. It should actually be harder to drive or fly because you are missing a vast amount of cues (esp. from motion/vestibular), so where is this all going.

The issue then is really does the thing offer constraints that result in behaviour that seems realistic. If you have a shit flight model that allows you to pull 15G, clearly you are doing something unrealistic and I have to respond in an unrealistic way too. But its not necessarily about the number of switches you can click. You're kind of looking at the wrong side of monitor.

I would rather have a healthy selection of FC3 planes for both redfor and NATO, vs a hand full of full fidelity modules only for NATO with nobody to fight, that also take 5 years a piece.

FC3 models enough to satisfy me. Just like BoS.

I enjoy the combat portion of Digital Combat Simulator, and would rather have more FC3 planes than full fidelity modules, if it means they come out faster and planes that have no chance of being full fidelity would be added.

Either that or fuck 4th gen and just go all in on modeling 3rd gen so that you can actually make planes for both sides.

This is kind of how I feel, I think I ranted about this a thread or so back.

ED needs to decide what direction they're taking the game. They can have some relatively well-modeled planes that are still arcadey or they can have fully-realized full fidelity planes.

Trying to mix both is bullshit, and ED trying to play the best of both worlds has wrecked a good chunk of multiplayer because of it. I'm certain most of us here wouldn't play if it weren't for multiplayer, so the idea that they would brazingly toe that line shows they have either huge balls or tiny brains.

The idea of getting a game with hundreds of aircraft is pleasing to me, but at the same time I don't want to play Ace Combat. There does exist a fine line.

Meh not really. They can have both. Sure as hell not giving up proper simulation for some multiplayer bullshit. That's the preference of course.
>multiplayer
Kek'd. I pretty much consider there is no official multiplayer support until they start implementing dedicated servers and stuff like that.
Also it's server admins' responsibility to decide the level of realism. Too bad the server admins are fucking retards. Maybe /simg/ can host a good one.
I could host a server but I ain't running Windows on my servers let alone a frickin' heavyweight graphical application. If they release a Unix dedicated server that I'll host.

- vietman class: mig-21, f-5, huey, mi-8, b-52...
- afganistan class: mig-21, su-25, mi-8...
- iraq class: a-10c, mig-21, mig-29, su-25, mi-8, mirage, f-15(no aim-120)...
- and asymmetric missions but they won't work in public multiplayer of course

and more interestingly, fictional scenarios so it includes other aircraft from the same "balance class".

as for what scenarios are. that's your imagination. ideas welcome.

Nato vs Soviet Union
No Active Missiles
Destroying clearly marked ground objectives that are in the middle of the battlefield is the only way to win. This makes air quake actually important because its to protect strikers and kill enemy strikers.

That's it. DCS UI sucks so you'd have to have scripts to tell everyone what objectives are left.
>>
>>183249282
oh and fc3 only when absolutely necessary (post mig-21 russian stuff) and with restricted loadouts (no aim-120, r-73, even r-27E*, no GPS guided either before 2000s)
>>
>>183249559
also realistic loadouts. no million most expensive silver bullet weapons on multiple attach adapters and shit like that. weapon price is taken into account: no cruise missiles to destroy a truck.
>>
>>183249439
Oh also, maybe some sort of system that rewards striker pilots. Maybe a live system, where you only get like 2 fighter lives per certain amount of time, but way more striker lives?

I just want 60 players, SU-25's protected by MiG-29's and SU-27's vs A-10's and Viggens protected by F-15's and Mirages.

I want a cold war hell on the battlefield.

but what's needed most is creating an urgency and value to the mission. too bad dcs is shit and we can't have many units doing things. for example massive battles approaching forward bases and cutting off your supply roads so your team has to desperately repel them else no more weapons or fuel = death! then bam surprise fighter. is figter base gonna find time to send figters to help you? they heve their own problems: hordes of strategic bombers. threatening the industry!

Quick question /simg/
For DCS MP, what do you consider an acceptable ping latency?
Most of my online gaming has been FPSs where its possible to reliably get into games below 100 and often below 50. I've noticed people seem to live with higher pings in DCS, but how high is too high?
>>
>>183264258
below ~200 is acceptable imo.
>>
>>183264239
Yeah if the objective is near cities good luck finding ka50s as the weave between buildings.
Also i feel unless the a10 pilot is really good the ka50 can kill 12 vehicles in a really fast amount of time while the a10 has managed to kill one or two.
Of course becauae of blue bias on blueflag all ka50 spawns are 300km away making it a chore to do anything doubly so when fighters are flying above. And the places where the ka50 would actually be useful like the coast or near cities the ka50 cant spawn there.
>>183264258
200 is still ok in dcs. Above that you may start getting killed by missiles that are 10km away from you
>>
>>183264667
Yeah it sucks. But whatever bias they have, they still manage to lose, even half of red coalition never goes on Simple Radio, meanwhile whole blue coalition sits on Simple Radio and communicates with each other. and mostly there are more blues than reds. And reds still manage to win, amazing. I think reds and blues have equal 5 winnings.

It's called your skin. Of course it 'fills up' when you release pressure, you were pushing the blood from the area.

SPO-15 should have randomized signal strength precision as part of the system. I'm sick and tired watching every single Russian jet do "JUST IN TIME" dodges because of the laser accurate countermeasure.
>>
>>183283658
>SPO-15
How can it possibly help you get the proper timimng for a evasion?
>>
what is data link?
>>
>>183284123
When Spo-15 starts shouting that missile is comming at you, signal strenght represents missile's signal strenght
>>
>>183285081
Datalink is data sharing between stuff.

Let's say Ka-50 sharing enemy location to all other ka-50s on ka-50 map
or another example awacs sharing data to su-27/33 about bandits and friendlies(speed, altidude) and can be viewed on screen
>>
>>183285125
That depends on the missile. It can't tell you missile signal strength on a SARH, since you know, it doesn't have a radar.
>>
>>183285442
so a plane with data link is naturally better at detecting stuff and telling friend from foe?
>>
>>183285581
Su-27 will usually win the SARH v SARH fights though, given equal starts.

Its just really nice, everything about it is aesthetic and comfy.
It has better graphics but fewer "features" as such than FSX but I wouldn't go back because the core of it is just so much nicer. The flight model is more lively, so I suppose a tricky approach in poor conditions is more challenging, but it just feels better to fly so that doesn't come across an arbitrary difficulty. I've spent hours just idly noodling around in it.

They might as well make up a whole new fictional aircraft then, because the MiG 1.44 was far removed from being any kind of fighter. To give it weapons and sensors you would have to 100% make up all those systems.

I'd be in favor of lifting some historical restrictions as an optional mission editor flag.

It would still be impossible to do that on the Viggen though... the weapon select knob physically can't select certain weapon combinations.

I tried to limit myself because of the backstory of the mission. The CVBG was supposed to lead an invasion into Crimea so I thought they would still need some later for shooting at C3 nodes and popup targets. If I just fired all of them at mission start I'm sure I would've won anyway.

Since the collapse of the USSR the US has been cleaning shit left behind from it.

With the power vacuum created extremist groups have taken over or created governments who's sole purpose is to destabilize other countries and hit the US where it hurts the most - the economy.

Russia has been fighting the same groups but they managed to keep the media out of the conflicts and the rest of the world was still drunk from the end of the cold war that they not see the upcoming threats and conflicts in the shadows.

Most of the US military pulled out of Vietnam before that and the big "US running" out of Saigon is basically the US military evacuating civilians and people who assisted the US during the war as everyone knew what was coming for them if they stayed.

After the fall around 1.5 million people from Saigon alone "vanished" or"went to work the fields". But we all know what happened as after the Vietnam war more people died to political cleansing than to fighting during the whole war.

installation does take quite a while, but honestly if u wanna play the game all you need is the install and update 1. thats it. if you want to mp youll need updates 2 and 3. they dont add features but slightly improve netcode. if you want update 3 you need to download all 3 updates and the base installer. the bms site is 30 million years old because of simdads. i mean who the fuck still uses phpbb unironically
>>
>>183395345
yeah i alredy grabbed this one along with a slow as shit gog torrent.
Managed to find a link to the bms installer on the steam forums, apperantly sitting through the 30 second bullshit timer and registering on the bms forum was not enough, i would have had to suck someones cock to get access to the part where the installer is.

Anyway, now the fucker is complaining about some imaginary registry entries and refuses to install itself, since its clearly a fucking zipped file i could just use 7zip but for fuckall reasons its passworded. There are tutorial missions but they are tied to the training manual so its up to you. I found them dull.

If you ever do get it working, learn how to do CCRP and CCIP A-G, nothing to it really, and then set up a dogfight against some slow Russian bombers (props) and just practice shooting them down.

You can basically do about the half missions that come up and just learn bits when you need them for mavericks, SEAD etc. which feels a lot less painful.
>>
okay so is dcs good and fun or not
>>
>>183416895
The problem was that i had opentrack installed and the game was taking its nothing as trackir input and ignoring everything else.

So i should make my own practice missions?

>>
>>183418946
Well, you can use their training missions, they aren't badly set up.
For A-A though you can use "Dogfight" and it will rack up whatever you ask on either side however far away you want it. Like I say, big lumbering Russian bombers with no defences are ideal.

The community says you should learn everything from the pdfs in a linear fashion I think if you can do A-A and drop simple bombs, you can go into the campaign and just don't take missions with loadouts you don't understand until you want to. Its far more motivating and organic to go from that point rather than somehow trying to cram like its an exam through a 200 page book.
>>
>>183387547
Hmm, its almost like they haven't released it officially because it isn't ready.

>>183389807
Throttle up as you touch down, should help prevent that, plus if get a bolter you're already throttling up so you can go around.
>>
>>183420294
Yeah i prefer to learn as i go. Not very efficient but much more fun. But ill have a look at the pdf's when i get in the mood. Have no idea what anything does so far, tried clickin on random shit but doubth ill get anywhere without reading.

Which campaign should i do when i get there? There are 3, or i should download something?
>>
>>183420749
Oh, well they are all Korea, they just differ in difficulty but thats campaign difficulty, not mission difficulty.

I'd pick the last one desu, the Norks have already invaded (so they are nearer for you to drop bombs on and shoot at).

There are mods that change the campaigns but I think Korea is the original and still the best. The good ones to experiment with are the Balkans and Israel IMHO.

Don't be discouraged by its reputation avionics wise. Its actually not that complicated, its harder to explain than it is to actually understand and do for some reason. Youtube videos are a massive help in this regard.

sand is at least worth 25 bucks right?
>>
>>183424684
It looks better now but once 2.5 or whatever happens (never) and the caushit map gets updated it will be useless.
Unless you like sand. Then its fine, some variety is always nice.

Well, the trick is to focus on getting right up into the upper part of the slot and applying constant stimulation, not the jackhammer most dipshits go for, and not to go in too hard at first, and instead "warm the oven"

Wait, were you talking about amphibious planes?
>>
>>183422040
Just 120'd a tu something in dogfight, maybe i can get this game to work.
Also managed to target and gunrun a bridge with the tgp/radar. Didnt knew it was a bridge but i guess i now know how to gun ground stuff.
I had agm's but couldnt bring them up so went with the guns... Shit is surprisingly easy.

>m..muh discontinuity
>>
>>183427409
Well, you take out your sectional and plotting device, you lay out a course, get the grid heading, correct for the GM angle and wind angle to find your true course, choose an altitude and speed, include the tail number of your aircraft, fill out a weight and balance sheet and calculate your fuel consumption based on the time you plan to spend aloft, name your points of departure and destination, and file it with a controlling agency

Simple enough, right?
>>
>>183149987
make sure that as soon as you die you press esc and hit abandon ship
the only time the mk 48 is likely to miss is when it goes off near a wreck or your target is very close to you and below you
>>
>>183429298
Also, fun aside, I actually learned how to use a VOR/DME with FSX; when I first started flying, both he choppers had no OBS, and instead relied on GPS

I'm thinking about buying a new DCS module like the little disgusting consumer whore I am.
M2000 or Viggen? I'd like something complicated that can compete with the FC3 craft, but I also love me some ground attack. Also Leatherneck is a name I trust.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>183444943
mirage for fucking sure, The viggen can only do pre-planned strikes, shoots all its load in one run. The mirage has a reason to stay in the air, which is much more useful in all missions you will ever play.
Viggen is nice but the mirage is better.
its 50% off, just get both.

1. click on next waypoint, below discontinuity, to copy it to scratchpad
2. click on discontinuity, this drops the copied waypoint name and deletes the discontinuity
3. hit "activate" or "execute" or whatever your manufacturer decided to call it.
4. airplane flies course from previous waypoint to next waypoint.
