It's difficult, weird and counterintuitive, and it likes taking away your nice things. But that just makes it all the more satisfying when you end up with a powerful build regardless. I promise you I had lots of fun annihilating enemies with piles of neutron cannons after losing most of my previous build in the proximity caves.

Movement styles and utility items are cool. I mainly have an issue with weapons (most of them), energy sources, and general enemy design. They all seem to differ by some minor stat changes that, I've found, never really impacted combat (you just keep mashing F as far as I can tell). Oh sure, some items and enemies are of a higher tier, so they're straight-up tougher and better, but that's all.

Compared to Brogue and Sil, where pretty much every enemy and item you encounter fills a really unique niche... eeeeh.

What do you guys think about itemdest/quality degradation in roguelikes?

I feel like itemdest can work in some scenarios, like I feel that it works quite well in a game like angband. However, I've never found a circumstance where degradation has worked for me. Even in Brogue where I think it works the best out of any roguelikes (i.e. it's simple, guaranteed, and manageable through multiple methods).

Item degradation is not realistic unless it happens to particularly fragile/shoddy items (not a fucking sword) or as a result of particularly brutal or unusual circumstances (acid, for example). (I personally wouldn't play those realistic games, but at least you've got a good explanation/philosophy.)

Therefore if it is implemented it must serve a very specific gameplay purpose. Most item degradation systems just add tedium (or a choice between "thing the player doesn't like" and "more tedium", which is equivalent to tedium anyway).

I'm going to agree with you, even Brogue's take on the feature is just... not exciting. It just means you're hitting a string of keypresses before and after fighting acid mounds, or handling the situation "creatively" (like they simply belong to the "enemy you can't take on yet" category").
It adds another downside to cursed items I guess. But it really doesn't make for meaningful choice, which sucks.

That's leech bite. I got it early on and it stayed for all the game.
For a buffing crown of glory, the most straightforward attributes to increase are strength, vitality, and agility. Typically, you'd want to put more emphasis on strength or vitality than the other attributes, or you could keep them fairly even. Also, having a lot of active attacks can be good for reacting to different situations. For most of the run I had four attacks but towards the end I got rid of a passive and got eviscerate. You gotta know which passive abilities you can benefit from; I think the least amount of passive abilities I have seen in any build was merely one.

You don't train hexes that much, it's only for early-game survival and maybe some mid-game stabbing. Essential necro spells are the ones that give minions (Death channel, animate dead, simulacrum, infestation) plus some killdude spells like Agony or Dispel undead.

Check this morgue for a recommendation for skill training. Note that I'd have gone necro sooner if I had gotten Animate dead in a Kiku book.

Keep in mind that Sp is overall a race that's very powerful in the right hands, but can die very easily. Novice players eventually tab them to their death - even a single ogre mage or vault warden can be lethal if you're unlucky. So play slow and assess threats before engaging.

They also think stair dancing is a problem, not realizing that any "solution" is just going to ruin the game because stairs are the only reliable way to run away from enemies regardless of item drops of character skill and manage difficult enemy packs.

Also conjuration spells are all awful. Only blast caster I've had fun with so far is ice elementalist and that's only because freezing cloud is relatively unique and ice shares school with simulacrum, ANOTHER relatively unique spell.
Other schools are just lame. Fire has no fun spells. Earth is just fire but worse. Wind is gimped because the doublezap gimmick ( why not just have it be as powerful as the other bolt spells and make doublezapping the tactical reward it's supposed to be instead of a fucking requirement? retarded devs )
Another dumb decision is that level 1 spells suck late game. Why is there a limit on spell power again? Oh, so they can give you the exact same spell later on and call it content. The fact that lower level spells have less damage dice per spell power pip is already enough of a limitation.

Summoners don't die at 0HP, they have a buffer of losing maxHP first. Note they lose it fast, so if you get into a bad situation you're probably fucked anyway, but now you won't instadie if you autoexplore into Charm or a vulnerable element barrage. Damage has been upped like 20% around the board so combat is faster, but Ferret didn't want players to get owned by this change, and it seems to work.

Also relic wraiths really spice things up and are completely optional. and the only person I've ever met who didn't like them was that autist Sandman25 who hates risk and wanted Demon to be DCSS in terms of 'make lots of no-brainer decisions and be guaranteed a win' so fuck you, it's not like Demon is all that hard anyway.

Not that much. Think of it as an exploration of AI. Just write some basic agents with basic interactions within a very constrained system and use that as a start.
For example let behaviors be hierarchical, etc. Wanting to acquire thing X and how you acquire it are two different modules. Have the AI prioritize less dangerous (non-combat) acquiring of resources. AI jobs are a way to do this. So write a nice simulator.

It's a roguelike: at worst you have an ASCII graphics,at best it's 2D with tiles. The only thing taking up CPU time is the simulation.
Explore some concepts and keep it fun and you might produce something. Optimize later when you have the concept working.

On the other hand yes, calculating large amount of entities can be a problem. If you have a concept though then you probably have a way to figure out a possible optimization for your specific case.

No amount of planning will help you survive when BoD costs 5, it takes 3 casts just to kill a basic ass frog and you only have 20 mp. I remember how in older versons I could barely survive as a necro by stair dancing enemies into my army of undead from the previous level. "Learning a language" isn't a big part of the development.
Library and tutorial availability is more important.

I can't comment on the book because I learned Python by using it and by trying to do the "right thing" (list comprehension instead of manual loops etc.).
Following the tutorial shouldn't require much knowledge of the language. It's often best to start with practice because you don't know what you don't know - later on you can figure out what all that arcane stuff meant.

Spiny frogs will punch through even heavily armored characters. They're just strong little fuckers. My recommendation is to make sure your stone arrow/sandblast are powerful enough to kill them before they kill you, which shouldn't actually be too hard because sandblast is super broken. Stop playing until version 19.0 comes out "really soon", because it looks like it will more or less entirely change the game into an all-out horror roguelike with fighting de-emphasized, so you might as well not learn things that will get you killed in the new version and go in with a fresh mind.
But if you must have the Lovecraftian dungeon fix, then in general sneaking up on/away from the monstrosities is a good idea. It seems like Rogues can be more viable in fighting in the later phases of the game if you have boosted spirit points, melee ability and have a +3/+4 dagger. Incinerators are fuggin great, so it's worth lugging one around if you find one -provided it has at least 2 or 3 shots.

Also I think I had some kind of minor bug. I opened a door into a dark room, then I lit my lantern. I got a message that said something like "the Severed Hand is aggravated!" before I actually saw the hand a few turns later. Is that supposed to happen? Also the game crashed once while changing fonts, when it got to the font just before the first typewriter one.

I like the changes I've seen so far. It feels like an entirely new game, but in a good way. Please add a cool sound for the Rod of Cloud Minds next time, or just bring the spell cast DOINK sound back.

It's a horror roguelike heavily inspired by Lovecraft. You can get murdered the fuck up even in depth 2, and that was even in the previous version where you could stab Chtonians to death if you were gud and lucky enough. Amazing atmosphere and looks, very solid design.

Had a quick look at the code.

Surprisingly, it seems like the item drop code does not use a floodfill, but rather drops the item at the closest possible cell which can have an item.

This is a bit dumb and should be improved...

So yeah it could possibly have been dropped on the other side of the wall, if that was closer than any non-occupied cell on the original side.

Hm... yeah maybe. It would mean that taking damage would not alert monsters though.

I guess I could change it so that only damage directly caused by the player would alert them (like melee and ranged attacks, and damage spells).

.14 is when the devs went off the deep end, slashing the Dungeon in half and reducing total experience, which discourages suboptimal builds and low-apt, high exp races even further.

from then to now, we've gotten a great variety of enemies with varied (often annoying/untransparent) mechanics, along with some cool gods too, but we've lost our freedom. DCSS has become more a hack 'n slash and less an RPG due to all the level cuts, which completely screws casters and technical builds.

I always identify potions next to a known "refreshing" fountain (before I've ID'ed poison).

That way you should survive poisoning even from level one.

It has already affecting the developing peace.

The number of contributors has been dwindling since Kevin came back.
Now there are barely any new real additions. And the new PRs are mostly fixed or slight improvements or maintenance, done by the same few group of people.

Things like NPCs no one touches it because no one wants to follow Kevin's overengineered and strict rules and directions. Same with fixing the gun accuracy, as it has been stated by him, that it is either fixed as he wants or it won't be fixed.

If this keeps going on, Kevin will scare away all the contributors that are left and the game will die.

We mostly play Crawl here, and complain about Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead; CDDA; and try to understand the new IA update that completely reworked the game. Mystery Dungeon games are usually pretty good, as well, but we don't talk about them too often here.

First more or less decent run. Early Mi-Go on a cultist does wonders. Had a couple of very tense moments (One when char was chased by a phantasm and had to read all his manuscripts in hope that there will be something to shake him off. Got a level up and spirit recovery helped the char to run far enough that ghost abandoned his pursuit. Other when char had to storm a prison-like structure filled with zombies and ghouls. Fire pylon near entrance helped greatly.) but managed to successfully pull myself through. Probably should be more cautious about exploring new rooms. That fungi commander instagibbed char without giving any time to react.

Love the new throwing mechanic.You can throw exactly what you need now without meddling with inventory and wasting turns, which actually makes harmful potions worth lugging around. In earlier versions I just tossed them away after IDing.

As for poisons... Recently lost one character after drinking the pot. Not even full hp and nearby fountain were able to save him. Maybe poison pots could be made non-lethal (reduce hp to 1)? Or change them into disease pots? (It will be nasty but not lethal, although I unsure whether disease pots will have any combat value)

I know it's haram to talk -lites here, but if you haven't played crypt of the necrodancer, I would strongly recommend it. New expansion just came out, and the game in general is pretty stylish and fun. Also spelunky if you like platformers, downwell for an arcade feel.

For -likes, I would recommend dcss or Brogue. Brogue is harder, but is more straightforward. Dcss is the flavor of forever around here, but people have....strong opinions on it. I think it's fine personally.

And extra melee weapons is now also more worthwhile to bring along. Throwing melee weapons is somewhat powerful (and it feels really "cinematic" to me to kill a cultist by throwing a machete at it).

I see you googled the question too, however m is actually the mode change key. It's not scrolling, it's just removing information, so eventually you'll find what's left fits on one screen. It just looks like it's scrolling down. I know this scroll used to work.

There aren't more traps but they're all in actual choke points in corridors instead of randomly sitting in the middle of rooms. The old traps were pretty common but also almost 100% off the time they were really easy to just walk around so you didn't notice them much.
