Typically my rule of thumb with Alarak is if I feel like I will need the extra healing or I'm taking the extra telekinesis range at 7 then I don't go with the lightning quest, if I'm not taking extra TK range then I'll go with the slow. Obviously exceptions like if you're against samuro/vikings and there's a good chance you'll hit 3 people at once easily.

The heal at 1 is actually very underrated, since it stacks with sadism you can easily burst heal for 800 in a fight

Super situational. Most of the time you simply don't need it. With the 25% movespeed and 30% slow you simply don't need the extra speed as you always want to be at max Twin Axes range when in a fight. Making Wrong Place hit potentially twice or on multiple targets is a huge damage boost to careless of frantic enemies. Basically you want to take the slow if you A) Can't hit the center of axes consistently or B) Have a slow fucking team that needs the extra slow to get the kill.

Verdict on Alarak? Seems like once he blows his load (and it's a BIG load) he kinda sucks for the rest of the fight. I guess some talents make him pretty handy in basic attacks, but except for his ult, he has zero protection.

I dunno, I like him in that "kind of difficult, do some slick moves" kinda way, but not sure if I should bother investing more time in him.

They just train their animals and protect their forests. The tactics used by the women are almost entirely skirmishing too. Shoot a bunch of (poisoned) arrows from cover of darkness and retreat. They were immortal and they had divine health from the dragon aspects blessings, as well as healing magic from elune and cenarius, so there really wasn't all that much that their society had to worry about.
