If you haven't gotten into the series yet, then starting with XCOM EW (which on sale you can get for like $10) is a pretty safe bet.
If money isn't an issue, and you want to jump in to what everyone else is playing, then starting X2, WOTC is just fine.

Do not ever start with LW, LW is made for 1% "hardcore" audience, if you're new you'll just get rekt.

It's up to you whether you start with Xcom 1 or 2, if you start with 1 don't bother with EU, EW is just EU with more stuff, there is no point in playing EU.

Xcom 2 has an expansion coming in August, which will work similarly to EW. Sooo, you might want to play EW now, and then buy Xcom 2+War of the Chosen when it comes out and play that.

Using the AWG's Gene Therapy, you can make your soldier larger, with big pecs, and able to lactate nutritious healing milk and literally nurse injured soldiers to health during missions. Move either the medic or the injured person next to the other and they'll Hunker Down and the medic cradles the soldier who starts to suckle. It lasts an entire turn but during that time the soldier is covered and the medic has increased defense from Hunkering and the genetic therapy toughening his back and side skin, After that turn the injured soldier is fully healed and depending on the level of the medic and what upgrades he has other benefits for a turn or two after like regenerating health, increased melee damage, increased aim/dodge/critical chance, etc. And one upgrade lets the medic nurse two soldiers at the same time and confer the bonuses to healthy soldiers by nursing them for a turn.

Installed it to try it out, second mission step outside the landing zone immediately trigger 2 pods of 6 ayyys and a 3rd one "arrives" from the side effectively boxing the entire crew on the 2nd turn of the mission.

I wanted to make a playthrough before the expansion arrives for x2 but this is just dumb.

Both Long Wars are a meme. There is a reason MAGNIFICENCE is a thing. The primary dev of Long War wants you to lose and actively hates the fact that people are capable of beating it because he sees it as a personal failures and like they are beating him personally.

He changed a fuckton of the original Long War JUST to fuck over Beagle who was beating Long War on impossible. Do you understand the level of fucking cuntishness and childishness that requires? The FAQ literally tells you to get good and any failures are entirely your own. The creator is a massive cunt and it is a meme.

All of that said though it adds a lot of great things to both games. It gives a lot of depth to EW and X2 but it also adds a lot of bullshit because as stated before the primary designer behind it is in fact a cunt who can only get off if he is telling someone to get good.

I would still suggest playing it though.

Early on try to go for as much meld as you can. By lategame it gets way harder to safely get it and it is needed for certain soldier upgrades that really can shake things up. Patience is key, but don't be complacent, there are several missions that will pressure you for time so you'll want to not be caught in one mindset for play.

It's usually the reverse for me. Early game, I'm forced to take it slow with my rookies, but after I've got some leveled soldiers I can use my preferred blitz-style tactics (on Classic difficulty).

Yeah, its xcom2 but with quite a few mods layered on top (armours, guns, etc.)
Gun mods and the like may need a bit of tweaking for damage for immersion, but don't overdo it or you'll ruin the balance. Most mods are easy to download through the workshop, but Nexusmods has a decent amount as well if you want to pirate it.

While LW2 might work in a pirated copy, be aware that if you're playing on a toaster you'll hardly manage to play more than a mission at once, if your CPU won't reach supernova it'll be your GPU going crazy and glitching everything or your RAM leaking.

Well, I only really started playing EW about a month ago, so don't take my word for it. The blitz tactics I mentioned were actually developed in EU; it was a happy surprise that I didn't have to change much with the expansion.

Yeah, I have a different way of playing it seems. It seems to be effective, though. IIRC, I beat at least a couple early game terror missions with squads that had 3-4 rookies in them with only basic on Impossible, simply by ignoring cover and moving as a tight group that overwatched every turn.

Needless to say, I'm excited for the Horde missions in the new expansion.

#1 Get someone to Sergeant and build an Officer Training School for Squad Size upgrade
#2 Get a mech, they're awesome bullet sponges for your weak early game soldiers
#3 Satellites, get as many as you can as fast as you can. Cover entire continents so you get the bonus (also, abductions will no longer appear there).
#4 Capturing aliens alive gives you massive research bonuses, and you'll be able to use their weapons after you research them (mid-game)

I did a playthrough with this intention. You'll have to adjust the timers as well as a bunch of other shit because the game is balanced with the assumption you'll be able to kill a pod within at most 2 turns.

No thanks. Simply doing a mass recoloring of units puts me off. LW2 does this, but on a much lower scale than ABA, so I can tolerate it a bit. Additionally they actually introduce new meshes/armors for some aliens so that's a plus.

The way I see it, if you're going to create new types of enemies, actually add something to them instead of just recoloring and resizing/changing the guns. Claus got it right, LW2 got it right, the dude who made the Celatid alien got it right.

To be fair, they are the most dangerous single units ever thought up for XCOM, which is their entire purpose.
The usual method of just stacking health, armor, damage, etc. was never very successful at making one unit extremely scary, but still beatable.

I think the better question is why aren't the Alien Rulers their own factions, if they're meant to be pre-Elder versions of the aliens? Having the Viper Queen and a group of Neonates skirmishing with ADVENT pods on the map would be cool as shit.

Hopefully WotC's multi-turn system will allow mods to make this possible.

I can understand wanting to incorporate a gimmick to sell a DLC pack, but don't you think the "Ruler Reaction" ability (if you will) is quite unfair?
The only reason for it being included, as far as I can tell, is to get a guaranteed kill on one to a couple of your soldiers per encounter, or at the very least putting them on a vacation for a long time.

Not only that, but the regular aliens get to take their turn after the ruler's reactions. You have to make a decision to kill the regular aliens first or put damage on the ruler before it escapes, still potentially putting your soldiers at risk of dying.
The only way around that is if you manage to find or pop the ruler pod before activating anything else, and god help you if you're on a timed mission.
You get some weapons assist your ruler hunting, sure, but they have massive disadvantages like one shot per mag, and you have to devote precious resources to upgrading those over squad weapon/armor upgrades.

I do like the idea of adding in tough boss units, but they way it current is presented with the Rulers isn't executed well IMO. I hope WotC does better.

The Berzerker Queen and Archon King, I think, were just intended to be bioweapons that Vahlen could turn loose against ADVENT, so it would make sense for them. We already know they'll do it at least a little better - Chosen don't have the reaction system and start out pretty weak healthwise, their general progression in damage/health plus the strengths they get across the campaign are what makes them a challenge. You also know all their strengths and weaknesses no matter what and can check it mid-mission, meaning that you have an easier time developing a strategy to beat them despite their multiple possible strength combos.


They can up to 5 strengths but they can only have 2 weaknesses, by the way. so don't expect any Chosen to develop into an exclusive wimp.

Rules are also getting rebalanced in WOTC, as an aside.

No, because they give you specialized tools to deal with them and there are multiple checks to make the fights doable.

The unfair part on the player's side is

>The weapons being unique means if you lose them you'll be at a disadvantage to the Rulers forever

It's one thing to pull the bullshit on ruler reactions but it's another to allow them to use it to escape and deny you the loot. It's the most fucking horseshit thing ever. They should have either been given normal turns or had they were made strong enough to force you to flee and they had no escape options.

The Rulers run away to benefit you. It's balanced with the idea your soldiers will get wounded and possibly close to death after many Ruler turns. Them running away is giving you a break and letting the next fight be easier since they don't recover health.

I just came back from a long break on xcom 2 and I wanted to have some fun, I installed LW2 and many other cosmetic mods and I got my ass destroyed all the time.

all 8 people in my squad has sub 30% aim 90% of the time, which I am fine with usually if I am not outnumbered as fuck every time I try to maneuver my troops to a better location or make some legwork to the objective

Is this normal or am I just too casual

One of the DLCs adds 3 boss variant enemies. Viper king, berserker queen, and archon king.

The upcoming expansion adds the Advent Purifier, Advent Priest, and Spectre plus 3 brand new boss type enemies called the chosen(hunter, assassin, and warlock).

The enemies are pretty well thought out and varied. They each have their unique roles/abilities.

Step 1: Download the Xcom 2 SDK.
Step 2: Open the Xcom 2 Editor
Step 3: Navigate(or just search) for the Advent Skeletal meshes
Step 4: Right click the Advent Witch(only name i remember right now) skeletal mesh, Witch is the avatar, you can look for whichever Advent you want.
Step 5: Export to file.
Step 6: Import the file in your 3d modelling program of choice.
Step 7: Make a cylinder(around 12 sides should be good)
Step 8: Position cylinder on top of Advent's neck
Step 9: Remove the top and bottom of the cylinder(so you're left with a hollow shell like your life)
Step 9: Add a couple of horizontal cuts(3 should be good enough)
Step 10: Unwrap the cylinder, if it's too much of a pain to unwrap it in your 3d modeling software of choice download something like Uv Layout(you'll have to export your cylinder to that program if you do, unwrap it there, and then import it back into your 3d modeling software of choice).
Step 11: I forgot before, also export the Advent Trooper texture that ends in _DIF from the SDK
Step 12: In your 3d modelling software of choice, open the UV Map of your cylinder
Step 13: Load the Advent Trooper texture.
Step 14: Position the cylinder on top of the texture until the texture in the cylinder looks ok.
Step 14: Paint the vertex weights(this is what is known as "rigging") on the cylinder, the top vertices should be weighted 100 to the head, the bottom 100 to the ribcage, the middle 50/50, the other two 25/75
Step 15: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=623181918 do this until you get to the "Setting up Archetype", instead of using the archetype the tutorial says, find the GameData Archetye for the Advent guy you want to replace.
Step 16: Replace the skeletal mesh in the archetype with yours.
Step 17: Open your skeletal mesh.
Step 18: Find the Advent Trooper/Whatever Material
Step 19: Apply the material to your skeletal mesh.
Step 20: Find someone that knows how to replace an existing unit without breaking stuff

There is no shame in copying something that works. It's the hallmark of making a product in the first place. Jake even said that they blatantly looked for the mods that were good and worked well with the systems and just incorporated them. Gotcha, True Concealment and the mod that changed Haven missions to give you a squad of resistance members were pretty much all added and the game will be better for it, especially for console players. Anything that will increase his aim. Overwatch Sniper builds are a little hard to get right. You might actually have more luck making him into a gunslinger instead, no need to worry about ammo constraints means more often that you will hit those six shots per overwatch.

Come on man. Also, holy hell the skills these guys have. Swapping units? Deflecting shots? MAKING COVER? Implacable built in and not even needing to kill things for it, just melee attack them? Volt, Psi storm, Dominate(?), Ghost. It's just insane the amount of utility these guys have. Enemy comes out of no where and is now flanking a soldier? Make cover for them. Or maybe you need to run overwatch, but no cover, make a nice high cover pillar to run it from. Or maybe you want to exploit Advent's silly AI by giving them some nice high cover which would normally have left them flanked. Ghost alone means you can pull off some nasty combos and makes me wonder how long that thing lasts.

It might only do 6-8 damage or so, so while you can hit lots of enemies with it, you need to soften them up first to get kills. Or possibly it only affects the tiles directly adjacent to the Templar.

Mission timers, depending on what the mission entails, have been changed to only start their countdowns when you are revealed, just like True Concealment.

Also no, LW2 doesn't let you control soldiers on retaliation missions, though you can pass a pistol to civilians. There is another mod that gives extra mission types to Retaliation, you can instead get a Haven Defense, where you will get reinforcements of Haven soldiers from the resistance that will join you if they are alive afterwards.

Also, be aware that Firaxis is almost certainly not plagerizing any of the mods' code, but taking the original idea and writing their own implementation of it. Never said otherwise and that is pretty much the crux of the argument. No one can prove that these systems came 100% whole sale from these mods. It's just too generic an idea and easily replicated. Mods don't and should never belong to modders, mostly because you are asking game devs to tip toe around adding features their own game.

I don't think it's that. It's not even modders who are complaining.

I do think you can blame Bethesda for certain ideas about mods, namely that mods are always good and are supposed to "fix the mistakes of the developers." That's really only something applies to Bethesda specifically since they're shitty devs.

Bethesda also did literally steal a mod; they used Fix Lip Sync's method to fix that issue in the SE even though that bug was something they introduced to vanilla in a patch anyway.

Bons already existed in the game code, there's already an element of "true concealment" on UFO missions, and the will system is already obviously different from LW's fatigue system as it's based on a stat sliding down and induces negative effects as opposed to causing physical damage if you bring them anyway.

I didn't think it was that bad. I liked it far more then the normal mission. Though I guess later in the game it got kind of too easy and supplying the resistance members with anything better then standard equipment was kind of poorly implemented.

But yes, the style is only superficial. It is the idea of there being resistance members that are fighting with you and you needing to protect them. That was pretty much the best part of the mod, so it's all we need.

So, about this guy.

It seems to me that he's the most "gimmicky" of the faction soldiers. Both the Reapers and Templars seem to have clear focuses, but this guy's schtick (so far as we've seen) is mostly just "copy the enemy's abilities."

...And frankly, I don't feel like most of those abilities are all that useful. Yanking someone out of cover might be a death sentence for them, but the aliens don't depend on individual soldiers the way we do, it's nowhere near as damaging. And the Alien Ruler Move ability only shows its full potential when you're outnumbered, so it's more of a de-FUBAR tool than a core talent.

And what else do the aliens have that's even worth shit? The only thing I can think of would be the Shieldbearer's buff, which if not overpowered would have to be restricted to the level of another safety net.


Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong. I'd be happy to hear why I'd want a Skirmisher in my team instead of a Reaper or Templar. I'll gladly use him if he's actually useful.

Well, the rip jack is a free move on a three of it's functions. 2-4-6 damage and double against machines and shuts machines down if you don't kill them. Perfect for that sectopod or heavy mec and it can't miss. Ripping out of cover is nice against that very troublesome enemy. They also free melee attack them when they do so, so possible free kill. Free reposition for a possible flank, as well as high ground bonus.

This is all on top of the fact that he can shoot twice if he doesn't move and all his abilties so far seem pretty strong for an overwatch build. He has an ability to take any action on overwatch, which is huge. Also when targeted, gets an action point for the next round, so he could shoot three times if he wanted.

Really, the skirmishers theme seems to be control. He has a bunch of tools that allow for him to do anything, no matter the situation and make it so that no one is safe. An all rounder, sure, but he seems like he will be consistent and that is amazing in a game like this.

I thought the Skirmisher's focus was on doing the most things possible within a single turn. Stuff like getting a grappling hook right away and most his actions only costing a single point.

So far they come off to me as the basic choice of faction soldier. More direct combat focused than a Reaper, more reliable and less likely to trigger pods than the Templar. They're the choice that you really can't go wrong with.
They also have the best looking armour.

Skirmishers are extremely useful and I think you just have a hate-on for them for some inexplicable reason. They aren't even my favorite faction and I still think they have extreme viability.

It also has scouting power which is handy as fuck on open maps
Although I find it odd to have to use a sniper to scout when they should be positioning; two things that tend to be at odds when there's no grapple hook on hand

Funny, I feel that way about the Templar and the Reaper. Really the Ranger was made pretty redundant by the hero classes. Reaper has better stealth, Templar has better melee and Skirmisher has a better Reaper (ability).

Now all the Ranger has going for them is high crit shotgun build. I hope I'm wrong though and their sword build ends up being viable, but I doubt it.

The two times I used Sacrifice were
a)against the Archon king's skyfall
and b) the final mission
1st time it died but saved my gren and specialist and gave my ranger a chance to execute the king
2nd time it tanked the ammo drain bomb on the codex

All in all handy as fuck

Templar seems very offensively focused. Psi is more of a balance between support and offense.

Psions are winds of destruction in general, LW2 in particular. I just had my disciple shut down pod after pod on an invasion.

I think the Reaper will be fine in this pseudo marksman style. They will just need things to ensure they stay in stealth, which they seem to have plenty of. As well as something like Hit and Run, so they can easy flank things and then run away.

I want to be able to lead pods into explosives and then remote start that shit. I am going to destroy so much loot.

God I can't wait to see them all scatter and act dumb because they AI doesn't know how to deal with units that are in stealth. Reminds me of when I was using the Rogue a lot and Sap was completely broken. Pods would activate, but just stand around like a doofus.

I would say that Templar has some nice support stuff too, though usually it seems like they were able to figure out a way to still favor it's offensive style.

Being able to swap places with a soldier is insane. Also, since Templars get a perk that allows them to deflect an attack completely, this doesn't put them at risk, heck, they also get a perk that turns that into a reflect. So that turns a bad situation into something good. They can also make indestructible cover too, which is way too powerful as a defensive and also in a weird way, offensive tool, since you can trick Advent with it in a number of ways, just like how you could use Shieldwall or Sparks to have them take cover that will just go away on your turn. Also a lot of maps with dead zones where being able to just make cover is a god send. Maybe I will actually use Shieldwall in conjunction with it.

twin 60/80% shots is fucking silly

They were probably worried about them falling off and so gave them the best stuff. Though Untouchable was suppose to be for sword spec since most of the time you were putting yourself in danger and that was to counter it.

Yes, their health varies between 2 and 4. At the start you might not one shot them, later on though I don't think they said they wanted HP to go up, but that you would face A LOT more lost, so it becomes about Ammo later, but pistols never get above 3 minimum damage, so they still might not kill A Lost in one shot.

Don't put words in my mouth. I said "full potential", i.e. what the cost of the ability will be balanced against. Outside that specific situation (which good players shouldn't find themselves in very often) the cost/benefit will likely be rather subpar; either too weak or complete overkill (and thus a waste to use).

A similar thing exists with the yank: we already have ways of dealing with covered enemies,many of which have the added benefit of dealing aoe damage. It isn't a total game-changer like the Reapers' stealth.

Hmm... All right, I can see that. A jack-of-all-trades type. I guess he'll be useful for filling in the holes in your tactics wherever your more specialized soldiers can't make it (because they're dead or out of position).

Thinking of it that way, it kind of makes Skirmishers "The Cavalry". That's actually pretty badass.

Maybe they'd be a great core for a "B-" or "C-Team", where they can pick up the slack for your mismatched band of second-liners.

I hope it is a completely seperate classification of Lost, like the Dasher. So you have this really big Goliath lost that has 20 HP, but is super weak to flamethrower, thus giving you a reason to use that Heavy Weapon. Not to mention Flame doesn't make vibrations that the Lost use to find you.

I think it really will depend on what his other skills are. If you had only a partial look at the Sharpshooter and only the pistol side of the tree, he wouldn't look like much.

I'm sure the Skirmisher is hiding a gem in his horde. Hell that being able to do any action out of overwatch is already pretty baller. Combine that with Covering Fire, suddenly when something wants to target you, it is instead getting yanked, or maybe it was literally targeting the Skirmisher, so you can grapple out of their Line of Sight. Even in just it's vanilla state it allows the Skirmisher to choose what target he will fire at from overwatch, so instead of taking that 30% shit shot at the Gatekeeper, you can take that 60% shot against a Sectoid.
