You can use unicode identifiers in said compilers all you want.

Keywords are keywords. If you really wanted to you can use macros to replace them with whatever you want, though.

Working on the Golly Roger, the main asset for the second Montana Wild quest.

It needs texturing/materials, and also a lot of detail work on the cabin, and also detail-debris around the crash (splintered wood, broken crates, that sort of thing), but the overall shape and position is there.

Worked hard on tuning the water shaders so that the depth of visibility is the same for both above water and your first entry into a body of it, and also scaling and positioning the Golly Roger so that it sort of materializes into view as you dive.

There's a little blink when your camera first dives under where everything is visible; that's because it's possible for the camera to clip underneath the surface waves before hitting the actual post-process bounding (since the waves have animated vertices in the shader, but the post process bounding is a box)... not sure how to rectify this, but I know I want to.

so you'd look up chords, scales, chord progressions, and intervals, and also you'd use a musical keyboard or some music-writing software to put stuff into practice and listen to it
I use LMMS, which isn't the best but it's free and it's actively updated and it comes with fucktons of free (albeit kind of crappy) instruments and synthesizer settings to use, and I'd recommend this video series to learn the software https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dYxV3tqTUc

that's an option too, any decent DAW will support VSTs, and most will support soundfonts either natively or through a plugin
DAW: digital audio workshop/workstation, basically software for making music and doing sound design
VST: a type of file that defines a virtual synthesizer or a virtual instrument, along with settings for it
soundfont: an older type of file that defines a virtual instrument, along with limited settings; older and newer versions of the standard have different capabilities and may not be compatible with the same DAWs and plugins

Making good sprites isn't easy. There's not a lot to do, but by the very same token there's not a lot that can be done. You have very little to work with. Look at pic related. It probably takes only seconds to make, but if it hadn't been made just right it wouldn't have been recognizable at all. If his head had been just one pixel too thin, the image would have been ruined. On the other hand, you could draw a pretty shitty costanza by hand and still have it be recognizeable. More resolution is more wiggle room.

I never heard about that. I thought they changed their name because "The WarZ" had a reputation for being one of the single worst games ever made and was the poster child for Early Access scams and they wanted to rebrand to hide from that reputation.

If there are no games with the same title and your title is an ordinary word or a common phrase like "Hall of Fame," you should be fine. But you might want to consider asking a lawyer who specializes in IP, since no one on 4chan has even been inside a law school.

Answered by a staff from UE4s website:
"Hopefully my answer will turn your taco frown into a smile.

Unlike the UDK license (which prohibits objectionable and offensive content), the UE4 EULA is more permissive. You've identified the right part of the EULA - the relevant question is whether the use is lawful. As for which laws apply, it's the laws of the country or jurisdiction of use (that includes development and distribution).

So, the EULA does not prohibit pornographic content per se, so long as it is lawful. I can't give you legal advice on that end, but I think it's too strong of a statement to say that porn isn't illegal anywhere in the world, and even in the US there are some restrictions."

+ Migrated to Unity 2017.1 and C# 6, noticed an overall performance gain, nothing broke, thank God.
+ Using Substance Painter for textures from now on. Much faster workflow, better quality textures.
+ Retextured some assets.
+ Minor UI optimizations for performance.

I'm not angry. I don't think loli should be illegal at all unless it depicts a real child, because, like drawings of gore, it's completely victimless.
But the fact is that it is illegal in many countries and occupies a legal grey area in the US.

>>182997512
Of course it does. Why do you think the US is one of the only countries where the content of pornography is almost entirely unregulated? It is, legally, considered a kind of art, and therefore protected by the right to free expression.
>>
>>182997445
It's probably fine. Legal gray area but less so than lolis, depending on your jurisdiction. But it's also not necessarily whether it's strictly legal, I assume that Epic can also arbitrarily revoke a license.

>one of the only
Plenty countries have lax regulations regarding the content of porn. Mostly first world countries of western culture.
However, to come back to the point at hand, the first amendment does not protect pornography. Material failing the Miller test (satisfying all three conditions) may be considered unlawful. The first amendment does not apply.

The Miller test is for obscenity and applies to everything.
Pornography, like all forms of expression, is protected by the first amendment unless it violates the Miller test.

However, almost everything passes the Miller test because "artistic value" is interpreted very generously. That's why movies like Human Centipede are legal despite existing only to shock and disgust.
>>
>>182999230
the third one is the catch-all because the US court system along with most of the western world have a ton of compounded precedent on the liberalness of "artistic value".
rulings in the US court system have even found that the code of your game is considered an art with artistic value.

That's how rules work: whatever is not forbidden is allowed.

Regarding obscenity in particular, obscenity laws used to be much easier to enforce, but the Supreme Court eventually ruled that you can only outlaw speech if it isn't already protected, and it turns out the first amendment protects almost all forms of speech, including the pointlessly offensive. This means pornography is covered by the first amendment.

On the other hand, there's a state in Australia where it's illegal to shoot porn with models who have small tits, and in Britain, "verbal abuse" in porn is illegal.

What even is the "core gameplay" in something like Dorf Fort/Rimworld?

Is it the starvation/growing food mechanic? The building? What constitutes the "minimum viable product" around which the rest is built?

Or is it just large in scope even at its core?

>>183004271
The appeal of these games is many intersecting systems. There IS some core in there, probably about resource management or suivival, but if you made a boiled down version with just that core, you would not get the audience that plays these games. Contrast that to an FPS, you can make a pure FPS and still get the core fps crowd.

The gameplay is to master the systems that make up the world and manage to survive against the game's attempts to kill your colony. Sufficiently good players then define their goals on top of that.
The more extensive your content, the more appealing the game becomes to that demographic. Too many wannabe clones fail, because they only scratch the surface of what the established titles can offer. You'd have to introduce new systems to master on top of a good chunk of already existing ones to be remotely considered as interesting.

How would you go about making a system that handles conversations. It's funny I always thought this sort of thing would be easy but now I am not sure how to do it.

These conversations would be between two or more characters and have responses that could affect the flow of the conversation. Is it just a series of strings or something? I feel retarded.
>>
>>183007535
it's a graph data structure (or a tree, which is a subset of a graph). conversation node has the string + links to other nodes in the graph.
>>
>>183007535

I use a normal pen tablet and I'm curious if you're serious or not, I've been shopping for a screen tablet for a while now and couldn't really justify it since my tablet is fine. If it's faster I'd like to know how.
>>
>>183007654
It would be nice if I could have outside checks like "player has done X so character responds in Y way" where X could be something earlier in the game

>>183007649
I'll have to look into that, thank you.

>>
>>183007669
I've used Intuos till now too. And now I can definitely say - if you have funds for it - get it, you wouldn't regret if you draw regularly.
Drawing on a tablet in a traditional way does speeds up process a lot. Well, mostly it concern linework.

>>
>>183007751
to do checks you just gotta generalize how you handle checks so you can easily store and use the vars/values data.
likewise you'll need to come up with a command system for your dialogue handler so you can do different things with those checks or just in general.
...theres plenty of ways to format your data, if you want it mostly stuffed in strings you can get creative with Split()
as far as branching, unless you get way too fucking creative with Split() and show it all in a SINGLE string then you'll need a proper referencable dataset...depends on what you're using but something like a hashtable.

Everything lines up perfectly, and when the tiles are unlit they are seamless. However, with the default Unity setup, there are light seams between the tiles when they're illuminated, via anything but general ambient light.

I've tried every combination of tinkering with light probes, cast/receive shadows, etc. and the only thing that fixes the seams while allowing me to use lights is to use Unity's built-in Toon shader, but this seems like more of a bandaid than a fix and I'm curious if there's a better way.

Any ideas?

it's definitely the normals. what are you making the models in? you'll have to go in and align the normals by hand. Maybe using a plugin.

yeah those normals are pointing in different directions from one side to the other. they should point in exactly the same direction

probably using this https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/modeling/modifiers/modify/normal_edit.html
together with a vertex group, just make all the edge normals parallel.

i don't even hate you, just factually you're not collab material at this point. sticking to one skill and really learning it IS a good plan. you just also have to know a little programming if you choose to learn art, cause atm no one will collab.

>computer performs calculations so fast the item it's supposed to be using isn't loaded yet so it can't perform the calculation

Fuck. If I put a short delay for the item to load it works but is this bad thing to do?

For what I'm trying to do is I'm making a door system to go between levels. When begin play is called on my character it teleports my character to a place in a part of the map that isn't loaded yet (using world composition) so first I teleport him to the general area (the unloaded map to load it), then again teleport him to the now loaded item. I can't just teleport straight to the co ords itself by just entering the vector because I need the rotation of the item which I can't get unless it's loaded.

Is there a better way to do this? Or just add the .5 delay which makes it work fine?

Using UE4 .

again, you don't need to be good at either of those things to make a simple game to hold your art. it just has to work.
once you've done that you have something to show you can at least finish a project. bonus points if your art is actually good.

I'm making a bowling game but with obstacles in the alley like a miniature golf course, and you have to knock down all ten pins on each one before moving on to the next, but each is in a room with a creepy environment, and you hear shuffling sounds behind you, so you'd better hurry because the next door only unlocks when you've succeeded in knocking the pins down.

If you don't make it, a monster grabs you and drags you away screaming. If you do make it to the end, there's a brick wall. But then your character turns around, bowling ball in hand, and cracks the monster in the skull with it, then bathes in its blood.

The name of the game is BOWL FOR YOUR LIFE.

The soundtrack is synthpop and there will be trippy colors.

Doesn't look like a walk, or like movement you'd make when in a combat situation.

If you are keeping your shield arm with your lead leg, you'd do more of a step (with lead leg) then drag your other leg to your resting combat pose.

You'd switch your lead leg (in the case of your sprite) to allow your sword arm more reach when swinging or thrusting.

Hello agdg, nodev here, I had a surge of inspiration today and wanted to get started making my silly adventure game. I've been learning programming slowly over the past 2 months, but I'm still learning HTML&CSS so I'm assuming it won't help me at all.

best way to learn is to just start making something. google things as you run into issues or if you don't know how to do something.

unity2d is weird because it's kinda tacked on to the 3d engine, and it definitely shows, but it's fine if you really want to use unity or want to make use of sprite layering.
GM:S is ok. no complaints from the limited amount of time i used it. it does what it advertises.
i've heard godot is better than both, but can't speak for it since i've never used it.
probably no one here will seriously recommend you use RPGMaker, but if that's what you're comfortable with, do what you wish.

As a 1MA, can't you just hire people to do the art, music, and all the stuff you have no skills to do?

Is there any catch?
>>
>>183035465
1) Its expensive
2) You don't know what you need, so you may pay for things you don't need, and you may try to insert things that you don't need just because you payed for them
3) People are flaky and won't stick around, even if you pay them, you may change artists 5+ times and it will make your game look inconsistent and terrible
>>
>>183034893
I've never sen an RPGM game that didn't look terrible like that (I know the one you are talking about)

I'd love to learn something else, but I don't know how to learn without building something, and I don't know how to build something without assets to experiment with, and I can't produce them and I cannot afford them, so I don't know what to do

most people use placeholder art they've thrown together in a short amount of time. a 32x32 rectangle is mostly the same thing as using a 32x32 sprite as far as the engine is concerned.
it just takes some imagination on your end, and you can code a good chunk of your game without having to make the final art anyway, depending on the mechanics of your game.

there are also plenty of free sprite packs out on the internet for placeholder purposes if you absolutely need something specific. you may have to do some searching, though.

I don't really need anything specific, I just have a difficult time mapping without seeing what I'm making I guess. I wonder if its possible to extract the tilesets from RPGM to use as placeholders...I'll have to look into that, or just do what you said and try to frankenstein something together

I'm honestly pretty concerned about sizing, like you mentioned. I have truly no idea how it works or how I should size things, especially when I can't really see what I'm doing. I know that I'll have to comb each map thoroughly to polish them in the end, but I'd like to be in a position where I don't have to complete restart each area due to how poorly planned out my initial attempt was

Does anyone have any advice on this?

>>183036968
I found it easier to just use placeholders 100% of the time because of this, then just pay for what I need and ONLY what I need once its all come together, then you can strategically divide up tasks (one person only draws monsters, one person only draws humans, one person only draws environments, etc) so that when two bail, you still have one that finishes

Yeah I'm going overboard with the decoration. The short encounters/dialogues are working now but I'm not satisfied yet with the cards (I have like 6 iterations of I dont know how many cards) so for now I'm trying to work on the over world stuff while I fix that and do more dialogue.

How would you implement randomized enemy placement on a tilemap where each enemy has their own placement rules? For example A might only want to be placed NOT adjacent to any other enemies, while B might ONLY want to be spawned next to adjacent enemies. There might also be something like C which might only want to be spawned next to another C.

I've thought of maybe first covering the entire map in random enemies and then picking each one at random to apply their rules and remove them if they don't meet them, then if I've removed too many I'll just spawn generic enemies to replace them. I think this might work but it'd probably result in enemies with crazy rules being removed all the time because they always fail them. Also if I ever wanted to make a non-randomized map (e.g. I choose the types of enemies and the amount of enemies) I'd have to think of another way to do it.

The brute force method of just choosing X enemies of Y types and placing them randomly while they don't meet the rules would probably just go on infinitely.
>>
I sat down and thought about what the type of game I want to make really needs, as a bare minimum product to feel good to play, what is the most important things I need to work on and I'm slightly disturbed by the results. I want to add more but I can't deny that when I think of fun in the genre its usually these things in the "core gameplay" that are most important.

>Single Player RPG
>(games I actually enjoy PLAYING, not just games that have a good story or setting that I like)

It all comes down to visual, auditory, and systematic experience for gaining XP. And the visual, auditory, and systematic feedback for character growth. The genre feeds off of providing an outlet for dozens of hours of player effort into growing their character. Even I can admit that RPG's that try and be "humane" by cutting grinding out and "not wasting the players time with false options/needless repetition" are a massive turn off for me because I feel like I'm being robbed of the experience of an RPG which is fundamentally character growth. The growth feels cheapened when its shortened and when the options are streamlined to improve balance and reduce player confusion.

Games like Fable have a very satisfying experience system, building up a multiplier and getting a giant bank of experience orbs/bing noises as you suck them all in feels fucking amazing compared to static XP gain. Having XP spread across skills also feels good because for some reason it FEELS RIGHT to be like "time to go level block/restoration by letting a skeleton wail on me" in the elder scrolls. I also really enjoy the final fantasy level up sound which I think peaked with FFXI
https://youtu.be/_qTUwVvxWBc?t=5

Another thing I really like in regards to leveling and gaining XP. In Phantasy Star Universe the skills changed as you gained certain levels in the skills.
https://youtu.be/ZKyfbSlx6Do?t=19

You would straight up do missions just to level up your spells to 41 so they would look baller as fuck.

Just place em random like everybody does:
- Take enemy A and place n of them at random checking conditions.
- Then take enemy B and place n of them at random checking conditions.
- (repeat for all other types)
- done
>>
>>183050357
TLDR: I need to learn to art and sound effect so that I can create skinner box attention grabbing juice so I can trick players into having fun. While also supporting the initial juice with a systematic backbone that allows a lot of timesink that isn't blatant timesink. Tons of filler quests that only give gold, and house options that are only there to burn gold and shit tier time sinks. However including tons of unlockable restoration spells for leveling restoration a ton is actually a cool time sink that I'd actually grind out especially if there was secondary effects like elegability for master classes, guild rank, and quest/gear per-requisites.
>>
>>183050289
That would mess up your enemy ratios. Choose the enemy you're going to place first, then choose random positions until you find one where you can place it (limit it in case there is no valid position though). You could also keep track of which tiles are valid as you go and choose from a list of tile you know are valid.

For each enemy, loop through all map tiles and make a list of tiles (or coordinates) where that enemy can spawn. Then just pick one at random from the ones you collected.

Nothing new in the .webm, but porting is 90% done.

How many of these "levels" would you expect to have in a game for 5.19 $/£/€, assuming no filler, to not feel disappointed?

I'm estimating 100: 4 different themes of 20 levels with 20 of optional paths.

>4 3 min long 'decent' songs for 100 bucks
Hahahaha are you kidding

$100 per minute of music is generally the smallest amount where you're not fucking over a desperate composer

That's a relief I guess. Keep up with the progress anyway. I'm very interested on this.
>>
>>183054318
At $100/day (weekdays only, 50 weeks a year) you're making $25k, which isn't great, but is livable in many places. I don't want to downplay the work that composers do, but I have a hard time believing that the rate of production for decent video game music is not greater (on average) than one minute produced per day. That is, I think probably a decent composer can finish more than one minute per day on average, even if occasionally one little bit does take a long time.

The issue is probably lack of business more than anything, but then the demand isn't high so you should actually lower your prices so you can do more business.

I'm no fan of capitalism, but as long as we have it, that's how it is.

I bought gamemaker Pro when it was on sale a year or so ago and I finally have inspiration on making something. It's a first person adventure game, should I use another Engine or is GM fine?

Also, what free 3D modelling programs are recommended?

Your job is to make sure road work takes the most amount of time so you can rack in as much money as possible without being noticed.
